Anti-Government Man Jerry Kane Jr., Teenage Son Reportedly Killed Police In Deadly Shootout

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — An Ohio man's resentment of authority and run-ins with the law was enough for a local sheriff to warn that he could be dangerous if confronted by law enforcement. Years later, the sheriff appears right: The man and his teenage son are suspected of fatally shooting two Arkansas police officers during a traffic stop before they died in a shootout.

Jerry Kane Jr., 45, of Forest, Ohio, and his son Joseph Kane, believed to be 16, were killed during an exchange of gunfire with officers in a Walmart parking lot, Arkansas State Police said Friday.

The shootings came about 90 minutes after West Memphis police Sgt. Brandon Paudert, 39, and Officer Bill Evans, 38, were attacked with AK-47 assault rifles after they stopped a minivan on Interstate 40 in West Memphis on Thursday, authorities said.

Jerry Kane, who had a long history with police, used the Internet to question federal and local governments' authority over him and held debt-elimination seminars around the country. He recently complained about being busted at a "Nazi checkpoint" near Carrizozo, N.M., where court records show he spent three days in jail before posting a $1,500 bond on charges of driving without a license and concealing his identity.

Sheriff Gene Kelly in Clark County, Ohio, said he issued a warning to law enforcement about Kane in July 2004, after Kane said a judge tried to "enslave" him when he was sentenced to six days of community service for driving with an expired license plate and no seat belt. Kane claimed he was a "free man" and asked for $100,000 per day in gold or silver, Kelly said.

"After listening to this man for almost 30 minutes, I feel that he is expecting and prepared for confrontations with any law enforcement officer that may come in contact with him," Kelly wrote in his warning to officers.

Kelly told The Associated Press on Friday that he had been "very concerned about a potential confrontation and about his resentment of authority."

On an Internet radio show, hosted on a website that lets amateurs create their own shows and live discussions, Kane expressed outrage about his New Mexico arrest.

"I ran into a Nazi checkpoint in the middle of New Mexico where they were demanding papers or jail," he said. "That was the option. Either produce your papers or go to jail. So I entered into commerce with them under threat, duress and coercion, and spent 47 hours in there."

Kane said he planned to file a counterclaim alleging kidnapping and extortion against those involved in his arrest and detention. Kane also said he had an officer sign a document that said the officer must pay for using Kane's name.

"I am now putting together an invoice for him for approximately $80,000 in gold for the eight times he used my name," Kane said on the radio show. "I already have done a background check on him. I found out where he lives, his address, his wife's name."

Mark Potok, who directs hate-group research at the Southern Poverty Law Center, said Kane had not been in the group's database before Thursday. But he said that was not surprising, given the "explosive growth" in the anti-government movement in recent years. With 363 new groups in 2009, there are now 512, Potok said.

Members of so-called patriot groups don't recognize the authority of the U.S. government and consider themselves sovereign citizens.

JJ MacNab, a Maryland-based insurance analyst who has testified before Congress on tax and financial scams, said she had been tracking Kane for about two years and that his business centered on debt-avoidance scams.

Potok said such scams are common in the sovereign citizen movement.

"He basically promised them they would never have to repay their mortgage or credit card debt," MacNab said.

Kane's website showed he held one of his seminars in Las Vegas 15-16 and that he was due to appear in Safety Harbor, Fla., May 28-29. His website Friday asked that donations be sent to an address in Clearwater, Fla., to help his family.

At that Florida address, a woman, speaking through the front door, told an AP reporter to leave the property when he knocked and identified himself. Two bicycles were in front of the unkempt, single-story home and exercise equipment was on the porch. A sign on the front door read: "No visitors. This means you. Thank you for understanding."

A woman who answered the door at the home of Kane's mother, Patricia Holt of Marysville, Ohio, also told an AP reporter to leave and said she had no comment. She did not identify herself.

I my opinion this is a very selfish, childish movement with a belief that the world owes them everything they desire and they answer to no one.

How do you know that Jerry Kane was responsible for anything? Do you people believe everything the media tells you hook, line and sinker? Is it a foreign idea to you that the media is all for profit private corporations? If you've never been a victim of the media's lies, spin and hype, consider yourself very fortunate. The Official Investigation isn't even over yet. There are so many inconsistencies with this story, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Did everyone here jump to the same conclusions over Waco and Ruby Ridge? It would appear so. That is very sad, indeed.

2 things are needed 1. Re-instilling a strict Death Penalty, quicklhy and justly applied and reinstill our deportation process, quickly and justly. Lets weed out the parasities. If you do the crime. do the time/ "Parole" for example means that you are on your "Word" not free.

Well all I have to say is, no this was not right and crime is crime. But what is the difference between this happening and everyone having so much so called sympathy for these cops, when a little innocent 7 year old girl just lost her life and it is being called and accident and also being covered up by the pigs. I feel that the way that they are treating this story the same needs to be done in respect to that one. something needs to be done as far as their so called protocol when it comes to apprehending suspects when they know that children are invovled irregards to race! Step up your techniques and stop taking innocent lives, these men had lived most of their lives not condoning anything, but that little girl was seven and had her whole life ahead of her. I f anyone should get any sympathy it should be her and her family left with the horrific memories of a sensless and completely preventable tragedy. R.I.P. Aiyana stanley Jones.

It's just that when they choose to express themselves with bullets rather than words that I have the problem.

To be passionate about ones message is admirable, to allow the emotion to boil over into violence is contemptible.

But not all can be accomplished with words unfortunately, and one must have a point that one will not allows others to cross without there being consequences.

