SEATTLE Wal-Mart says it's cutting the price of the most up-to-date iPhone in half. That's another sign Apple is getting ready to unveil a new model.

Wal-Mart says that starting Tuesday the iPhone 3GS with 16 gigabytes of storage space will cost $97 with a two-year contract with AT&T. It currently costs $197.

Leaked prototypes for an updated iPhone surfaced on blogs recently. The price cut could signal retailers are clearing the shelves to make room for a new Apple smart phone.

Apple declined to comment on whether it's planning to release a new iPhone soon, or whether it will also sell the iPhone 3GS for less.

The company's annual developer conference kicks off June 7. Apple unveiled the iPhone 3GS at the same event last year.

Predatory pricing. I have not set foot in one of these, made in a subsistence wage country, stores in years

Well I wanted one of the phones, and our local wal-mart here in NC said that the ATT reps had come into the store and taken every one of their iPhone3Gs' after being on sale for 2 days. They said they weren't selling well as their excuse. My brother checked the wal-mart in his town and they didn't have any either. I don't think it has anything to do with being sold out. ATT reps don't want to lose money...

Someone needs to proofread the headline for this story on the front page under the "Most Popular on Huffpost" banner. It reads "Walmart slahes iPhone" instead of "slashes."

Please Read!

This Walmart Deal is complete BS. I just called every Walmart in the Philadelphia area & surrounding suburbs and EVERY SINGLE ONE IS COMPLETELY SOLD OUT of the 16GB 3GS, and told me that they will NOT be getting any more in stock.

Additionally, many of the Walmarts I called informed me that they actually stopped receiving any new 16GB 3GS in stock MONTHS ago.

This is just yet another big BS marketing ploy by Walmart to get people in the stores.

If you don't believe me, call around...

I had the same problem here in New York. No one has them in stock and you can't buy online. Frustrated!

My AT&T contract is up in October and it looks like I'm booting the Iphone in favor of the HTC Hero. I'm tired of Apple dictating to me as to what I can add to my phone. I've had it with jailbreaks and unlocks and just want a phone that will work for me and not against me.

Got to give credit to Steve Jobs. He could sell deep freezers to those living in igloos. Burned by price reductions and terrible ATT service, people will undoubtedly line up for whatever Jobs offers next. I can't even use my ATT cell phone in my house--no reception unless I go outside for a powerful 2 bars.

Sad how you use "obsolete" and "outdated" in terms of the fashion of technology, rather than it's functionality.

An iPhone 3GS works very well and should continue to for years. If it suits one's needs, $97 is good value.
12:19 AM on 05/31/2010
Agreed. I still use the 3G, and for an "obsolete" phone, it's pretty awesome.
07:04 PM on 05/25/2010
They could reduce it to 0 and it's still got 3 problems:

1) It's still an Apple product (and thus, restricted and lacking functionality)
2) It's still tied to AT&T's coverage and
3) It's still inferior to ANY Android.
08:10 PM on 05/25/2010
I 100% agree! I ditched AT&T and my iPhone in favor of a Sprint Android. AT&T dropped every single call I ever made, and they charged a fortune for use of the iPhone. I absolutely adore my Samsung Moment and have been much more satisfied with the performance and ease of its use. I would recommend my Android over an iPhone to anyone, any time.

And while alot of my friends complain about sprint, in the 10 years I have been with them, I can count the number of dropped calls I have had and still have 5 fingers left. I have never had a problem with sprint.
