Billy Joe Gregg, Conklin Dairy Farms Employee, Charged With Animal Cruelty After Abuse Video Surfaces

MEGHAN BARR   05/26/10 07:38 PM ET   AP

Billy Joe Gregg Conklin Dairy Farms

CLEVELAND — A dairy farm worker was charged Wednesday with 12 counts of cruelty to animals after a welfare group released a video it says shows him and others beating cows with crowbars and poking them with pitchforks.

The video was recorded in an undercover investigation at Conklin Dairy Farms Inc., said Mercy For Animals, a not-for-profit group that publicizes what it calls cruel practices in the dairy, meat and egg industries and promotes a vegan diet.

The video shows workers holding down newborn calves and stomping on their heads. It shows one worker wiring a cow's nose to a metal bar near the ground and repeatedly beating it with another bar while it bleeds.

The charged worker, Billy Joe Gregg Jr., 25, was jailed in Mechanicsburg and was to be arraigned Thursday, Marysville prosecutor Tim Aslaner said. The Delaware, Ohio, resident didn't have a lawyer, the Marysville Municipal Court said. A telephone number listed under his name was disconnected.

Each cruelty to animals count he faces has a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $750 fine.

Conklin Dairy Farms, a fourth-generation family operation based in Plain City, condemned the video footage and said Gregg was fired on Wednesday. It said it was cooperating with authorities.

"We will not condone animal abuse on our farm," the dairy said in a statement released Wednesday. "We have launched our own internal investigation into this matter and will be conducting interviews with everyone on our farm who works with our animals."

The sheriff's office said the investigation was ongoing and may result in further charges.

Investigators are reviewing about 20 hours of raw video footage the animal welfare group says it secretly recorded at the farm between April 28 and Sunday.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the dairy to provide security while Gregg was fired. When deputies asked why Gregg was being fired, they learned about the video, which had been presented to the Marysville prosecutor's office on Monday.

"We hadn't even seen the YouTube video," Chief Deputy Tom Morgan said.

Morgan said there are three to four people featured in the video. He said the footage shows Gregg punching and striking cattle in the face and various parts of their bodies with metal pipes and pitchforks.

"We've got a lot of video that has to be reviewed," he said. "And we have to identify who all is involved."

Last year, Mercy For Animals, which is based in Chicago, released a video showing workers at an Iowa egg hatchery tossing male chicks into a grinder. Industry groups said such instantaneous euthanasia was a common practice because male chicks can't lay eggs or be raised quickly enough to be sold for meat.

With all that I am, I hope this poor excuse of a human is tortured beyond human comprehension! He deserves no mercy for all the beatings he has given to all defenseless animals. I hope he is beaten with a sold metal rod and if he is jailed, I hope the animal lovers in jail have a good ole time with him. May he be proded endlessly, beaten until he cannot stand and beat some more, his "tail" broken, thrown on the ground & kicked in his head repeatedly, beaten on his genitals, and survive these beatings only to endure more daily. He should be hung by his balls, tazed and left hanging until they fall off. Force a "hoof" up his ** making him "moo" the entire time. I hope he ends up being countless prisioners "dates", and for every animal he has abused may he suffer 10 fold for each. My only regret is that I could inflict some pain on him in defense of all the animals. Throw him in a ditch then throw all the carcasses of the animals he has abused/killed on top of him and leave him there! After all of this, then tortue him!

I wonder whether he would be so abusive to an animal with claws and teeth, that could defend itself. What a poor excuse for a human being.

It looks like Gregg has decided to plead not guilty to the 12 animal cruelty charges:

I had to watch the whole video . . My reaction was get involved. I cried for those poor animals. What is this world coming too? . The owner had commited a vile cruel act , has not been arrested. The sherriffs dont understand the Law. A JOKE. They asked 5 agencies to get involved in the case but the laws are vague on what is considered cruelty . I spoke to sheriffs ,
they said its a gray area. more ignorance. its black and white and they need to arrest all who use a pitch fork as a hanling tool. Kicking a downer cow in the head is cruel . The law does state that no one is allowed to sell the meat of a downer cow . But conklin wants to get his cow upabusively to get a can of this cows milk for sale. How twisted. No beef or milk allowed for human consumption of a downer cow. On the other hand we have the dept of agricuture stating to me that when a cow is down the best way to get them up is make them uncomfortable so they will move . I say Moronic!!! this animal is already uncomfortable and does not need to be kicked severely in the head. there are ways to raise an animal if indeedneeds to be raised. This farm has deplorable conditions and commit horrific acts and they arent gonna be charged. state is run by ignorant laws and lawmakers.

Hopefully, someone will get their hands on him and the law will not have to worry with him ever again!

I read an update today on another calf abuse case from last fall which has has resulted in arrest warrants for 2 men from the Bushway Packing slaughterhouse in Vermont. Frank Perretta, who was a co-owner of Bushway, has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty and Christopher Gaudette has been charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty.

The second link provides a bit more detailed info and includes a link to past articles regarding this case:

Billy Joe Gregg is now facing a felony charge for improper handling of a firearm, according to the following article. If convicted of the felony charge Gregg could receive prison time of up to 18 months.

Thanks for the update.

