Thomas Wortham, Chicago Police Officer And Iraq War Veteran, Killed In Robbery Attempt

CHICAGO — A 30-year-old Chicago police officer who recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq was shot and killed when several people approached him outside his family's home and tried to steal his new motorcycle, authorities said Thursday.

Thomas Wortham IV's father – a retired Chicago police officer – came to his son's aid and shot two of the attackers, killing one of them late Wednesday, police said. Retired police officers are allowed to keep guns.

"This is a tragedy. This young man survived two tours in Iraq, and came home and got murdered on the streets in front of his house that he grew up in. In front of his father, it's just unbelievable," said Chicago Alderman Freddrenna Lyle.

She said she knows the family, who has lived for about three decades in the Chatham neighborhood on the city's South Side.

Wortham was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard, said spokeswoman Capt. Joy Staab. He enlisted in April 1999 and was last promoted to 1st lieutenant in August 2008, she said.

Wortham and his family had been vocal in efforts to curb street violence – a particularly hot-button issue in Chicago where two Illinois lawmakers recently asked the governor to send in the National Guard to patrol the streets.

"It's starting to feel like it's expected in this community," the younger Wortham told the Chicago Tribune in an interview earlier this month. "When people think of the South Side of Chicago, they think violence. In Chatham, that's not what we see. It's happened, and we're going to fix it, so it doesn't happen again."

Wortham had been on an advisory council for a park in his neighborhood, and worked on making it more safe for children, Lyle said.

Wortham joined the Police Department in June 2007, according to Chicago police Superintendent Jody Weis.

"Officer Wortham was a true guardian to those he served and an inspiration to his friends and colleagues," Weis said in a statement Thursday. "The entire city of Chicago has suffered a tragic loss."

Bob Alberts, the assistant principal at Brother Rice High School, from which the slain officer graduated in 1998, said Wortham ran track for four years and played football.

"He had a great personality. He was bubbly, he was funny," Alberts said. "We're pretty depressed around here."

On Thursday, Lyle visited with the family, who has declined to comment.

"They are distraught. It's got to be the most horrible experience that a father could ever have," she said. "We appreciate everyone's concerns, but it's very difficult for the family right now."

Earlier this month, Wortham attended a memorial in Washington, D.C., for police officers killed in the line of duty. Members of Pipes and Drums of the Chicago Police Department also attended, said the group's president, Joe Bowes.

"Our prayers go out to the family of Officer Wortham," the group's Facebook page read Thursday.

Charges were pending against the injured suspect, who was hospitalized, police said.

Authorities said two other suspects fled after the shootings. Weis said one turned himself in Thursday. Later, police spokeswoman Officer Anne Dwyer confirmed that a fourth person had been arrested.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, has been notified, said spokesman Curtis Travers.

"The entire city of Chicago extends condolences and prayers to the family," Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said at a news conference. "We think of him serving not only our city, but our country."

What a waste. Good kid, honorable service, to come home to the zoo of Chicago's urban area and be gunned down by a bunch of ignorant, animals. They contribute nothing to society. And yet the gun blamers will be out in force. The urban culture is out of control in every city in this country. No respect, no accountability, and protection beyond imagination from these big city Democratic politicians.

To add to the previous post.....
The money for guns give away recently sure wasn't very effective....maybe gave some the money to buy a better gun.

That money might have been better used to put some more
security on the streets.

Also...sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the young veteran who was killed.
May he rest in eternity and may God comfort his family at this sad time.
He spent 2 tours in a war area and had to come home to a war where he lived to have his life ended on the streets
of Chicago.

About the only gun control that would help at this point is to let
citizens carry guns to protect themselves from the hoodlums.

I wonder where Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton....they are all over the place if it was a white on black crime....
Why aren't they out there trying to do something about all the black on black crime....
When the punks do get caught, they usually get a plea agreement...light sentence....or probation...oh, I forgot...
a lot of times they get a slap on the wrist and are free to continue their crime sprees until one fine day one will get caught and be punished because he just happens to have an extensive criminal record.

Maybe if there were some ground rules set up....some of this would stop...Make mandatory sentences for crimes so those committing them will know they aren't getting by with stealing
and murdering and drug dealing and any other gang activities.
If the justice department keeps being so lax against crime,
the time might come when the citizens will do it.

Al Sharpton was on Don Lemon's show today complaining about how a chicago cop was killed. Right then and there I knew the cop was black no way he would care otherwise.

wow this is the second or third
Iraq vet that has come back home
and has been killed in Chicago...

Gun control in large urban areas
is a must, because if they are crazy
enough to want to rob a Chicago cop
then the rest of the public is at risk!

