Obama Honors America's War Dead On Memorial Day With Speech At D.C. Air Base After Earlier Rainout In Illinois

Obama Memorial Day

DARLENE SUPERVILLE   05/31/10 09:06 PM ET   AP

ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. — President Barack Obama said Monday that the meaning of Memorial Day is found in the story of ordinary Americans who become extraordinary for one simple reason: love of country.

Obama, speaking to dozens of troops at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington after his Land of Lincoln tribute in Illinois was washed out by a storm, said the nation's fallen heroes had such a deep love of country that they willingly sacrificed their own lives to protect it.

"In this time of war, we pay special tribute to the thousands of Americans who have given their lives during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and who have earned their place among the greatest of generations," Obama said in the Monday evening speech.

Vice President Joe Biden earlier made the more traditional appearance at Arlington National Cemetery on Obama's behalf, saying the country has "a sacred obligation" to make sure its servicemen and women are the best equipped and best-supported troops in the world.

"As a nation, we pause to remember them," Biden said. "They gave their lives fulfilling their oath to this nation and to us."

Obama had readied a similar message of gratitude for his appearance at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill., and actually had taken the podium to give the address when the skies opened up with a downpour and thunder, lightning and high winds.

Under the cover of a large umbrella, Obama told thousands gathered that "a little bit of rain doesn't hurt anybody, but we don't want anybody being struck by lightning." He asked people to return to their cars for their safety, and he retreated briefly to an administration building on the cemetery's grounds. A few minutes later Obama boarded a pair of buses to greet military families that came for the event.

Before the storm hit, and in advance of his appearance at the podium, Obama had visited a section of headstones where two Marines awaited him. After laying a wreath, he bowed his head in a moment of silence, his hands tightly clasped. Then a lone bugler played taps.

After leaving the cemetery, Obama met privately with families of veterans and service members currently living at the Fisher House in Hines, Ill. It serves as a home away from home for family members whose loved ones are getting treatment at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Hines, which is about 12 miles west of downtown Chicago.

At Arlington, Biden carried out the traditional wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns under a brilliant sunshine.

The vice president, accompanied by Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the country's service members are "the heart and soul and, I would say, spine of this nation." He said taking part in the annual ceremony was "the greatest honor of my public life."

Obama's decision to appear in Illinois, rather than at the national burial grounds at Arlington, had been controversial, and some veterans groups criticized him for it, although he was not the first president to bypass the annual outing.

Paul Rieckhoff, founder and executive director of the group Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said Arlington is the focal point of the nation's and military's attention on Memorial Day. "When he's not here, it doesn't look like he's on the same page," Rieckhoff said.

Rieckhoff said U.S. service men and women need Obama to use the bully pulpit to remind people that the holiday is not about going to the beach or barbecuing.

"We appreciate that the vice president is going to be here, but it's not the same," Rieckhoff said.

Jay Agg, a spokesman for the veterans group AMVETS, said the annual ceremony at Arlington is "the ideal place for the president to observe Memorial Day. However, his choice to honor our fallen at another national cemetery as other presidents have done is entirely appropriate."

In an e-mail, Agg accused some people of using the day "as an opportunity to score cheap political points on the backs of our veterans and in doing so dishonor them and distract from the true meaning and purpose of Memorial Day."

I heard President Obama's speech... it was cold and robotic. It didnt seem like one word was written by him. And I'm not even a US citizen, so it's not like I'm a partial observer . His speech at last years Human Rights Convention annual dinner (oct 10) where he said homo-sexual relationships are "just as honourable as a relationship between a man and a woman" , thus equating procreation with sodomy, was much more passionate. You can see what type of issues matter more to this false leader. Fire burn the pope , fire burn the queen , fire burn all false leaders, those who love satan must fall ! JAH RASTAFARI

Interesting how the national media continued to say Obama was rained out and cut to the osprey story - few mentioning that he DID meet with the families. Seems to me that might have been more something to mention, since the national 'liberal' media continues to show him as being cold and unfeeling, which I am pretty sure these families didn't see when he took time to meet and thank them for their sacrifice.

There is a national cemetary here in Mississippi, on the coast. It is probably where my husband and I will both be buried. I would hope that the POTUS would visit other national cemetaries and speak the names of some of those who have been laid to rest outside of Washington.

Again, just another opportunity for opposers to complain.

Without hate, some people would have nothing. How sad for them.

