Ardi Rizal, Sumatran 2-Year Old, Smokes 40 Cigarettes A Day

First Posted: 05/26/10 01:05 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:35 PM ET

Below is an image of Ardi Rizal, aged 2, who smokes two packs of cigarettes a day.

The Sumatran toddler was first given a cigarette when he was just 18 months old.

'I'm not worried about his health, he looks healthy,' shrugged the boy's father Mohammad Rizal.

'He cries and throws tantrums when we don't let him smoke. He's addicted.'

The problems here are broader than a 2 year old smoking. He controls the father with his temper tantrums and gets lots of attention from others for his acting out behavior, including news coverage. I guess you can find poor parenting everywhere.

It sounds like the parents just need some education on the risks, since apparently this is not so uncommon in Indonesia as it should be, so its good the government is involved. It's not too hard to dry out a 2 year old. It's like they can sneak out of the house behind your back and go buy some smokes.

Uh...ok...so....what? Emphysema at 10? Congestive heart failure at 13? Lung Cancer at 9?

More proof that the human animal can do some insanely stupid things with their offspring.

Sadly, this is what happens when ANYBODY can breed. The spermdonor who calls himself father of this boy is no better than the mangy dog roaming around loose. The US tobacco Industry, having been ostracized in the USA has found a ready made treasure trove in third world countries such as Indonesia.ALL HONOR TO THE BOTTOM LINE phooey to morality/ethics...

The tobacco industry is controlled by multinational giants, mostly American. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if the likes of Philip Morris (Altria) or R. J. Reynolds made money of every puff the kid takes. Big tobacco has been promoting their products in the third world hard for decades now, trying to find new customers since we in the west smartened up

Yup.

You'd find Kent, Camel and Marlboro kites all over SE Asia.

I'm not gonna lie, my first reaction at this article was laughter. Then I felt deeply saddened for this boy and his father who, unfortunately, has no idea the harm he is causing his son.

let him throw a tantrum until he's blue in the face.( my own darling baby used to scream until she literally passed out). but maybe that way they wont get the tips they probably get by showing off their little freakshow......
