Democrats Block McCain's Attempt To Send 6,000 More Troops To Mexican Border

Mccain Border

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain resurrected a proposal to send an additional 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S-Mexico border just hours after President Barack Obama's Democratic allies in the Senate killed the plan.

The Arizona Republican says security along the order has deteriorated so badly that 3,000 guard troops are needed just to help protect his state. Even though McCain won support from a dozen Democrats, he failed Thursday to muster the 60-vote supermajority required to adopt his plan under Senate rules.

Later, McCain prevailed in a key Senate panel and inserted the measure into a defense policy bill that will come to the floor this summer.

Democrats also repelled more than $2 billion in additional border security spending proposed by border-state Republicans John Cornyn of Texas and Jon Kyl of Arizona.

The action came as the Senate continued debate on an almost $60 billion measure funding Obama's troop surge in Afghanistan, foreign aid and domestic disaster relief.

The GOP proposals were comparable to those made several years ago when many Republicans pressed for border security steps, such as a border fence, instead of a more comprehensive approach to overhauling the nation's immigration system. Obama supports comprehensive immigration reforms, but prospects for substantive legislation appear bleak in an election year. Just Tuesday, he promised to send 1,200 Guard troops to the border.

In the past, McCain has advocated changes to immigration laws that would give illegal immigrants in the U.S. an opportunity to earn their citizenship. But as violence along the border has escalated – and in the face of a spirited primary challenge from former Rep. J.D. Hayworth – McCain has adopted a harder line on immigration issues.

"The borders are broken," McCain said Thursday. "We have an obligation to our citizens to secure our border and allow them to lead lives where they not live in fear."

Kyl proposed expanding a program that throws illegal immigrants in jail for two weeks before deporting them back to Mexico, which he said is a deterrent to them trying again.

Cornyn wanted money for state and local law enforcement agencies, unmanned drone aircraft and other equipment, and additional Border Patrol officers and immigration agents.

Both amendments got 54 votes but fell short of the required 60-vote supermajority.

"Until we deal with this broken border, we are not going to be able to deal with other aspects of our broken immigration system," Cornyn said.

A top Democrat said Republicans were throwing money at the problem and urged waiting until Obama sends up his border security plan next week.

"This is a huge amount of money ... from colleagues who talk fiscal moderation," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. "It's sort of throwing an enormous amount of money at the problem."

Obama on Tuesday promised to send 1,200 Guard troops to the border to support efforts to block drug trafficking and temporarily supplement Border Patrol agents until more agents can be trained. He also pledged $500 million for improved border security. The money could be added to the measure during House-Senate negotiations.

To all those who think that Obama is sending troops to the border to help the states. He is sending troops to the border on Calderon's request. They are not there to help enforce immigration law according to the state dept. Calderon has been told they will not arrest illegals. Big suprise EH.

Hey Johnny, how about you send some troops to Lake Lucille in Alaska before you get kicked out of office? Palin family needs some protection... a little late for Bristol.

Seems like this border issue could be handled much more cheaply than pouring money into the pockets of "contractors" who say they're building a fence, and install non-functional surveilence equipment at government (our) expense.

Get a small flee of planes. Cesna's would probably do. Make it clear that at least twice a week one of the planes will be piloted by McCain. Then send them back and forth along the border.

With his ability to crash, no one will want to take the chance to be anywhere he might crash into them. Bad guys and simple people alike would know McCain could be about to single-handedly clean up the illegal crossing issues.

Problem solved.

TODAY’S REPUBLICANS ARE AMERICA'S ENEMY WITHIN

Republicans ARE practicing seditious DEMAGOGUERY and anti-democracy OBSTRUCTIONISM intended to destabilize our economy for purposes of political exploitation.

Republicans AREN'T making a sincere effort to STOP the bleeding THEIR incompetent leadership and failed policies created. Instead, they're using inflammatory lies and accusations as a smokescreen to conceal their subversive agenda, which is to cause President Obama and America to fail so they can blame Democrats for the consequences of THEIR calamitous mismanagement.

Republicans ARE preposterously professing that THEIR disgraceful political WHORING had nothing to do with the banking, real estate, stock market and employment catastrophes that resulted.

Republicans ARE trying to hamstring Democrats to prevent them from repairing the damage caused during a Republican presidency that was irresponsibly enabled by Republican Senators and Representatives.

Republicans ARE offering ridiculous arguments meant solely to disrupt and prevent progressive change. They'd rather divide America and create political gridlock than endure the political consequences of effective Democratic governance.

Republicans AREN'T the LOYAL OPPOSITION; they ARE the ENEMY WITHIN whose mercenary priorities have eroded their moral and ethical standards to the point that depravity and betrayal have become their preferred modus operandi.

It's one thing to advocate their conservative beliefs; it's another thing entirely to willfully sabotage America's government because a successful Democratic presidency would not be vulnerable to the greed, fears and hatreds that have produced and sustained the despicable Republican anti-government corporatism and anti-Christian faux theocracies that are poisoning and crippling American society.

Are we crazy??? Do we want to lose BOTH Houses this November??? We can't solve the immigration problem without fixing the border first and you can't do with with a few soldiers or border agents. It's amazing how we continue to shoot ourselves in the foot by doing nothing First, we did nothing for the economy. Next, we did nothing about the oil disaster in the Gulf. And now, we're doing nothing about securing the border. What is going on???
12:00 PM on 05/28/2010
WE AREN'T CRAZY, BUT YOU ARE BEING MANIPULATED BY BIG BUSINESS INTERESTS!

We can't solve the immigration "problem" by trying to prevent the bees from being attracted to honey. The only way to solve the immigration problem is to focus on eliminating the honey of employers acting illegally by offering jobs to illegal immigrants.

Why are we sending troops to guard our borders, costing taxpayers millions/billions of dollars, when all we have to do is enforce employment laws and arrest and prosecute the American businessmen/women who are attracting illegal immigrants by hiring them?
02:43 PM on 06/02/2010
Big business wants to have the illegals as cheap labor. Secure the border!
12:12 PM on 05/28/2010
I'm so tired of WE GOT TO FIX THE BORDER. What exactly do you want to fix. This border is exactly the same as it was 100 year ago. Their is no horde of Mexicans invading our country. That's pure conservative poppycock. I suspect there are far fewer today than there were in the 90's when our economy was really humming. This is a economic issue not a military one. Start rounding up business owners who hire undocumented workers and you world solve this so called problem. Terrorist. Christ, are you people crazy. Your afraid of some turban wearing, sandal clod arab. I'm afraid of our out of control police state. Democrats should stand up for the least among us and let the heavens fall..

I agree with you on the employer sanctions and putting teeth into them and strict enforcement as part of the equation. But what would that do for the problem of drug runners, trafficking in people for prostitution, people wanted in Mexico for crimes etc? However you are right, employer sanctions enforced would be the right place to start then work from there.

John McCain - if we cannot institute term limits for Senators, then we should certainly institute age limits, 70 years old, hats off, enjoy your retirement. At 73, he is overdue to take up another hobby.

The immigration issue involving people of color has become SOOOOO pressing now that we have a President who is a person of color.

Or was it that America considered George W. Bush too much of an absolute dunce to even confront an issue like immigration?

Listen to John McCain--and DO THE OPPOSITE! America will be safer.
