UPDATE: BP COO Doug Suttles tells Reuters that it appears that the oil gushing into the Gulf has been replaced by drilling mud. Suttles said that "...the way we know we've been successful is [oil] stops flowing.

COVINGTON, La. (AP) -- BP started pumping heavy mud into the leaking Gulf of Mexico well Wednesday and said everything was going as planned in the company's boldest attempt yet to plug the gusher that has spewed millions of gallons of oil over the last five weeks.

BP hoped the mud could overpower the steady stream of oil, but chief executive Tony Hayward said it would be at least 24 hours before officials know whether the attempt has been successful. The company wants to eventually inject cement into the well to seal it.

"I'm sure many of you have been watching the plume," Hayward said from Houston. "All I can say is it is unlikely to give us any real indication of what is going on. Either increases or decreases are not an indicator of either success or failure at this time."

The stakes are high. Fishermen, hotel and restaurant owners, politicians and residents along the coast are fed up with BP's so far ineffective attempts to stop the oil leak that sprang after an offshore drilling rig exploded April 20. Eleven workers were killed, and by the most conservative estimate, 7 million gallons of crude have spilled into the Gulf, fouling Louisiana's marshes and coating birds and other wildlife.

"We're doing everything we can to bring it to closure, and actually we're executing this top kill job as efficiently and effectively as we can," BP Chief Operating Officer Suttles said Wednesday night.

The top kill has worked above ground but has never before been tried 5,000 feet beneath the sea. Company officials peg its chance of success at 60 to 70 percent.

President Barack Obama said "there's no guarantees" it will work. The president planned a trip to Louisiana on Friday.

"We're going to bring every resource necessary to put a stop to this thing," he said.

Meanwhile, dozens of witness statements obtained by The Associated Press show a combination of equipment failure and a deference to the chain of command impeded the system that should have stopped the gusher before it became an environmental disaster.

A live video stream Wednesday showed pictures of the blowout preventer, as well as the oil gushing out. At other times, the feed showed mud spewing out, but BP said this was not cause for alarm.

A weak spot in the blowout preventer could blow under the pressure, causing a brand new leak.

Gene Beck, a petroleum engineering professor at Texas A&M in College Station, said the endeavor would likely fail quickly if the mud could not overcome the pressure of the oil.

"The longer it goes, maybe the better news that is," Beck said.

Frustration with BP and the federal government has only grown since efforts to stop the leak have failed.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, both outspoken critics, led a boat tour around the oil-fouled delta near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Some 100 miles of Louisiana coastline had been hit by the oil, the Coast Guard said.

Through the Mississippi's South Pass, there were miles-long passages that showed no indication of the oil, and the air smelled fresh and salty. Nearby fish were leaping and tiny seabirds dove into the water.

But not far away at Pass a Loutre, the odor wafting above the oily water was that of an auto shop.

"There's no wildlife in Pass a Loutre. It's all dead," Nungesser said.

The Coast Guard also said no dispersants were used Wednesday in an effort to reduce the chemicals in the Gulf, but crews were continuing the burn and skim the oil off the surface.

I am a us merchant marine that has had dealings with BP over 30 years. They were always a class act, but as they say s^&t happens. When it does on the water; it goes from bad to catastropic in minutes. We,that live or the gulf coast are sitting and waiting for the oil to hit our shores. We should use vaccum barges, tugs and all available fishing boats to go after the oil itself before it reaches the shore. It would take major manpower, equipment and money which Bp should pay for, but with good weather and the grace of God and much luck maybe it could be stopped. The oil that is skimed from the water could be discharged to waiting barges for refinement up the Mississippi river to refinery tanks onshore. The money could then be used for the cost of all of this asit will be astronomical; But BP should pay

Ok..now that the oil is stopped. I think we should find the people that need to be jailed for the crime. All responsible parties should share exactly that their greed and laziness cuase such a historic diaster!

BP spill 2-5 previous estimate:

"The amount of oil that has been leaking into the Gulf for the past 37 days might be as high as 25,000 barrels per day, according to preliminary results from the government team assembled to evaluate the flow. Based on a variety of estimates from team, the spill is most likely between 12,000 and 19,000 barrels per day, the head of the team said Thursday."

