22-Mile Oil Plume Under Gulf Nears Rich Waters

MATTHEW BROWN and JASON DEAREN   05/28/10 11:40 AM ET   AP

Second Oil Leak

NEW ORLEANS — A thick, 22-mile plume of oil discovered by researchers off the BP spill site was nearing an underwater canyon, where it could poison the foodchain for sealife in the waters off Florida.

The discovery by researchers on the University of South Florida College of Marine Science's Weatherbird II vessel is the second significant undersea plume reported since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20. The plume is more than 6 miles wide and its presence was reported Thursday.

The cloud was nearing a large underwater canyon whose currents fuel the foodchain in Gulf waters off Florida and could potentially wash the tiny plants and animals that feed larger organisms in a stew of toxic chemicals, another researcher said Friday.

Larry McKinney, executive director of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, said the DeSoto Canyon off the Florida Panhandle sends nutrient-rich water from the deep sea up to shallower waters.

McKinney said that in a best-case scenario, oil riding the current out of the canyon would rise close enough to the surface to be broken down by sunlight. But if the plume remains relatively intact, it could sweep down the west coast of Florida as a toxic soup as far as the Keys, through what he called some of the most productive parts of the Gulf.

The plume was detected just beneath the surface down to about 3,300 feet, said David Hollander, associate professor of chemical oceanography at USF.

Hollander said the team detected the thickest amount of hydrocarbons, likely from the oil spewing from the blown out well, at about 1,300 feet in the same spot on two separate days this week.

The discovery was important, he said, because it confirmed that the substance found in the water was not naturally occurring and that the plume was at its highest concentration in deeper waters. The researchers will use further testing to determine whether the hydrocarbons they found are the result of dispersants or the emulsification of oil as it traveled away from the well.

The first such plume detected by scientists stretched from the well southwest toward the open sea, but this new undersea oil cloud is headed miles inland into shallower waters where many fish and other species reproduce.

The researchers say they are worried these undersea plumes may be the result of the unprecedented use of chemical dispersants to break up the oil a mile undersea at the site of the leak.

Hollander said the oil they detected has dissolved into the water, and is no longer visible, leading to fears from researchers that the toxicity from the oil and dispersants could pose a big danger to fish larvae and creatures that filter the waters for food.

"There are two elements to it," Hollander said. "The plume reaching waters on the continental shelf could have a toxic effect on fish larvae, and we also may see a long term response as it cascades up the food web."

Dispersants contain surfactants, which are similar to dishwashing soap.

A Louisiana State University researcher who has studied their effects on marine life said that by breaking oil into small particles, surfactants make it easier for fish and other animals to soak up the oil's toxic chemicals. That can impair the animals' immune systems and cause reproductive problems.

"The oil's not at the surface, so it doesn't look so bad, but you have a situation where it's more available to fish," said Kevin Kleinow, a professor in LSU's school of veterinary medicine.

Yesterday, TONY Hayward BP CEO, was on CNN telling us all that there is no underwater plume, that his "scientists" found nothing toxic in COREXIT, and that sick clean up worker must have just eaten something that gave them food poisoning! By the way, Great Britain refuses to allow Corexit to be used, because it is too toxic! So do many other countries. We are supposed to swallow that S*it and move on....nothing to see there..

Meanwhile, Jaques Coustou's grandson and other environmental researchers have proven that the dispersant is highly toxic and is causing huge underwater plumes that are killing countless fish and marine wildlife! This is a crime against humanity, as well as a crime against nature and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, including those involved in any other cover-up, such as the Republican deniers and even EPA, OSHA, Salazar and any other Obama Administration officials who participate in minimizing the truth about the extent of this catastrophe!

We should all be outraged and calling for their heads! I think BP's Tony should take a swim in the plumes he denies, and then he should be forced to work as a clean up worker with no protective gear for a few days. See if he has any respiratory problems

The U.S. government should be ordering BP to do whatever necessary to protect the Gulf of Mexico and the clean-up workers, BP's bottom line be damned.

As long as BP continues to do whatever it wants, ignoring the EPA and OSHA at will and with no adverse consequences, Obama's claim of being in charge rings very false.

It is past time for 'I'm in charge' Obama to order BP to stop putting toxic poison into the Gulf. And send the Navy to forcibly stop BP from injecting toxic dispersant, if that's the only way to stop it.

And, Obama should order BP to provide all needed protective wear to the clean-up workers. The President should not allow BP to ignore OSHA!!

Mr. President, WHERE ARE THE TANKERS???

BP has 24 tankers that are being used to make money for BP, not for clean-up duty. Obama MUST commandeer those tankers, put at least a dozen straws (pipes) into the known oil plumes, and pump the oil into tankers for delivery to the refineries.