This deranged violent individual needs to be convicted of a felony for purposes of being identified as such for the rest of his life. A convicted felon with any and all loss of personal freedom that comes with it.

He is a danger to animals and humans both.

Thanks Zenchick for posting that update, I'm so happy they found something to charge him with a felony. :-)

Here's a confession - I've been really bothered and a little obsessed with this Conklin Farm story, and I called the sheriff's office that is investigating this case. I wanted to see instant results, like the farm shut down and animals sent to Farm Sanctuary, Gary Conklin and other farm workers arrested, and Billy Joe charged with a felony.

The man who answered the phone kind of surprised me. He told me that his whole department was really disturbed by the video and doing everything they could to bring justice to this case. He said that they had called in for extra help from other counties around the state and that they were all working around the clock. He sounded genuine, and it gave me some relief.

Now they did find a felony, not for exactly what I wanted, but hopefully it will keep that monster locked up a little longer.

Thanks again zenchick - you're fanned :^)

Thanks for the updates and information, berrylava. This story disturbed me greatly and I didn't even see the video. I have stopped buying the milk from the grocery stores (bought from a local farmer's market instead, following a suggestion posted here), because I could not bring myself to have my morning cup of tea. I very sincerely hope that the suffering that was caught on the video has a positive impact/effect on the industry.

The Conklin Dairy video is the most vile thing I have ever seen.

I hope his prison roommate is 6'6", 300 pounds and even more sadistic than Billy Joe is, and feeling very amorous.

I wonder if Billy Joe will be laughing then. I know I will !!!

Billy Joe Gregg Jr's mug shot shows a smirk that I would love to remove with the very pitch fork they used on those poor, sweet cows.

After a quick perusal of this thread and the others, I feel caught in the middle between the extreme ends of the spectrum. On 1 end the PETA members who are so politicized on the issue that they feel that no animals should be domesticated for any purpose whatsoever, which hearkens back to a news item that I read some years back where a PETA funded animal shelter was automatically euthanising every domestic animal brought through their doors due to a system of ethics that precludes any animal being kept as a pet. Their method of corpse disposal was just dumping the poor things in a dumpster out back. It was sickening to me.

On the other end you, the "So what, and damn anyone who tries to take my meat away and pity the poor PTSD vet". Give me a break. Plenty of people came back from Iraq without the desire or need to torture other living beings. If this guy came out that way, it's a safe bet he went in that way. This guy should be cut no slack at all. I hope they throw him in the can till he rots.

What ever happened to treating all other innocent living creatures the way in which you would wish to be treated?

I've gone back to a Vegan diet but I'm not going to go abandon my pets in the woods based on a mistaken assumption that they will revert to a feral, yet happy life.
11:36 PM on 06/02/2010
I suppose I'm in the middle as well since I'm an animal lover who is vegetarian and has several adopted cats whom I adore! Pretty much every animal lover I know has a shelter dog or cat as a pet. And some of these pet owners are also members of PETA, so I don't think all of their members are against having pets.

I don't know the official stance PETA has regarding pets. I'm not a member and am not familiar with most of their campaigns. I have received an email or two from friends that are supporters and one of these emails was about a program funded by PETA in which dog houses were set up for dogs chained and/or living in backyards, so that they would not be exposed to the elements. I always thought this sounded like a worthwhile program. Other than that, I'm not too familiar with the group.

At one point someone mentioned that Gary Conklin himself is pictured early in the video? Has that been substantiated yet, or is it erroneous info? I cannot fathom owning a farm and being so busy that you don't notice there are calves, cows, bulls with injuries that aren't 'normal'. If he wasn't directly involved in the abuse, then I seriously suspect Gary Conklin was turning a blind eye and operating under the 'ignorance is bliss' theory.

Those poor poor animals. Let's not forget the proven, direct correlation between animal abuse, and the abuse of humans.
03:39 PM on 06/01/2010
Right now the good side, the side that is angered by the abuse of innocent animals, is searching for evidence of abuse ....the actual cows. Cows were sent away every week. They are looking for the cows that were hurt and or died. If still alive they will be able to stay at Farm Sanctuary and live in peace for the rest of their lives.

Once they find this evidence, the farm can be seized as it should be. So let's hope they find it.

Also, let's hope people try non dairy alternatives and much harsher laws against animal abuse in Ohio.
02:09 PM on 06/15/2010
Don't try dairy alternatives. Soliel, you are trying to put family farms out of business. Abuse happens on rare occasions. Why would someone abuse an animal that supports their family. There are sick people, but you can't stereotype everybody, if you know what that means.

Please don't listen to this farmer. Go visit a Dairy farm. I live in Calif and they treat their cows horrible. Please go on YouTube or the HSUS!! Oh God, what they do to these poor cows when they can no longer give milk. IT IS HORRIFIC!!! Rips your heart out.. Happy cows do not live in Calif. Most of these farmer's are terrible. Remember a year ago when it showed a fork lift dragging cows that could no longer walk because they were spent...How dare you tell these people untruths.. Shame on your soul!!!

The big problem with him being fired is that the owner of the dairy is also in the video, seen clearly beating, kicking and punching a cow. I suspect he's going to be arrested, too. (I hope).
