Sarah Burton has been named the new creative director of Alexander McQueen, WWD reports. Burton was formerly head of women's wear at Alexander McQueen. McQueen committed suicide in February, 2010.

Burton graduated from London's Central Saint Martins college, also Alexander McQueen's alma mater, in 1997. She began working with McQueen in 1996.

"The creation of modern, beautifully crafted clothes was at the heart of Lee's vision. I intend to stay true to his legacy," Burton said in a statement.

She had earned raves for her completion of Alexander McQueen's final collection, which was presented in Paris in March.

This is the best way to cash in some more on McQueen's legacy. Nobody could replace him, well, no problem, let's have someone who can copy him for another couple of years. It's not easy either - I have no doubt Ms Burton is very talented, very sensitive, after all McQueen selected her as his foremost assistant for 15 years, but let's face it - she's never put on her own show, she's never walked the walk like McQueen himself and the rest of them. She will finish all of his unfinished work, by then his brand will wane a bit (since there will be nothing original that used to attract people in the first place coming out), and then they will hire a diffrent designer with a signature style. If somebody of McQueen's talent should appear in the future, they wouldn't go work at McQueen's (just like McQueen himself didn't go work at YSL), they would start their own thing.
But, hell, what can you do. A genius is dead and all that might have been his future work is dead too. I loved him. Many people did.

Even tho NOBODY will ever truly replace Lee, Im glad to see his brand moving forward. Its the best way to remember one of the greatest designers of our time.

I totally agree with you. Im glad that they hired someone who worked with him for so long too instead of looking for a designer outside of the company. The best of luck to her!
