President Obama To Visit Gulf Coast Oil Spill Friday

BEN FELLER   05/25/10 05:39 PM ET   AP

Obama

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama, seeking to show command of a crisis that has exasperated the nation, will head back to Louisiana on Friday to review efforts to stop the disastrous Gulf oil spill.

The White House announced Obama's trip but did not yet release details of exactly where he will go. The president will be in Louisiana for the day on Friday, flying there from Chicago, where he will be spending the long holiday weekend, and returning there at night.

The trip comes as Obama's administration is under mounting fire over how well it is overseeing a complex fix-it effort.

Millions of gallons of oil are still gushing into the Gulf following an oil rig explosion on April 20.

The administration's stand is that oil giant BP LLC is the legally responsible party but that the government is aggressively overseeing the company's efforts to plug the leaking oil well and working to mitigate the impact of the spill.

As impatience grows with BP and federal authorities, Obama is expected to speak about the crisis and take questions about it on Thursday at the White House, when he will receive a report from Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

In announcing Obama's Friday trip to the Gulf Coast, the White House contended it has "mobilized one of the largest responses to a catastrophic event in history."

The consequences of the accident – for the environment, the economy, BP and Obama – keep growing. Tuesday marked 35 days since the rig blew up.

This will be Obama's second trip to the region since the troubles began.

He went on May 2 and soberly warned of a "massive and potentially unprecedented environmental disaster."

The White House announced Obama's trip on the same day he headed to San Francisco for a night of political fundraisers for Democrats. He was to speak on the economy there on Wednesday before returning to Washington.

And one of the most ineffective. Where is the President going to be tomorrow? Does anybody know? I am in Mobile, AL and I'm thinking we should get some people on the ground to meet and greet the POTUS to show more urgency. We need to mobilize ALSO. If interested, I guess we have to become friends and send messages via facebook. Please hurry with responses if you are available.

Call me crazy but why can't they simply install a huge ring-like curtain of booms around this leak and use skimmers to pump it onto ships? Even if some of it drifts outside because of currents, logic tells you that most of the oil must be coming to the surface very near the hole below.

its a BIIIIG spill, prolly too late for that. plus, alot of the oil is submerged, and the booms are superficial. they do have tankers able to suck oil and water into huge storage tanks, i dont know how many, if any at all, of these ships are out there. It would behoove Obama to let that info known, people are really starting to get PO'd

There's not that much boom in the world. Also, the dispersant is the alternate route to skimming and removing.

Try an experiment. Fill your sink with cold water, say 42 degrees F. Pour some liquid cooking oil into the sink full of water. Observe oil floating on the surface? Now take paper towels and skim across the cooking oil slick with it. Feel the towel. Is it greasy? Add more oil to the sink. Now add dish detergent like Dawn (this is the dispersant) and agitate the water. Skim the surface with paper towels again. How's that skimmin' workin' for ya? Did the oil seem to go away (below the surface)?

That's nice. PR problem solved. Next time you wash your dishes, save the dirty dish water and put it in your aquarium. Your fish will love it.

The President is never really on vacation, but since you want to criticize. President has been on vacation for 29 days as opposed to 56 days for the same time period for President Bush. Give it a break and get a new talking point.

If President Obama is so mad at BP, why is Dr. Steven E. Koonin (recently chief scientist for BP) second Undersecretary for Science in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).????

Oh, don't you think it's important to have someone in that industry working for you?

Give it a Break People, Respect the fact that these fat ass corporations can take you out quick. Are you kidding me? The Prez will get no slack because the chickens are coming home to roost on his watch. Its planned destruction, a very sick Play unfolding in front of everyone, man its heavy .Revolution is off the table we are to infiltrated to do any thing about any of it. Remember Bush 2 had the pens for protestors? Good night and good luck.

It started with Wall Street, Supreme Court and now BP. The Corporations are running everything, including the media.
10:11 PM on 05/25/2010
The media and a bunch of non experts are crying about what Obama should do. They are pushing him to go down, purely as a symbolic move that has nothing to do with the work around plugging the gusher. No one who would have been in office could have stopped this gusher any faster. The problem is with the lax regulations that went on at least throughout the 8 years of the oil men administration of Bush Cheney. Usually Cheney, Halliburton's former CEO pipes up about everything. What dark corner is he waiting in?

im not happy with it either, and im a solid dem and Obama supporter. He needed to get a handle on this weeks ago. Eff BP- they are not doing anything to pick up oil on the surface of the gulf. get the military to commandeer a whole fleet of ships that can suck up this stuff and hold onto it or cleaning it. Bill BP later, but get it off the ocean.

He flys to Lousiana for three hours on Friday to make it look like he is involved. That's probably all the time Michelle would allow before they all go to Chicago for the weekend.
