Bill Cosby Performs Sit-Down Stand-Up (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/18/10 01:20 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:30 PM ET

Legendary comedian Bill Cosby was the guest last night on "The Tonight Show," and he gave the audience a taste of his stand-up routine (albeit sitting down). Cosby, now at age 72, dismissed the audience's applause saying, "You don't mean that," before launching into his material about growing old. If we learned anything from his routine, it's that growing older means having very complicated phone conversations with people just as old as you.

I grew up watching Fat Albert every Saturday morning. I'll always love this guy.

The guy is a genius standup and he doesn't get the respect he deserves for his achievements. People take him for granted.

Okay I grew up with Cosby too. I was a fan of Fat Albert and The Cosby show. I listened to his records and dreamed of owning my very own Picture Pages pen. Love the Cos. True as that all is, I have to say that I found this routine to be really really not funny. Like kind of painfully unfunny. Glad I got that off my chest. I'm ready for you all to take me down. And...go!

I think Seinfeld studied Cosby's work...they have a similar conversational style and the material is made up of observations. The work is also very much about storytelling and builds up slowly. I miss that in comedy...makes me think of Richard Pryor too who also had a storytelling style...though of course egcier.

Seinfeld has admitted as much in interviews. Also, check out his discussion of Cosby with Chris Rock in the documentary "Comedian"!

The headline tries to make it seem novel, but this is the way Bill Cosby has been doing his act for more than 20 years now. A sit down stand up routine....and still funny after all these years.
