Maytag Dishwasher Recall 2010: Huge Recall Of 1.7 Million Dishwashers

Maytag Recall

06/ 3/10 09:12 AM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — Whirlpool Corp.'s Maytag unit is recalling about 1.7 million dishwashers because of a fire hazard.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall Thursday, says the company, part of Whirlpool Corp., has received 12 reports of electrical failures in the dishwasher heating element that led to fires and damage.

One kitchen fire caused extensive damage, the agency said. No injuries have been reported.

The recall includes Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand dishwashers with plastic tubs. The recalled dishwashers were made with black, bisque, white, silver and stainless steel front panels and sold at department and appliance stores nationwide from February 2006 through April 2010. They cost between $250 and $900.

CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using the recalled dishwashers and disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it.

Consumers can schedule a free in-home repair or receive a rebate of $150 or $250 toward the purchase of select new Maytag dishwashers. The amount of the rebate depends on the type of model to be purchased.

A company spokeswoman says Whirlpool set aside $75 million to cover the costs of the recall.

More information on the numerous serial numbers involved in the recall can be found at the company's website or the website for the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall is Maytag's second of more than a million major appliances in a little more than a year. It recalled 1.6 million refrigerators because of fire risks in March 2009.

Whirlpool, based in Benton Harbor, Mich., bought Maytag in March 2006 in a $1.8 billion deal.

I had one of those maytag dishwasher fires in April. They are no joke. Check out your Dishwasher and see if it is recalled. There are 2 recalls, one from 2007 dealing with 1998-2001 models and the 2010 recall dealing with 2006-2010 models. Our fire was under the 2007 recall and we never had notification of the recall until the dishwasher was flaming in the house. The fire caused extensive damage gutting out my kitchen and causing smoke and water damage everywhere else. As I am writing this I am sitting in a rental due to not being able to occupy my home until repairs are made. Please check your appliances.

Once again, a company that has bought up great smaller companies is running the brand name into the ground. So now you pay through the nose for a Maytag or Jenn-air product that is actually a Whirlpool. These two companies were know for their quality for years prior to being bought out. Profits before anything else is the mantra of US corporations, even if it costs them customers.

These ads have always clashed with the facts. Consumers Report consistently rates Maytag as one of the least dependable. Or more correctly, one of the most repaired.

I think these types of recalls are a consumer ripoff, "a rebate of $150 or $250 toward the purchase of select new Maytag dishwashers"? I had already replaced my defective maytag with a kenmore, so what good does this kind of recall do? I have no desire, or extra cash to run out and buy another maytag dishwasher

Their competitor had this to say...

Okay, that was 30 years ago and these days said competitor isn't any better but it's all good...

Interesting - that link was working a few days ago and has now disappeared.

Here is another on NPR that is still working. And I apologize for the "typo," it
was supposed to read airline corporations were doing this - not airline corporation. (sic)

So dishwashers are the least of our concerns - although a house burning down
is no picnic.

The deregulation of airline maintenance was due to both lobbyists convincing
Congress in order to cut their costs, and NAFTA.

Interesting - the link worked a few days ago. I'll see if I can find it somewhere else.
And BTW, my typo said "corporation," it was supposed to be airline corporations.
So dishwashers are the least of our troubles.
It is all due to a combination of corporations lobbying congress to deregulate safety controls,
and NAFTA...

Did you all know that airline corporation are now flying our commercial airplanes down to 3rd world countries to do the maintenance because it is cheaper? And in some cases the FAA has virtually no tracking of the mechanics doing the work. Mechanics in these countries no longer have to be FAA certified;

That publication date almost ensured no one would see it.

So - hold on to your seats and pray the airplane holds together in the sky.

That advert is completely on the ball. Since then all the balls were dropped, but anything can happen in a 30 year time period...

We stopped buying Maytag when they fired thousands of workers and shipped their jobs to Mexico.

Guess the money they saved on hiring Mexicans can be used to pay for the recall and the houses that burned down.

Whirlpool and their energy star products sucks. Don't waste your money or time purchasing these products. I had to replace my refrigerator that lasted 5 1/2 years. Six months out of warranty that sucked. Now, my dishwasher is on the recall list. The price that I paid wasn't cheap but I got cheap made products for top dollar. Not happy and very disappointed in how Whirlpool handed the situation. It's sad that somebody's kitchen had to get burn because of their lack of the ability in taking responsibility of their products. I am very Thankful that the refrigerator and dishwasher didn't catch on fire in my home.

Maytag quality had been going down for years prior to its acquisition by Whirlpool. The acquisition is just another example of big corporate oligopolies eliminating competition and putting out products under different names to give you the impression that you have real choices.
http://www.oligopolywatch.com/2005/08/14.html

"Oh well, I guess growing up in the US Maytag meant quality. Since buying a Maytag refrigerator in 2001 we have had (i) replace broken compressor & fan in August 2004 - under warranty however the house call (we live in the country) was $100 and the labor was another $100! Now in early March 2006 we are about to go through the same process.

We strongly recommend to anyone who is thinking of buying Maytag - you are thinking about the "old Maytag" - the new Maytag features low quality, low service, high prices."
