Michelle Obama Brings Top Chefs To White House For School Lunch Campaign (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON — School lunches that are good for kids – and that kids will actually eat? That's a job for America's top chefs.

First lady Michelle Obama recruited hundreds of chefs gathered on the South Lawn of the White House Friday to join her anti-obesity campaign and help schools serve healthier, tastier meals.

Mrs. Obama is asking the chefs to partner with individual schools and work with teachers and parents to help educate kids about food and nutrition. She said healthy meals at schools are more important than ever because many children get most of their calories there.

WATCH:

"You can make a salad bar fun – now that's something," she said.

Rachael Ray, Tom Colicchio, Cat Cora and other celebrity chefs joined Mrs. Obama and children from a local school. They picked arugula, baby spinach, rhubarb and other vegetables from her garden on the lawn and showed the children how to wash, dice and cook the veggies as they all made a grilled chicken salad and rhubarb strawberry crisp together.

In addition to helping in school kitchens, Mrs. Obama encouraged the chefs to do cooking demonstrations, form cooking clubs, integrate food into lesson plans and help children plant vegetables in school gardens.

She also said they'll have to be patient, learning about the communities and understanding the schools.

That advice could have been with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in mind. British chef Oliver, who did not attend the event, recently turned his own effort to transform the unhealthy diet of school children in a West Virginia town into a hit reality television program. Many in the town were resistant to the effort, including some who worked in the school cafeterias.

"They're going to need your support, but it's got to be a collaboration," she said. "And we strongly encourage you all to go in with that spirit."

Chef Todd Gray of the Washington restaurant Equinox spoke about his recent experience partnering with a local school. As part of his project, students planted corn, squash and beans to learn about ancient civilizations, learned about decomposition by making real compost – worms and all – and sketched the school garden in art class.

"It will change your life professionally and personally," he told the other chefs.

Mrs. Obama also used the event to encourage Congress to pass a school nutrition bill. Legislation that passed a Senate committee earlier this year would ask the Agriculture Department to create new standards for all foods in schools, including vending machine items, to give students healthier meal options. It would also expand the number of low-income children eligible for free or reduced cost meals.

"Everyone out there needs to focus on this," Mrs. Obama said. "This is doable. It's right there. But we've got to make it happen."

Other well-known chefs participating in the event included Jose Andres and Marcus Samuelsson. Samuelsson helped prepare the Obamas' first state dinner in November in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

It is so important children learn about nutrition when they are young and are given healthy food. If we don't change school lunches to be more nutritional we are jeopardizing our children's futures!

I have helped children build school gardens and showed them vegetables they have never seen before http://plantingprogress.org/ and it is amazing.

Teach children about nutrition, show them where vegetables come from and they will grow to live healthy, prosperous lives!

For all the HFCS=fat conspiracy theorists (you realize most of the rest of the world uses little to no HFCS, it's all sugar) :

More than one third of European children are obese or overweight, according to the latest report from research organisation Datamonitor.

The report, Kids Nutrition: New Perspectives and Opportunities, attributes the problem to rising prosperity.

“With prosperity increasing globally, there has been an increased propensity for kids to over indulge, leading to the numbers of overweight children rising alarmingly,” write the report’s authors.

Although Europe and the Americas are identified as exhibiting the world’s high levels of childhood obesity, other regions are also showing alarming increases. “While kids' obesity levels are less severe in Asia Pacific and the MEA (Middle Eastern and African countries), levels in these countries are growing year on year.”

We're eating too much. (and exercising too little) And what we're eating are empty calories.

Wonderful, have no idea how I missed this!
Maybe we can do something about the appalling food at hospitals too!
Just TRY to get a heart healthy meal at most of them! ACK

I was in a hospital due to suspected heart attack. For dinner I got a greasy spaghetti bolognese, with beef.

Yes, we went in for a standard treadmill test for hubby and he was rushed to surgery for a stent due to the 'widow maker' being 98% blocked.
I was freaked but putting on a great front.
When he was out of surgery and doing well, I exhausted, went to the hospital cafeteria starving and could NOT find a heart healthy alternative.
Greasy burritos.
Greasy burgers
NACHOS! (for goodness sake!)
Cheesy broccoli soup....
etc etc etc

oh forgot...hubby got beef stew with white bread and butter the next day from the hospital!
Something just doesn't connect in these stories...

My concern is that this initiative will not get off the ground due to state and local budget cuts. I was a substitute teacher a few years ago and I had the unfortunate experience of eating the cafeteria food once because I forgot my lunch. Food that horrible has to be incredibly cheap. Fresh fruits and vegetables are expensive compared to highly processed foodstuff bought in bulk. Also, I noticed that the children did not eat the healthier options that were served along with the crappy meal (fruit and milk).

I usually get bored pretty easily, but I watched the entire video with a warm fuzzy. I appreciate Michelle keeping the topic of eating healthy foods on the front burner, but also, when I was a kid I was privileged to go on some pretty amazing field trips that changed my life for the better (the ballet, art museums, DC and so much more). I'm certain that this outing with the kids (and the chefs) really did make a difference in their lives. Good job Michelle! As a mom, you know that early exposure to arts and sciences is key to making a life long impression.

