Time:

When it first became law in 1993, "Don't ask, don't tell" was a congressional slap at the Clinton Administration's impertinent attempt to allow openly gay men and women to serve in uniform before lawmakers -- or for that matter the armed forces -- were ready for such a change. That was nearly a generation ago, however, and with public opinion shifting, "Don't ask, don't tell" has become a political football once again. In recent days Congressional Democrats -- fearful that anticipated losses in November elections could scotch President Obama's pledge to overturn the policy -- have launched a pre-emptive strike to end the ban before the Pentagon has given the idea a formal green light.

Congress never misses an opportunity to foul something up. This "test" will only give the opposition time to mobilize.

Who cares? There are also Americans who every day deny the Holocaust and urge a return to a white supremacist-based society. Do we coddle them by writing articles in which they are given a platform for justifying their hatred and to encourage oppression of a minority class? No, so why she would do it for those who are against repealing DADT?

Only in America is a cheer sent up by many when rights are denied to some of its citizens.

castle: The die was cast when America put up with legal slavery of humans, followed by an institutional racism with "Jim Crow" life in the South -- and many places elsewhere in our country. If you can buy that argument, which was also supported by the "Christians" (race of Ham and all that), it's no problem to discriminate against gays, whom Christian Identity says should be murdered. Establish a taste for white supremacy and rightwing evangelical Christianity is never far behind, pandering to the politics..

I think that's the only "cheer" left in America, sometimes.
