Bret Michaels Tour

LOS ANGELES — No groupies. No after-parties. No stage diving.

These aren't typical doctor's orders, but bandana-clad Poison frontman Bret Michaels is no average patient. Despite suffering several medical maladies over the past two months, the "Celebrity Apprentice" champion is moving forward with his tour, album and a new VH1 reality series that promises to show the rocker in a new light.

"I think this is good for my soul," Michaels said in a phone interview Thursday from his latest concert stop in Minneapolis. "Honestly, I'm taking every precaution. I'm not doing anything stupid. I'm going on stage and telling the fans that I'm going to give 100 percent of everything I've got, but if it's only 75 or 80 percent, I think they will understand."

Michaels underwent an emergency appendectomy in April and was expected to make a full recovery. Days later, he was rushed to the hospital after complaining of a headache and was found to have had a brain hemorrhage. While recovering from the hemorrhage in May, he suffered a warning stroke and was diagnosed with a hole in the heart.

"I don't want my legacy to be that I had a brain hemorrhage," said Michaels. "I want it to be that I rocked, I treated people with respect and I made a lot of good friends along the way. I think that came back to me when I got sick. I truly believe if you're a good person, and you spread love, then that love will come back to you."

After winning the third season of Donald Trump's NBC reality competition "The Celebrity Apprentice" in May, Michaels surprised "American Idol" viewers when he joined finalist Casey James on "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" on the Fox singing contest's ninth season finale. A week later, he resumed his "Custom Built" tour in Biloxi, Miss.

Michaels said his doctors weren't crazy that he returned to the scene so early, but he's following their directions on the road to recovery, including taking it easy on and off stage, exercising to increase mobility, laying off the liquor and taking blood thinners to prepare for a fall surgery to repair the hole in his heart.

"At the moment, I can't throw-down like I would like to," said Michaels.

Dr. Neil Martin, chair of the neurosurgery department at the University of California, Los Angeles, is not alarmed by Michaels' snappy return to performing so soon after suffering his hemorrhage. Martin said the chances of another hemorrhage occurring are low and the procedure to mend Michaels' hole in his heart won't be complicated.

"I think as long he monitors himself for any symptoms, and as long as his doctors have given him the green light to go back to work, I think he should be OK," said Martin. "If he was involved in something like contact sports – mixed martial arts, hockey, football, boxing – I'd tell him to find a new line of work."

Production on Michaels' new VH1 docu-reality show, "Life As I Know It," was halted when he was hospitalized. Unlike his tawdry VH1 dating series "Rock of Love," this one will focus on Michaels' relationship with his daughters, Raine and Jorja, and their mother, Kristi Lynn Gibson, Michaels' on-again-off-again girlfriend.

The pilot episode featuring candid footage of Michaels before his health scares aired Monday, and new installments in production now are scheduled for the fall. VH1 executive vice president Jeff Olde promised "Life As I Know It" wouldn't turn into a medical show, but viewers should expect to see a different side of Michaels.

"I've never heard him sound better and happier," said Olde. "I think he's genuinely happy to be alive and happy for all the things he has in his life, but he's really always been that way. Bret is not a different person now than before his health issues. I think maybe his priorities have shifted, but they were already shifting."

Forget Brett Michaels! This rock prodigy is phenomenal and he already plays in his dad's rock band as the drummer. So tiny he can hardly see over his drumset, he is only three years old but man can he deliver that beat!

See him rock out on this video, as he drums along to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Hate Myself For Loving You! A star is born!

Hey, the man knows his limitations. He knows Obamacare will be a disaster, so might as well live it up now.

Wow. Mother Theresa, you are fired. Michaels, you are hired as the new Saint of Self-sacrifice.

Something about the guy annoys the heII out of me, bandana and all, but he does seem like decent sort of fellow and for sure there are a lot worse. He can do as he pleases, it doesn't really matter one way or another from my perspective.

How can this man who supposedly just had a brain hemorrhage AND suffered a stroke due to a hole in his heart be able to suddenly jump around on stage. With or without groupies, this is starting to look a little funky to me.
06:43 PM on 06/05/2010
His stroke was a TMI. It's very light and passing. My father would have them sometimes. LIke losing vision for a little bit and then it comes right back or your head gets real fuzzy. It can be a precursor to a regular stroke.

Re his brain hemorrhage, that's not fishy. His neurologists released info about it. He can't make that stuff up.

