Olivia Bouler, 11-Year-Old Girl, Uses Artwork To Raise Money For Birds Harmed By Gulf Oil Spill

First Posted: 05/26/10 02:27 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:35 PM ET

UPDATE:

Since Olivia Bouler began her campaign to support the National Audubon Society's work rescuing birds affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, hundreds of individuals have contributed over $20,000 to her cause. For each donor, Olivia spends 30 minutes making an original watercolor featuring bird species from the Gulf region. AOL News, who featured Olivia in their artist series, has also pledged $25,000 to the Audubon Society to help Gulf Coast wildlife.

Olivia reflects on the success her fundraiser has had.

WATCH:

When 11-year-old Olivia Bouler saw news coverage of the damage caused by the Gulf Coast oil spill and the wildlife affected by the disaster, she was moved to tears. Olivia is a bird-lover and hopes to pursue a career as an ornithologist; she was also familiar with the Gulf Coast, an area she spends vacations with her family.

Hoping to help, The Guardian reports Olivia wrote to the National Audubon Society, offering her services as an artist to help them raise funds to protect birds threatened by the oil spill.

"I'm going to do it as long as they need help," Olivia told Al.com.

Each person that makes a donation to the National Audubon Society, The Sierra Club, The Weeks Bay Foundation, The Mobile Bay Estuary Program or the National Wildlife Federation can e-mail Olivia's mother to receive one of Olivia's drawings. E-mails should be sent to nadinebouler@hotmail.com. The Boulers have also set up a Facebook page to raise awareness about Olivia's project.

Moved by her granddaughter's efforts, Jane Bouler said "This child is doing what we all should be doing and she genuinely wants to help the birds."

Make BP pay $2 a gallon for salvaged Gulf of Mexico oil

It's a practical solution that some high school students came up with.

"And a child shall lead them"

We should all be so selfless. I am an artist and I feel shamed that a child thought of this before I did.

So what do you need? Besides a miracle.

Sheesh, if all people were like children. When they see that something is wrong, they act when they know that it would improve the situation.

I also noticed that the younger generations (Millenials and Z) are way more concerned about the environment than the older generations (Baby and X). I think they (including me) know that we are the ones who will acutally see the effects of global warming and environmental destruction. We will have to explain to our children and grandchildren why we didn't do anything to stop the mass extinction, forest destruction and rising sea levels.

This lady is one of those people that want to say that they did as much as they could. THe future will tell if we can beat those older generations that are reluctant to change.

This set-up is not being told truthfully by Audubon. I donated money with the assurances she's drawing a picture. Then AFTER the donation there was a link to the family with the caveat from audubon that MAYBE I'd get a drawing. Then the family sent me an email that the girl is only doing 10,000 drawings so I need to be in top 10,000. Ten thousand at 30 minutes per drawing? Thats 5000 hours. Not possible. These are obviously all copies. So the whole group is misrepresenting. It was disappointing that they are resorting to fraud.

It's wonderful that you donated...
Don't you think it's possible that this amazing girl started out believing she could fulfill all of the artwork needs of the expected donors and then she got (well deserved) publicity and it snowballed out of control to a point where it's not possible to draw a unique picture for all of the generous and caring donors.

I especially love her drawing of the pelican (my favorite bird) and would be thrilled to have a signed copy of it.

I do like her drawings, which is why we donated. I would have donated if I was receiving a copy, but I would have liked that stated up front. The fact that they chose to mislead is troubling.

I do believe there is a responsibility to present the facts accurately. To say they are all being hand-painted , 30 minutes (even 10 minutes), this is now clealry not the case. They should be doing the right thing and publicly amending their offer. The adults have colluded to alter the truth. What message is that sending to the kid when they are promoting what they are clearly not doing? My daughter would not feel comfortable lying about it, I know this..

That's only 208 days without sleep. Piece of cake. Oops, no time for cake either.

Perhaps BP's management team should be required to do some Gulf watercolor painting too. In addition to actually paying in full for the enormous disaster that occurred on their watch, of course.

Such a genuine attempt to personally take action to help a cause she truely cares about! Sometimes, society needs to look to the innocence of children to find the right way.

If she truly wants to save the environment in the long term, invest those funds in defeating people like the members of the Chamber of Commerce, who are prepared to let the taxpayers pay for the cleanup. BP should be paying for 100% of this spill RIGHT NOW. But they are already cheating the fishermen with ridiculous lowball offers, among other problems.

Ah..come on..she's a kid who is doing her bit to help the Aaudoban Society clean these birds. If everyone behaved like her, the world would be a lot nicer place to live in.

Why don't you figure out a way to help and stop criticizing her

I wasn't criticizing her. It's great that she's raising awareness and some cash, and doing it in an artistic way. But BP should be paying for the cleanup. BP should be paying people to clean the birds.

If everyone behaved like her, the world would be a nicer place. Most people don't behave like her, so the world is becoming a cesspool. We've got a Pacific garbage patch that's mind boggling in size. We've got an Atlantic garbage patch that is growing. We've got Monsanto treating our farmland and food like BP treats the Gulf of Mexico. Our nuclear plants are leaking radioactive materials.

I'm just saying that we need to stay on top of BP, and on top of our legislators for YEARS on this thing. Otherwise, in a year or so, just like after Katrina, most of the country will move on to the next season of American Idol. And the politicians and BP will move on to more profits.

Not everything is wrapped up in politics.
I'd rather see her use the money directly to help the birds than to fund some abstract organization that may or may not misappropriate the funds.

I wish this creative, hard-working young lady, who by the way speaks her convictions without apology, could come speak to one of my 100 level classes in the fall. She is fabulous. I'm with her teacher on the insects and humans. When I said something similar in one of my classes the students looked at me as if I had spoken some heresy. But it totally made sense to this young person. What a good girl.
