KFC Double Down For The Win? Sandwich's Run Extended With 10 MILLION Served

First Posted: 05/20/10 01:45 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:30 PM ET

From The Associated Press:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Meat lovers, relax. But chickens, beware. KFC says Americans are gobbling down so many Double Down sandwiches that the fast-food chain will offer the bunless, meaty sandwich longer than it had planned.

Originally the sandwich – bacon and cheese surrounded by chicken filets – was to have been available through Sunday. But KFC said Wednesday that the sandwich will be available now for as long as customer demand remains high.

The Double Down came onto the market on April 12 and was supposed to have lasted about six weeks. But it tapped into Americans' fascination with quirky food and became a viral-marketing sensation. People posted videos of themselves eating the sandwich on sites like YouTube, and celebrities like Stephen Colbert gobbled it up.

KFC said it has been one of its most successful sandwich launches ever. Later this month, KFC expects to sell its 10 millionth Double Down. They cost about $5.

Some have questioned the sandwiches' nutritional value. The original version has 540 calories and 32 grams of fat, and 1,380 milligrams of salt. A grilled version cuts calories to 460 and fat to 23 grams, but sodium rises to 1,430 milligrams. By comparison, the Big Mac from McDonald's has 540 calories, 29 grams of fat and 1,040 milligrams of sodium. The American Heart Association says people should aim to eat less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium a day. KFC's corporate parent is Yum Brands Inc.

Everyone should eat healthfully, having said that, I love KFC. Not this sandwich perhaps, but regular old fashioned KFC, freshly made...aw c'mon you know it's good ! {all disclaimers noted, for vegans, people with pet chickens, etc.}
If ever on Death Row, KFC or lobster would be my order for my final meal...

Ok ok - I confess - I did it.

I bought one. But no - I didn't eat it - it was my 16yo son that asked me to buy it for him after looked over my laptop and saw me discussing it here on HuffPo.

He said, and I quote "It was really disgusting. Don't buy it again."

This is the kid with the iron belly that eats pretty much anything.

When you eat this sandwich, you're not only getting enough salt to compete with the dead sea, you're getting all the hormones and drugs that KFC feeds these birds, so they can live long enough to get to your plate.

No wonder Americans are dying of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease in droves.

I loves me some meat and chicken but this tasted downright nasty to me (I tried the grilled one). You can make your own at home and season it however you like.

You must have a craving for the drugs and hormones that they feed these birds and pigs in order to create this assault to the human body. Yum. Yum.

More likely they enjoy the occasional taste of fat and salt - it is what makes stuff taste good.

Would it be as disgusting if it was on a plate with the two pieces of chicken side by side, with the cheese and sauce on to and a salad next to it? Folks really need to get a grip.

KFC could care less about the slow killing of America by fast food. If current trends continue, we will bankrupt the nation with this cheap food that they are producing.

I ate two. It was actually really good. Grilled one is great, fried one, both tasty, and if you're low carb'ing it, its a godsend when you're on the go and have few fast choices in a pinch.

the horrid treatmentr of chickens by kfc is disgusting, they beat them they toss them against the walls, they stomp on them. they allow employees to get away with this. i couldnt eat kfc if they promised to cover me in diamonds.

There's chicken in KFC products? ;)

Chickens are food - when all people are safe from abuse I might worry about how chickens get to the table.