It never ceases to amaze me what a person will do to get attention. Bret Michaels has been entertaining for over 2 decades, and you would think that he would not have to resort to paying people to back up his fake illnesses. It's one thing to reinvent yourself, it's another to play on peoples heartstrings to boost your career. Those believing this man is ill, you are right, he has a mental illness and he's a total ego maniac. There is a book out by "A Shot of Poison" by Christopher Long the author is some no namer, but it says how Bret is "always armed with an arsenal of well-rehearsed and very print-friendly quotes, he's the master of self promotion, and never fails to give a calculated interview." Well, I would say, this would have to say, his latest shenanigans have to be the most calculated yet. I think he should run for government, he definitely fits in with the rest of the disingenuous media whores.

You are a truly troubled individual. You know not of what you speak yet you ramble on as though you do.
You may or may not like Bret M. but to make such accusations without first hand knowledge would be somewhat unethical, the thing you accuse Bret M of. Interesting.
There is an arrogance here that is hiding your insecurities. Unfortunately you aren't smart enough to notice.

No groupies, what's the point Bret?

For now no groupies. That will come, so to speak.

Entertainers can become addicted to the rush of performing and the applause of the fans. Since Mr. Michaels is a musician, playing music is part of his life. Even if he didn't tour, he would still be playing solo or to small crowds. Heck, the Guess Who is still touring, and the Who play a concert from time to time. Some old rockers do not burn out and fade away to quote Neil Young, they simply keep on going like the energizer bunny. Sometimes you can catch a band like Blue Oyster Cult in a bar. Some older bands like Iron Maiden keep getting bigger as time goes on, as fans kids get into the music and attend Maiden concerts with their parents.

"At the moment, I can't throw-down like I would like to." He's such a legend. A regular Gary Glitter he is. LOL

Didn't he used to "rock" wearing a ton of cosmetics? Does he even get airplay? I don't think he ever "rocked!" I wasn't a 14 year old white girl when the glam rock thing was happening, so I can honestly say that I am not a fan.
03:59 PM on 06/04/2010
I never would have thought that I would say this. But Bret you are so awesome. Take care of yourself, we want you rockin for many years to come.
03:07 PM on 06/04/2010
I don't believe this guy had a brain hemorrhage. I think it was all for show so he could win Celebrity Apprentice.
03:51 PM on 06/04/2010
You might want to stay away from microwaves, why with your hat and all.

(I don't especially like or dislike Michaels, or his music, or his show(s), but you people are crazy.)
05:00 PM on 06/04/2010
ok so were crazy...first on Apprentice his daughter has a "diabetes" scare, with Brett crying and upset...but then it was nothing...then he is on his "death bed" with a brain hemorrage, but is back at it within the week, then he has a stroke, and has a hole in his heart...but within a week, but he is not only fine he finishes and wins Apprentice.....then "against" his doctors orders he performs on Idol, a show he is puportedly in the running for as Simons replacement...come on and were crazy, people that keep supporting this one hit wonder are the real fools..

Dyskresiac, you're crazy falling for it. Bret's medical emergencies, his daughter coming on the set, including her medical emergencey, and Bret's tears was the biggest scam so he could win. In reality, Holly Robinson-Peete should have been the 2010 winner of Celebrity Apprentice. Everyone fell for Bret's theatrics. If you would have watched and paid close attention, Donald Trump was also for Peete to be the winner. She raised the most money since The Apprentice started. Mr. Trump was probably pressured into giving the 2010 Celebrity Apprentice to Bret. What about the additional money that was donated to both foundations? Snapple didn't want to look bad because they knew Peete should have been the 2010 winner. The additional money was a total guilt. The season is over, but Dyskresiac you're either blind or stupid.

this is all going to back-fire on Brett as he has loat a legion of supporters by all these to "coincidental " events happening at one time..and even if they are legit...it makes it more sickening as what about his kids??...it just shows it's all about Brett...i wish people would have the cajones' and just not show up to the his shows...in poker terms he has over-played his hand...
05:38 AM on 06/05/2010
I agree with you doburt..he has definitely overplayed his hand! You can't keep playing the the public, and bouncing back, playing the public and bouncing back, then do another reality show, and then do another reality show, and keep winning, and keep winning, and not suffer some kind of consequence, and on the back of all these health problems keep announcing new albums, new shows, and new promotions like American Idol and becoming a judge. It all looks like a sham and you are doing it for attention! If you look at my post you will see that I posted a book I just read about his years of touring with his band Poison, you should really read the book, it really shows him in a whole other light than this guy who everyone thinks he is now, because this guy is a fake jack ass! I really feel for his daughters, as they grow up, they are going to realize their daddy is a selfish pig that didn't care about them, other than to use them to promote himself. You really should check out "A Shot of Poison."