I hope the city of Chicago ignores the
Supreme Courts ruling on the Chicago
gun ban and continues making hand guns
illegal....situations like this are ridiculous!

We lose a veteran and a policemen
because there are too many guns on the
street....The must stop!!!

Guns are already banned in Chicago. How's that working? These punks will get guns no matter what. Hopefully a right to carry will soon be a reality in Illinois.

I don't know if they were gang affiliates, but I do know that it is time to start treating the gang bangers like domestic terrorists because that is what they are. They terrorize communities.

As far as how it really went down, we really don't know. Certainly can't go by a news report which may turn out to have everything ass backwards.

Wow my heart goes out to the family of the murdered officer.

The people that committed the crime acted like a bunch of wild animals gathering together to make a kill. Something straight out of 'Wild Kingdom'..it's insane that people have to live amongst so much stress, depression and fear of being harmed or killed.

R.I.P. Thomas Wortham IV.

Have to say.

I've been going back and forth on the gun ban.

But when I see the idiot comments from the gun nuts, I always come down on the side of gun control.

I met this gentleman almost 12 years ago when we arrived at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He did not drink, do drugs, curse, or disrepect women. He was a great friend to any person lucky enough to cross his path and served his country and city proudly. The world is a lesser place wihtout him.

For those of you arguing over HOW IT HAPPENED:

Does it really matter? Did he deserve to die or is this less of a tragedy even if his father did try to protect him or his property? You are allowing your city to become a haven once again for criminals by arguing over how things happen rather than UNITING TOGETHER TO STOP THEM FROM HAPPENING!

ejuww2002 so true. I personally can not imagine living in a community where criminals are running rampant just hurting and killing other folks. I guess one might to become a martyr to make a change in one's community. That's a tough call.

Fanned and faved.

You used the magic word - property. The use of deadly force to protect property (in this case a motorcycle) is never warranted. There are peaceful ways to "take back the neighborhood". Stooping to the level of the criminal, taking the law in your own hands, is not the way to effect change. You and you community group, work with local law enforcement and if they don't pay enough attention to your problems - you pressure them into doing so. There are other things that can be done as well, and it is better to live to carry on your good work than to die on the street.

Here's the section from the Tribune's earlier article that makes it clear the father of the deceased hero pulled his gun out and shot first...

" Wortham's father watched from the door as Wortham left and got on his bike about 11:25 p.m., the alderman said.

The father saw at least two men get out of the Nissan and try to steal the motorcycle, according to Lyle and police.

The father grabbed his gun and came to his son's aid, sources said. In the exchange of gunfire, Wortham was shot several times and two of the suspects were wounded, authorities said. Retired police officers are allowed to keep guns, officials said."

Put down the Romper Room view finder there buddy.

You have no case here.

Good on the dad for listening to his spidey senses, but he will have to live with this little incident playing out in his head for the rest of his days.

No good comes from this.

Everyone looses.

You know what.. it's not as clear in this story as the Tribune's earlier version, but the robbers were trying to steal the young man's motorcycle.and the father choose to draw his gun on them. He pulled his gun out and fired, and they pulled theirs out and killed his son. If they would have let the thieves have the motorcycle- just like you have always been told, let them have what they want, then follow up with the police, the real police, not the retired police... That nice young man might still be alive to carry on his good works. I can't believe the father with his career in law enforcement didn't realize what would be the best thing to do to protect his son, not, his son's motorcycle. Live by the gun - die by the gun...

What a horrible tragedy!! All opinions aside, the main point here is a fine young man senselessy lost his life after giving so much of himself to his community and his country. I pray for his family and those close to him. I also pray the parties responsible are all found & brought to justice.

Another success story in "gun free" Chicago.
05:41 AM on 05/21/2010
This has nothing to do with the gun law.

Every party in the altercation had guns, just like you'd prefer.

God, are you NRA types dumb.

why Andy? So you can continue with your gang-banging drug-dealing ways? No cops? Hmmm. Every time I needed a cop they were there - or course I am not a criminal, so the respect was mutual.

Cops are the criminals. http://www.youtube.com/user/CopsOutofControl

You just bow down to them like a good little slave. It's very sad.

I don't know about gang-banding. I prefer my privacy. Don't do drugs but they should be legalized.

What is WRONG with Mayor Daley?!?!?! Mr. Wortham''s father may have also been killed without his own gun to defend himself.

Such a tragic, disturbing occurrence.

A good man randomly struck down and a family senselessly destroyed by a pack of worthless human beings.

Strength, hope and prayers to the Worthams moving forward.
