Immigration

Mother Jones:

When some of the nation's top evangelical leaders threw their weight behind immigration reform, liberal advocates were pleased to receive help from an unexpected ally. But immigration foes saw it as nothing less than treachery.

Put your Bible where your mouth is. Or walk your Bible. Or .....just go with the theme.

The Right Wing insists on inserting the Bible into everything - unless - it's something the Bible doesn't agree with them on and then they want to talk about the Constitution - unless - the Constitution doesn't say what they want and so then they want to talk about rewriting the Constitution - unless -  Read More...

"We shouldn't be confusing theology with policy."
I bought the book, and read the book. You don’t seriously expect me to live by it as well, do you?

If the economy wasn’t in tatters, would immigration be quite the issue it is? Going after the architects of that collapse might make more sense, than persecuting some of the suffers.

Economic hardship is especially dangerous time for scapegoating, and Latin@s are the hate group du jour. Angry mobs want simple answers to complex difficult issues, that has fueled revolutions in hundreds of countries.

The 'angry mobs' are the advocates for the illegal aliens or aren't you paying attention? Sheesh. Arizona calmly passed a law and all heck broke loose with protests, rallies, boycotts and what-have-you on your side of the argument. How can you be so blind?

No. The law says they have to have done something like a traffic violation or be involved in some other crime before the 'reasonable suspicion' kicks in to determine status.

Why is that so hard for you to get? You copy and paste all these 'lawyeresse' comments but miss the obvious.
==============================\

No it does not, “reasonable suspicion," meaning a person who is standing in front on hi/her home may be asked to prove legal status,,,, read the law.

And what would the 'reasonable suspicion' be if someone is standing in front of his/her home? Race cannot be used according to the law. I think you're imagining things to argue against the law and they don't make sense.

"The federal government needs to step up to the plate. If not, it’s going to rend the fabric of our society," Land said in a conference call last month organized by Conservatives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. More strikingly, Land slammed anti-immigration foes on the right in harsh terms, suggesting they were misguided and even ignorant for opposing a pathway to legalization. "It doesn’t help when you have parts of the conservative coalition that insists on mislabeling a pathway as ‘amnesty,’” he said. "They need a course in remedial English themselves."

There is the biggest problem which arises every time immigration reform is attempted. Mislabeling or outright knowingly lying. Bush wanted the pathway to citizenship and the far right conservatives would not have it. They wanted a fence. That isn't really reform.

I don't care about people who don't care about our laws and even less about those who defend those who break our laws.

The more the liberals scream 'racist' and 'racial profiling' and we're all illegal immigrants and the other nonsense, the less support they are attracting to their side. Arizona and the country support this law. 50% of Californians support this law. More states are looking into similar laws and if this one is held constitutional, look out. There will be a flood of states enacting the same laws while the opponent's heads will explode cause they didn't 'get their way'.

I seriously doubt one other state will follow AZ with this draconian racist law. Not after the Catholic Church, Evangelical leaders, Karl Rove, Jeb Bush, Rick Perry and even bigotted Huckabee and TANCREDO have denounced it. they also see a growing list of cities joining boycotts of AZ, and AZ tourism losing MILLIONS.

The GOP will whither and die in any state with a 10% population of Latin@s, who will hit the voting booths in November with a VENGENCE that no silly tea-klanner sect comes close to matching in such FURY.

Do you know your own history? Who was the first relative of yours in this country and how did they get here?

I am not trying being rude in asking I just wonder if people forget that this country was built on welcoming immigrants and immigrants built this country yet we make it so difficult to become legal. It is a huge process and takes a very long time. So many stay here after visas and such run out because they did everything they were told to do to become a citizen and still wait.

I am not for illegal immigration. I am for a fair and clear way to become a citizen.

I never see any (Mass Protest in Mexico) about not providing it's people basic human services and decency so they don't have to leave their home country.

If Mexico would ask for help...there is lot's of land & resources in Mexico, give every family 40 acres and a mule, raise enough food to feed your brood. *Clean up the corupution, send some drones to get rid of the Drug Cartel.

*The problem will never stop until Mexico gets fixed, and stop thinking that America is it's welfare assitance & it's Dept of labor system.

Let's organize a hugh march on Mexico.....

It does seem as if there is little being done on the demand side of the issue. As I read the article and considered an open borders policy, I concluded that is not the answer either. I love the irony of the suggestion of forty acres and a mule as a solution coming from an American.

If they're disenchanted with the repubs, the evangelicals will stay home on voting day rather than vote for a Dem. The Dems are generally pro-choice and pro gay. This won't be a one issue vote for them.

Any local police officer in the country may inquire of a resident's immigration status, except in AZ. The new AZ law has established hurdles for the police.

First the police must make a legal stop. Second the police must arrest or detain a resident for a non immigrant related offense. Then if the resident lacks a valid ID, such as a driver's license, may the AZ police inquire about one's immigration status. This should "rule out" any racial profiling.

Only undocumented residents, detained or arrested, with probable cause, may be reported to ICE. The federal govt. will make the decision regarding the immigration status of these undocumented residents. Those with warrants may be held. The others may simply be released. Under "normal" circumstances the process tales less than four hours.

It's because of illegals that things have gotten this far.

How many police in AZ are Hispanic? If you get pulled over by police who are Hispanic is it still racial profiling?
12:24 AM on 06/02/2010
Given the reaction of the latino electorate during the last immigration reform debate ('06-'07) the GOP would be wise to run away from the issue.

The extremes of their party will almost certainly make the same mistake that they did last time, i.e., overreact and turn sharply xenophobic.

The Arizona is the a brier patch the Democrats are BEGGING the GOP not to throw them in.

" Mexico's Arizona-style law requires local police to check IDs. And Mexican police freely engage in racial profiling and routinely harass Central American migrants, say immigration activists.

"The Mexican government should probably clean up its own house before looking at someone else's," said Melissa Vertíz, spokeswoman for the Fray Matías de Córdova Human Rights Center in Tapachula, Mexico.

In one six-month period from September 2008 through February 2009, at least 9,758 migrants were kidnapped and held for ransom in Mexico — 91 of them with the direct participation of Mexican police, a report by the National Human Rights Commission said. Other migrants are routinely stopped and shaken down for bribes, it said.

A separate survey conducted during one month in 2008 at 10 migrant shelters showed Mexican authorities were behind migrant attacks in 35 of 240 cases, or 15%.

The problems I see in all of the religions can be boiled down to two biggies... one, there seems to be nothing supernatural going on here. There are no demons. No ghosts or angels. No real miracles EVER happen. Those televangelists don't ever really HEAL! anyone.

Second problemo is that believers, and that is all believers, don't seem any happier, nicer, cooler, than non-believers. Buddhists vs Hindu? Scientologists vs Catholics? Muslims vs Mormans? Christian Scientists vs Orthodox Jews? There are no winners here.

Maybe evangelicals coming to the defense of Mexicans and the poor is a sign of the Apocalypse. My fondest dream is that religion will once again become a haven for good and decent people instead of the radical h@ters that now comprise the christian havens.

12 I fast wtice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