When the Cops use bullets instead of words it is not only acceptable, but truly justified - just like when the retarded boy in Denver was gunned down on the front porch of his home because he was angry and had a BUTTER KNIFE in his hand - the cops thought that their lives were in danger - that was the media "justification" story. Of course, it had NOTHING to do with the cops having extreme mental problems (control and bully issues) and they enjoyed an extended vacation with full pay (administrative leave) until the PUBIC watched a few more Denver Broncos games and a few more episodes of Desperate Housewives and totally forgot about the murder. See what good WORDS will do you when you sit as a court observer and hear a DA state in open court that the Constitution is just "OLD LAW", an "OLD DOCUMENT" AND "IRRELEVANT". She should have been executed by firing squad for HIGH TREASON ! But, no, she is still getting her huge paycheck and still prosecuting slaves. It's all coming to a head real soon. More bullets in the hands of the common people is necessary SOON

First, let me say I apologise to all, from my callus posts about the police, to my after party rambling.

I have found out some information, won't say how but here's what I've found out. Witnesses claim the Kanes took their Ohio plates off the van in a apartment complex near Wal - Mart, as to why they didn't leave the area, that will remain unknown. Now the first stop on I -40 where this began, Jerry Kane's feelings created the environment that caused the shooting. I don't feel I should say anymore than that,I think you can connect the dots between the 47 in jail in NM and what happened on I 40 in West Memphis Arkansas.

Again to all whom I offended I apologise.

No worries there. If Republicans were to take the WH and Congress in 2012, that number will plummet. It doesn't matter to them what ensues in an administration, when it's a Republican administration.

Kane and son were neither assassinated nor patriots... just raving lunatics with guns... I'm sorry and disappointed to hear about he loss of life of the two law enforcement officers... sadder that a young life was snuffed out, but his mind was already filled with a bunch of daddy's bull crap.

You need to know who the Kanes were to say anything about them. They were loving and caring people and were all about family. I would know because there are my family. Jerry would give you the shirt off his back for you and loved life. We do not know what really happen so keep your mouth off my family and dont judge no one for i am sure you dont want judged!!!!!!!!!! We loved his and his son and will miss them always.

Carry your grief privately then. Don't come here and expect sympathy for your family member who killed people and, by his actions, ended his 16-year-old son's life. You can miss them all you . you have to loomk beyond family to see what the world looks like. Feel bad for them all you want and I'm sorry for your grief, but he got what he deserved. Don't like that? too bad. Don't try to justify his actions.

If you are the 'Killer Kanes" family then I am suprised you aren't dead or in jail . Loving caring people don't raise their children(notice not child but children) to be killers. That great guy Jerry has one kid in jail for attempted 1st degree murder and died with another of his children in a shootout with police. The only tragedy here is that two police officers with 5 children of their own died doing their jobs. Not driving around putting on B.S seminars about avoiding foreclosures. If you are one of Jerry's kids please do everyone a favor and off yourself before you cause pain in other peoples lives. I hope they have a special place in hell for the cop killers!!

Wait... if they ask you for your papers or you go to jail then they are Nazi's? But.. but... but... isn't that what the Republicans in Arizona are doing to the people in their state? Does that mean that this ultra right-wing conservative anti-government nut-bag is saying that his own people, the Republicans of Arizona are Nazi's? Somebody call Glenn Beck!

The checkpoints do not require reasonable articulate suspicion of a crime before 'requiring' proof of identity, the AZ law does require that a crime has already occurred BEFORE they can investigate your status.

So yes, there is a difference.

It seems 24/7 Domestic Shortwave Hate Radio talk shows that directly enables mentally unstable paranoid people like Kane and other 'Lone Wolf" actors to feed the impetus of unstable minds to go an plan then commit acts of Domestic Terrorism. From David Koresh to Timmy McVeigh down the line to Joseph Stack and many others in an UN-BROKEN chain. All of them had/have ONE THING in common. They either heavily listened to or were given airtime and a microphone to vent their bile by so-called Domestic Shortwave "Patriot" Radio which if you ever listened to it sounds like a 24/7 KKK Rally on the air.

I don't understand why these hateful, paranoid people always take out thier anger on law enforcement officials. These men and women are working making a living like everybody else. It's not like they create the laws. I know there are a few rogue policemen out there but none of them deserve this, ever.

About a week ago I was on the interstate, smack dab in the middle of corporate America. Large sleek office buildings to the right and left. Corporate headquaters for the big dogs. Right in the middle of all that development I also saw some beautiful stretches of woods next to a lake. With the value of the real estate in that area, I have to conclude that the only way there are still open spaces around that lake was if my evil government bought the land and put it in trust. So there is one thing our evil government has done. Preserve open spaces.

Sad to think that we have people in the world and particularly in the U.S. who feel it necessary to take matters to such extreme. I blame the haters like Bauchman, Palin, Linbaugh, Hannity, Savage, and Levin for these misguided fools who feel they need to take things into their own hands just because they are against the government. If they dislike our Government so much, they they should go find themselves an island somewhere and live as they please with no government at all. Have at it fools.

That is crock! Might have been fine during the time of our founding fathers but this country has evolved, grown, progressed, and morphed. We have too many people with too many new technologies, scammers, cheats, criminals, money-hungry cheats, etc. to have things as they were. Our world is not like that because we, as a nation, has grown and evolved too far from the past. So what they advocate is utterly insane. Our world has changed and there is no going back. Get rid of internet, TV, Cable, computers, conservation, high tech security, large police and security forces, armed forces as we have it today, radar, satalites, then maybe, you can then get some similarity to what our founding fathers thought. but other than that, forget it. Besides, our founding fathers did not even see the advancement that was possible that we have today. If they had, I am willing to bet they would have had other thoughts in mind.
