'Smart Meters' Could Cost Denver Millions In Revenue From Parking Tickets

Since the city public works department began installing new solar-powered parking meters that accept credit cards and not just coins - no more will drivers be caught without spare change - the number of parking tickets has plummeted. That's good news for drivers, but it leaves City Hall short on a lucrative source of revenue. The 4,000 new "smart meters" are cutting into city revenue by a much greater margin than anticipated, though of course frustrated downtown motorists aren't shedding a tear.
