Sarah Palin: Rand Paul's 'Libertarian Streak' Will Ward Off 'Leftist Liberal Overreach'

First Posted: 05/20/10 12:14 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:30 PM ET

Palin Libertarian

Former Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin spoke Wednesday night about the positives of the establishment-shaking victory of Rand Paul, the Tea Party and Palin-supported GOP candidate for Kentucky Senate.

Appearing on the Fox Business Channel, Palin acknowledged Paul's libertarian leanings and said they were a net positive.

"Seeing kind of that libertarian streak of his -- that is what we need to balance out the leftist liberal overreach of government that's in power right now," Palin said. "Rand's gonna be great, plus on social issues, right there, he's got some great positions."

Later Wednesday evening, Rand Paul spoke with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow to discuss the same intersection of libertarian and social values that Palin had earlier praised.

When the conversation came to the Civil Rights Act and its mandate prohibiting racial discrimination in the workplace, Rand Paul said that this was a component of the bill that he would have argued against.

Should we limit speech from people we find abhorrent. Should we limit racists from speaking. I don't want to be associated with those people, but I also don't want to limit their speech in any way in the sense that we tolerate boorish and uncivilized behavior because that's one of the things that freedom requires is that we allow people to be boorish and uncivilized, but that doesn't mean we approve of it.

[...]

Well what it gets into then is if you decide that restaurants are publicly owned and not privately owned, then do you say that you should have the right to bring your gun into a restaurant even though the owner of the restaurant says 'well no, we don't want to have guns in here' the bar says 'we don't want to have guns in here because people might drink and start fighting and shoot each-other.' Does the owner of the restaurant own his restaurant? Or does the government own his restaurant?

The only thing Atlas Stumbled Rand and Mini-Guv Bendy Straws will ward off, are people smart enough not to fall for their right-wing fantasy land drivel, and voters smart enough not to vote for either of them...

Think for a moment what Rand Paul in actually advocating, then take it the the extreme. The only thing that prevents Pfizer from bottling rat poison and selling it as a cure for cancer is regulation. Palin doesn't have a clue.

I am noticing that many Tea Partiers (including Palin) are using the Constitution the way Evangelicals use the Bible to suggest it must be an infallible narrative.

If you listen closely, you will learn that the Founding Fathers hated teachers, gun control and social justice ... and the Apostles hated gays and evolution.

You come away with the impression that if old Ben Franklin was alive today he would be on Fox News co-hosting with Sean Hannity.

Can you imagine Thomas Jefferson pimping for Gold Line during the commercial breaks?

Vaughn Ward is not a Tea Partier. He's a wind-up Ken Doll carpetbagger. Palin's backing him because he was the McCain campaign manager in Idaho for 5 months. He's the guy who's endorsed by national GOP figures and has the biggest campaign war chest. Walt Minick (Democrat incumbent) won the endorsement of the Tea Party Express, and the Boise Tea Party endorsed Raul Labrador. And Palin's trying to plug Ward as the Tea Party choice? She's not fooling anyone, the people of the 1st District are not falling for it. She drew a crowd of 1,500 in a 5,000 seat venue when the top ticket price was $10 and over half the tickets were free and then I heard they (a) had to literally go out on the street and beg people to attend, (b) had to bus in a bunch from all over the state and even a few from out of state and (c) substantial number of the audience were school-aged kids, too young to vote. Yes, they were counting toddlers as "audience members" in the total attendance count.

Interesting piece in the online edition of the Boise Weekly. City Desk reporter Nat Hoffman attended her fundraiser and noted it was full of the same cliches she uses on every occasion she speaks. The new one was a shout out to "Tea Party Americans" which got big applause from the audience.

Only one little problem. She's backing the GOP-annointed candidate in that race, Vaughn Ward, not Raul Labrador, the candidate backed by local Tea Party groups. The incumbent, Democrat Walt Minick, is well liked in the District, and Palin acknowledged that, saying, "Bless his heart; he just hangs out with the wrong people" (Democrats).

The Boise TP chapter notes that Ward moved to Idaho to run for Congress, has never served in elected office (much less in Idaho) and has spent the past three years raising money for himself and other GOP establishment candidates, while his TP-backed opponent has been working in the State Senate.

Another Idaho paper, the Wenatchee World, notes: "Ward, who headed the McCain-Palin presidential campaign in Nevada for five months in 2008, is facing state Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Eagle, in Idaho’s primary election on Tuesday for a chance to challenge freshman Democratic Congressman Walt Minnick.

Although he’s been viewed as the front-runner, with endorsements from a number of top GOP elected officials, a big lead in fundraising and a nine-month jump on Labrador in campaigning, Ward’s campaign has suffered in recent weeks from a string of embarrassing revelations. Those have ranged from his violating military regulations with a campaign ad to being late paying his property taxes and not voting in the 2008 general election, despite being on the staff of the McCain-Palin campaign; Ward said he was too busy with the campaign to return to Idaho to vote."

Two problems with this statement. 1. Paul doesn't just have a "libertarian streak", he's a bona fide libertarian (as far as I can tell, and certainly in the speeches he has given for his father). 2. It's pretty obvious that Paul himself wants to step back from the statements (which I have noted on the Politico boards, and even right wingers have agreed with me, are damaging and defining). After falling over himself to modify/explain, he's now not talking to the press at all. The last thing he needs or wants is Palin, whose every utterance seems to be widely followed, to remind everybody what he said.

But of course, Palin is too stupid and too much of an attention whore to get it.

Palin is the beneficiary of Paul's stupidities. Now, Palin appears as a mainstream candidate when compared to the radically unhinged Paul. In 2012, it will be Palin and Gingrich (as VP) verus Obama and Clinton. Note that Palin has been taking stands, supporting people, while her rivals are silent. She may be wrong, she may be deluded, but she is paying her dues for the GOP nomination.

This woman is an idiot! She rambles on with meaningless words to fill space. She's saying a whole lot of NOTHING as usual and is an empty shell of a human being. Sarah is a tool that is being used to capacity by the GOP because of her looks only. If she were an ugly woman, she would NOT be doing what she does. She is being played by men to encourage other men and women to be the LEAST they can be and she's doing a good job of it by persuading the least of human kind to follow her lead.

I feel for all the LEMMINGS who trail behind her to the cliffs. They know not what they are doing!

She might not need glasses if she were to have squint surgery, but she obviously hasn't done that, so she needs the glasses.

Sarah Palin has a pretty noticeable squint (otherwise known as "lazy eye").

To Rand Paul and his career adviser, Governor Sarah Palin,

Liberty as defined at: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/liberty

“1 : the quality or state of being free:
a : the power to do as one pleases
b : freedom from physical restraint
c : freedom from arbitrary or despotic control
d : the positive enjoyment of various social, political, or economic rights and privileges
e : the power of choice”

Okay, that covers your rights, now what about your responsibilities? You remember that term, don’t you, rights & responsibilities?

She doesn't have anything to say....she only brings the little prop out into the light of day when she's going for the sympathy tear.....otherwise, I'd truly like to know what HER views on the Americans with Disabilities Act are.
