Michelle Obama's State Dinner Gown By Peter Soronen: See The Dress Up Close! (PHOTO, POLL)

First Posted: 05/19/2010 6:26 pm   Updated: 05/25/2011 4:30 pm

By Samantha Critchell, Associated Press:

Michelle Obama is wearing a shimmery-blue gown to the state dinner for Mexican President Felipe Calderon and his wife, Margarita Zavala. It has a one-shoulder silhouette, similar to the one Mrs. Obama wore to her husband's inaugural balls.

The dress for Wednesday's event was by Peter Soronen (SORE-nun). It was the fifth gown by the designer the first lady has worn.

This one has a fully-boned corset, a silver belt and layers of chiffon -- with a bit of lame that Soronen said gives it that little bit of sparkle.

The New York-based Soronen knew that it was possible she'd wear the gown tonight, but didn't know for sure until photos started to appear.

Her hair looks great and so does her makeup. I love the dress but the mushroom effect she has on her strapless arm looks very uncomfortable. Her skin has the polished glow. Overall, she looks simply beautiful.

Personally, I don't like how the piece of flesh is hanging out by her underarm, but she looks beautiful.

Three days after the state dinner and I still can't get enough of Michelle in her blue dress, and as much as I hate the way she wears belts must admit THIS silver belt makes the outfit.

She would look so good if she would wear her hair natural....

She should have worn this to the inagural ball instead of that big white frop!

They look fab. (For her right arm, the dress should have been altered lower with a transparent shoulder strap added to prevent slippage, IMHO. :o)

You may want to tone down the all caps--it makes it seems as if you're shouting. (If you aren't able to see the font, use point 14 in Word, then "cut and past" to post. :o)

She looks great. I didn't like how it made the right side of her chest look though..

It's called "overhang." Bra and/or dress a bit tight.

. . . not at all.

I suspect it might look prettier in person. The eye immediately goes to the unfortunate gouge at the bust/arm area that a proper fitting would have fixed. But the shade of blue is very flattering and her hair is glamorous. Call me a throwback, but I like the look of hose at formal occasions.

Wow you are TOUGH! The gouge at the bust/arm area? What if the designer WANTED taht? IT looks soft and feminine.

And it is now considered a social faux pas to wear hose with sandals. We have come a long way in the foundation garment industry, making the need for hose with a gown really unnecessary.

I thought the color was perfect, her hair looked sweet and feminine. I wouldn't be able to find a flaw with this look---except I'd be happier if she smiled. But seriously, as far as style goes? IT was spot on.

Not tough--I just love fashion and, like everyone else, have an opinion. As for the "social faux pas" of wearing hose--I disagree. They flatter the leg and can be worn with a variety of shoes. It's a personal preference.