Mr. President, PLEASE order BP to spend whatever money it takes to get another blow-out preventer on site, to re-start work on the second pressure relief well. A recent blow-out off the coast of Australia required five pressure relief wells to successfully shut it down.

STOP putting Toxic dispersant into the Gulf!!

Mobilize the tankers for oil clean-up and removal NOW.

Restart work on the second pressure relief well ASAP.

why dont they have tankers there to start sucking it up. In Saudi arabia they got 85% of a 700 million gall spill out of the water. What is wrongWhy isnt anyone demanding this? I truely do not get it.

Lookin’ for a leader
To bring our country home
Re-unite the red white and blue
Before it turns to stone
Lookin’ for somebody
Young enough to take it on
Clean up the corruption
And make the country strong
Walkin’ amoung our people
There’s someone who’s straight and strong
To lead us from desolation
And a broken world gone wrong
Someone walks amoung us
And I hope he hears the call
And maybe it’s a woman
Or a black man after all
Yeah maybe it’s Obama
But he thinks that he’s too young
Maybe it’s Colin Powell
To right what he’s done wrong
America has a leader
But he’s not in the house
He’s walkin’ here amoung us
And we’ve got to seek him out
Yeah we’ve got our election
But corruption has a chance
We got to have a clean win
To regain confidence
America is beautiful
But she has an ugly side
We’re lookin’ for a leader
In this country far and wide
We’re lookin’ for a leader
With the Great Spirit on his side
Someone walks among us
And I hope he hears the call
And maybe it’s a woman
Or a black man after all

No one thought this would work. Keep drilling those relief wells. Hoping it doesn't creep up the east coast.

Remember the American Petroleum Institute ads with the woman in the black business suit walking across a sparkling white floor, her heals clicking as she walks past giant 'oil' and 'natural gas' words?

Remember the wonderous underwater world of crystal clear water and happy fish swimming pat sub-sea wells?

Well, there all right here for your viewing enjoyment:

So....what is the REAL data on wind and solar? Can we get ourselves off of oil if we use wind and solar? Please tell me this is possible.

Algae fuel looks promising:

It IS possible... just not immediately. I could go on long and involved scientific discourses about it... but you can get a taste of "REAL data" by googling it... The info is out there... not only in a university class. You will need some scientific background to follow it through its "gory details" and rationally decide what is true, false, or vapour. All the emerging technology has pros and cons (just like oil), and it is a balancing act between expediency, cost, safety, efficiency and many factors ad nauseum... BUT.. it IS possible.

President Obama stop listening to BP! They don't give a crap about the well being of America! Lead us! Be our champion! Stop the poison dispersants! They are killing everything! I live on a barrier island far away from the spill and even here animals are dying in huge numbers because it has spread so far!

This is horrnendous news for The Planet, and don't be fooled in any respect - BP doesn't give a damn! All that advertising about how they cared about the environment in the last few years on tv has been shown to be pure public relations b.s. They are a criminal enterpirse - this is what corporate greed and neglignece in search of huge short term monetary profts does - destroys the planet - BP should be abolished - CNN reports they put on a fake clean-up show for Obama today and why didn't Obama go to the oil filled marshes today?

I got slapped around on this site earlier today for having the temerity to suggest that BP's assets should immediately be frozen. I'm not only still suggesting it, I'm urging that it be done. You are correct. BP is, in fact, a criminal enterprise, and they fully intend to tie this catastrophe up in the courts for years. Meanwhile, thousands of lives in the region are being destroyed. This is unacceptable. It's time for the President to drop the technocratic, professorial BS and LEAD! As Truman was rumored to have said, "It's time to put a few swift kicks in the right asses." Indeed.

Yes. Obama needs to freeze BP's assets and comandeer all the supertankers he can to suck up the oil when it all rises to the surface without dispursants spreading it everywhere underwater.

Response from the other two: "Oh well, it's just fish." The only one to blame here as I see it is BP.
01:02 AM on 05/29/2010
Just because BP "f---ked up" does not necessarily mean 'they don't give a damn'. They will learn something from this. I think WE (that means ALL of us) have something to learn from this.

Agreed... BP is at fault... POLLUTER PAYS.

No. Blame the American people themselves for the last 30 plus years who allowed the deregulation of EVERYTHING LOCK, STOCK, and BARREL: global financial markets, derivatives trading, the oil industry, endless undeclared wars for the MIC profit of a few. You name it. Everything is gamed by huge corporations. Anything goes and now it has. People get the government they deserve and we as a people got it. It is as simple as that. Keep reading the high school textbooks from the Texas School Book Depository and stay in the cracker motorcade to doom. Keep wearing the pink dresses, white gloves, and the pill box hats to total obliteration as a nation. That is where we are now. All you folks on the Gulf Coast face mind bending catastrophe as corporate mine canaries for the rest of the nation. It does not look good at all.
10:58 PM on 05/28/2010
But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!