I watch kids throw away so much food every day. They will throw this away too. And the school systems still purchase it. I say get rid of hot lunches, let the parents make the kids lunches and give the parents a tax break if they can make it a healthy sack lunch. but then that still does not insure that kids eat it.

Until schools ban letting them bring junk food in the building can you even start making a difference.

While I believe Michelle's intentions are genuine I find it a little hypocritical to say kids or anyone should eat healthier while her husband hires a Monsanto bigwig to head the USDA, does nothing to make the FDA more honest, is trying to appoint a Monsanto friendly justice to the SCOTUS in Kagan. Michelle needs to convince her husband to stop the poisoning of our food supply by allowing genetically engineered seeds/foods, pesticide poisoned produce, corn/grain, antibiotic and hormone poisoned meat, poultry and fish and HFCS in everything. Why is it that most other countries have banned most of the things that are running though our food supply like wildfire? Agribusiness is as alive and well under Obama as it was under Reagan – W. The regulations that were ended and the ending of enforcing what few regulations regarding our food supply are as absent under Obama as they have been for the last 30 years. Obama, like the others, will not even allow Americans to know if what they are eating is genetically engineered by allowing a label on it. Citizens of every other country that allows genetically engineered food into their country at least get to have a label and a choice. In America choose to eat a non organic/pastured, salad (no dressing), a peach and a plain grilled chicken breast and you are still eating poison with most of the nutrition zapped from it.

Again, the urge to fan you...but i already have! Please keep up the good word. People seem to have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. Thank you.
01:08 AM on 06/06/2010
You're very welcome TaurusRose. Thank you. There is no way to really eat healthy in America unless you can grow your own produce, wheat, raise your own animals and such unless you are wealthy and can afford to pay for pastured animals/eggs and organic everything else. Even then, so many big companies now own what were once small independent organic companies that who knows what we're really getting. For instance Horizon is a horrible company. They keep their cows in huge feedlots by the thousands and their cows are fed the same unhealthy and unnatural diet only it's organic corn killing their cows. Those animals still live tortured lives. On top of that Horizon has been trying like crazy to get the standards for what is considered organic lower. They make it very difficult for small farms to do it right. They want to put them out of business. Organic Valley is okay but if you can, stay away from any Horizon Dairy. I've also heard bad things about Walmart and Costco's so called organic dairy. I had such high hopes on Election Day 2008 and they were dashed within days. I'll bet you the first family doesn't go near the kinds of Monsanto created Frankenfoods that Obama keeps the rest of us poor slobs eating. The talk about wanting Americans to eat better is just that talk. Like with everything else there is no action behind it, like stopping the poisoning of our food supply by greedy companies.

Haven't you heard, Frankenfood is a myth.

No, what I've LEARNED is that Frankenfood being a myth is a myth.

I love that she is helping to bring this issue to national attention. This initiative is long overdue. Maybe we won't need to pay so much in health care costs if kids eat better. Some children eat all 3 meals per day at school! One of my greatest middle school memories is the lunches that were created from a school garden during the year my family lived in England. I remember the food more than any other part of the schooling experience.
11:58 AM on 06/05/2010
It's excellent to start teaching children how to eat better the sooner the better. Learning how to combine foods that cover all the major groups in a hurry is vital such as what Rachel Ray does in her 30 minute shows. The unfortunate part is that most high quality meals cost a lot of money and the cheaper ones take a lot of time to prepare. Getting people off of fast food takes a while as they've become addicted to the tastes in McDonalds etc.

"Food is at the core of what makes life wonderful!" As the mother of a Certified Chef, I surely agree. Glad to see the FLOTUS (and POTUS) encouraging, supporting, and utilizing chefs and nutritional experts to help all of us make our kids' lives better..healthier. I appreciate NY Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's support on this issue as well.

Recipe for Success Foundation was there in spades with a dozen people from Houston, including Top Chef Master star, Chef Monica Pope, Chefs Randy Evans, Peter Garcia, Michael Kramer, Barbara McKnight and Kiran Velma. We launched Recipe for Success in 2005 to combat childhood obesity by changing the way children eat. Since then, we have worked with over 12,000 children and become the largest program of our kind in the country. My deepest gratitude to Monica for stepping up 6 years ago to help me start Recipe for Success Foundation. Not only did she gather Houston's finest chefs to join our Chefs in Schools™ initiative, she has given her time to teach monthly cooking classes to fourth graders for four years running--never missed a class even during the middle of filming Top Chef Masters. Monica is and always will be the Top Chef of our heart. Recipe for Success delivers our own designed and tested Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ to 3050 elementary students every single month during the school day. Now, thanks to First Lady Michelle Obama, chefs across the country are inspired to engage in nutrition education in schools. We have a tested, tried and true framework, ready to support them See www.recipe4success.org and Let's Move! Gracie Cavnar, Founder-Recipe for Success Foundation.

Just tasted Heinz new ketchup without high frutctose corn syrup. They use sugar; it is the 4th ingredient instead of high fructose which is first I think on the 'regular' ketchup.
This is considered an alternate I guess. IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER!
It tastes like KETCHUP used to taste, yummy. A big difference.