It does not matter where the President honors our fallen Vets. The point is HE HONORS THEM. So many americans try on every hand to knock down this President regardless what he does. There are so many National Cemetaries in the USA, it does not matter which cemetary he goes to. Please America, I know some of you cannot get beyond the color of the President, but try.

People get outraged over just about anything these days. Wasn't there outrage over who did and who didn't wear the flag lapel pin a while back?

The media - ALL media - loves to stir it up.

But one has to feel bad for Obama over that brutal storm he ran into in Illinois. Bad luck, on top of everything else he's dealing with. And it was a beautiful day at Arlington.

People are criticizing the president for missing the wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery this Memorial Day — even though pres. Reagan, Bush and Bush also missed ceremonies — but they have conveniently forgotten that last year he did something George W. Bush never did. He visited the graves of soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan, as well as those whose lives were wasted in George Bush’s unnecessary and immoral invasion of Iraq.

I suspect anyone criticizing Obama on this gets all their "news" from Fox.

What the Fox Crowd fail to understand is that Fox is owned by outside entities that are working to d.estroy American from the inside. Fox is owned by the A ustralian, Rupert and members of the S audi R oyal Family.

It was the Republicans that changed the policy, which allowed foreigners to own majority states in American Media! Bad MOVE for America!

Yes , how dare anyone criticize the President. How dare anyone criticize the former President for allowing US to torture... or for his disgraceful response to Hurricane Katrina . And to think, some people saying Mr Obama has not stuck to his pre-election promise of bringing the troops home and ending the illegal occupation of Iraq.... so much 'fox news' propaganda ! infowars.com prisonplanet.tv

A segment of the population has been picking on and will continue to pick on the President for everything he does because even if what he does benefits them; we all know it is not about anything other than the color of his skin. I know a lot of people don’t want to come to the truth so I/we have to take the truth to them. Until America, the world for that matter face racism we will have this kind of thing going on. Just think if America had come together like we did in the past behind Presidents during war time and time of crisis how better off we would be!

True, true. I have said this oh so many times. Thank you, Thank you. America, America. Please stop this madness. So many Americans want America to fail. Unbelievable!
06:49 AM on 06/02/2010
Ok, so please enlighten me more. If a person of colour were to 'pick' on this President , and i know many such people , are they all self hating , racists? By your logic, Mr Obama's skin colour makes him immune to criticism.....

I don't see how people expect our President to be everything to everything! I mean really, he's human. I don't expect President Obama to do anything other than to honor Veterans today, doesn't matter if he's at the White House, on a ski slope, surfing, golfing or eating. I for one honor all those who served and are presently serving. Some seem to expect more than they give, besides the BBQ's and moaning over Obama what did you do for a veteran today? Visit a VFW or Veterans home? go to the grave of fallen veterans?

I'll be quitting Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America because of Paul Rieckhoff's stupid comments. The President is the President. it doesn't matter whether he speaks at Arlington, Lincoln National Cemetery, the White House, or anywhere else. he can be appropriately respectful from anywhere. Hell, George H.W. Bush NEVER went to Arlington on memorial Day during his presidency -- not once. Rickhoff ought to know better than to fall into this Republican "the Democrat party hates the military" B.S. trap.

Boy, do I agree with you! I've written to Paul Reickhoff asking for his position on DADT, and heard nary a peep. Where is IAVA's Voice for ALL Military folks?

President Obama has signed many pro-military and pro-veterans Bills - many championed by Rieckhoff - and this is the thanks he provides? This is his understanding of the way things work? He can give the President no credit or support?

Ptui. I'm with you, 1stRepublic14thStar. Mr Rieckhoff lost me with his stupidity here.

Funny how those that would never actually be able to be buried at Arlington or any other veteran's cemetery are the biggest complainers. Where was Dick Cheney and Lizard, you know, those superpatriots?

I generally agree with a lot Rieckhoff says ... however ... it is not like President Obama did nothing today .... He honored the Armed Services and visited with the families ...He has worked his buns off since he took office - taking a lot to clean up the mess left by the great brush clearer of Crawford plus all the lovely new issues that have been added.

First, don't be fooled by the establishment's false left - right paradigm ... democrat or republican has nothing to do with it, neither does conservative liberal. Some people are just blind followers of what they are lead to believe. The truth is , the same puppet masters are behind both sides.... look at the CFR , Trilateral Commission , Bilderberg Group , they're involved on both sides. What is the difference between Obama and Bush... apart from their appearance? Oh , Mr Obama loves gays more openly..... thats about it im sorry to say , as far as policy and politics goes