From her official bio on MMS

"S. Elizabeth (Liz) Birnbaum assumed duties as Director of the Minerals Management Service (MMS) on July 15, 2009.

As MMS Director, Birnbaum administers programs that ensure the effective management of renewable energy, such as wind, wave, and ocean current energy; and traditional energy and mineral resources on the nation’s Outer Continental Shelf, including the environmentally safe exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas, as well as the collection and distribution of revenues for minerals developed on federal and American Indian lands."

I think if I took a barrel of motor oil and dumped it into the Santiam (a river near me), I would probably get arrested. Surely if I continued barrel after barrel, they would eventually seize my belongings and my person to make me stop.

This shows how corporations are way more important than people or the environment. So far, no arrests, and they get to continue dumping over 5,000 barrels a day, killing life and livelihood.

If anyone but the oil company dumped on the people and environment the chemical poisons (dispersents and accelerants) they have, and hid the fact that the company knows they are dangerous and ineffective to neutralize the threat, and that the only purpose for the use of these chemicals was to cover up the extent of the original crime, they would be in prison now!! Is the government taking measures to determine the assets and financial holdings of BP before they have a chance to shuffle it out of reach so that when the bill is in for the devastation they caused, and the oil company declares bancruptcy, they will have some evidence of that crime? No..they will just be referred to in the media as the "now defunct" oil company and they will continue to operate under a new name!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5oZ8baaBOY

I am thinking that Top Kill has given us an almost perfect estimate of flow rate, at least on Day Whatever-it-is of this crisis.

We know how much volume we have to fill (the BOP and drill pipe). We know pressure in the BOP at the start of the operation. We know the pressure at which we pumped mud, and we know how much we pumped.

It should be a simple matter, then, to calculate the total amount of oil and gas that have escaped. We throw in some adjustments for the higher pressure during Top Kill, and some adjustments for pressure drop in the well over time (most likely it was greatest, and flow rate highest, soon after the initial disaster), and voila we have a highly accurate estimate of how much oil and gas have spewed into the Gulf.

Supposedly BP is injecting 40-50 barrels a minute into the well. Let's see, BP started with 1,000 barrels a day as the flow rate, then grudgingly admitted it might be 5,000 bbl/day. When they showed video of the leak people calculated that the flow rate was probably closer to 50-70,000 bbl/day.

A flow rate of 40 bbl per minute equals 57,600 bbl/day. A flow rate of 50 bbl per minute equals 72,000 bbl/day.

Hmmmm, looks like those 50-70,000 bbl/day estimates were pretty close, doesn't it!

70,000 bbl/day means a fine of 300 million/day

BP have demonstrated every criteria for classification as foreign terrorists. They did not have proper paperwork to drill in the region. They built a chemical spewing bomb while lying about the safety features. They lied to the authorities at every opportunity (we believe that BP would spend billions to drill a well that was generating 5000 gallons a day) they continue to pour horrifically toxic chemicals onto the people and land and those toxic chemicals are only intended to cause the oil to sink and be less visible or dispersed as they like to say like this is helping and it is not! The burning is even worse for the environment and the people and the company knows this. No!.. hair and peat are not the answer for many reasons but there is a product that would do the job. Here we go again..BP dumping more crap into the gulf. They are saying that the "heavy mud" is water based, non-toxic!! Does this make sense? NO! First of all, water based does not mean non-toxic. Second, if the "mud" had no chemiistry that would cause it to solidify, what would be the point? What makes it "heavy" mud? Where is this mud coming from? Is it sterile or carrying bacteria and life forms foreign to the region that will become another devastation to the region in the future? All of this information should be posted and provided to the media! We continue to let BP run the show. The military does not have to rush in and take over operations. If the military were brought in to observe, assist and monitor everything, they would be learning and would be the eyes and ears of the President.

Everyone is concerned about future terrorist attacks of the United States, but BP is doing way more damage than any recent terrorists attempt at attacking us. We are truly our own worst enemies.
