Rafael Nadal Watch: $525,000 Timepiece At French Open (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 05/27/2010 4:17 pm   Updated: 05/25/2011 5:35 pm

Rafael Nadal is wearing a little something extra on his wrist at the French Open this year, and it's worth more than a half-million dollars. The tennis superstar is equipped with a valuable watch under a new sponsorship agreement. The Independent reports that the timepiece is a "specially designed lightweight watch, only 50 of which will go on sale." Total cost? $535,000.

According to the New York Times, the arrangement is unusual because "most [tennis players] who are paid to wear luxury watches do so only at press conferences and charity matches."

Scroll down to see photos of Nadal playing with the watch. Is it ok for him to wear?

If my $29.95 Casio sports watch indicates that it is 2:15 PM on Sunday, what time will his watch indicate that it is?

"...and it's worth more than a half-million dollars..."

Correction. It has a price tag of more than a half-million dollars. What it is WORTH is considerably less than that.

The watch would pay for 9 and a half 55K a year jobs the Republicans can blame Obama for not creating. Just sayin'

No, the watch tells time. If someone buys one, yes, that money could be better spent. But there's no more equivalency between that watch and jobs than there is between your car and jobs ("Hey, my car could pay for two-thirds of a 40K a year job, I guess that means I should walk, instead.").

My car costs 80% of a 40K job but I can't get to work without it. But I don't need an alarm clock to get up in the morning.

Keep your car. My comment speaks to what I think is a weird priority. N'est pas?

Wow, i'll hope it doesn't bother him in the game because of the watch's weight. BTW, Nadal will be cruising into the final again and this time he's gonna claimed his title from Roger.

McEnroe was mocking Nadal for wearing a watch. Mac is right,a watch is not the thing to wear while playing tennis.

They should have charged one million for the watch, after all it is the ugliest watch ever made and is impossible to read. Publicity uber alles.

Why wouldn't he wear it?

Think his locker at the French Open is that safe?

I'll wait. It'll be on eBay in a few minths for $250,000.

For that price, the watch should be able to hit the tennis ball.

Does all this remind you of a classic line from the Mel Brooks film "The Producers" when someone said "That's it baby, when you got it, flaunt it! Flaunt it!"?

Give it enough time (no pun intended) and it will run for less than $50 on the streets of Bangkok. I mean exactly the same design color and functionality. Only your wallet could tell the difference.
