Think diabetes means you're doomed to a life of joyless eating? Think again.

Dr. Howard Shapiro, co-author of Eat and Beat Diabetes With Picture Perfect Weight Loss, appeared on ABC news to discuss how people suffering from diabetes can still eat nutritious, decadent foods.

According to Dr. Shapiro, many of the foods we think are healthy are really hurting us. By making more mindful eating decisions, we can indulge in rich, delicious foods -- but with half the calories.

I'm diabetic for 15 yrs. Blood sugar was 400 when I found out, now it's 97-115. I tried to get insurance when I lost mine, was declined because of diabetes. One company would insure me for $1,200. a month. I declined! I take no medicines and have controlled the diabetes with diet and using diabetic preventative supplements. I cannot agree with the potatoes, corn, bread, oats, waffles...the GRAINS. I check my BS to see how foods affect it. Potatoes, oats, corn, and wheat products are some of the worst offenders -raising BS 175 points and more. It doesn't make sense to eat foods that raise blood sugar (wearing out an already exhausted pancreas) just because you can take insulin to lower it or other medicines with side effects. Insulin is a fat producing hormone creating a vicious cycle. Type 2 diabetics already have too much insulin, which is already damaging the body. (Dr. Richard Bernstein - a Type 1 diabetic, has a book that helps people get off this roller coaster and it's low carb. I would also stay away from many of the fruits, except only in the afternoon, a small amount of berries, 1/2 a grapefruit, or 1/2 of a granny smith apple, along with a few nuts. Most vegetables are wonderful. That's what I do anyway and have not had ANY complications. I use an equal amount of ground flax and nuts, and protein powder as my flour substitute. Eating smaller portions is key.
