Republicans Push Again For DOJ Investigation Of White House Deals

WASHINGTON — Rebuffed before, Republicans are renewing demands for a Justice Department investigation into White House dealmaking in two Senate races. The Obama administration says it's broken no laws, but Republicans aren't taking its word.

The GOP national chairman, Michael Steele, used his party's weekly radio and Internet address to keep the political heat on the Democratic White House by urging appointment of a special investigator or independent counsel "who can sort out the facts."

The White House has acknowledged discussing possible jobs with senatorial candidates Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania and Andrew Romanoff in Colorado – both of whom declined to step aside from challenging White-House backed incumbents. White House defenders have argued that it's sometimes necessary to avoid messy primary fights.

Attorney General Eric Holder rejected requests from Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee and from California Rep. Darrell Issa, the top Republican on the House oversight committee, into the first case that came into the news: Rep. Sestak's claim that he was offered an administration job if he would drop his primary challenge against Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter.

The White House has acknowledged it turned to former President Bill Clinton to urge Sestak to stay in the House and accept an unpaid presidential advisory post rather than challenge Specter, a Republican-turned-Democrat. Sestak declined, and went on to beat Specter in the May 18 primary.

And this week, the White House disclosed that it had contacted Andrew Romanoff, a former Colorado House speaker, about possible administration jobs in hopes that he would not challenge Sen. Michael Bennet in the Aug. 10 Senate primary. Both the White House and Romanoff said there was no job offer, and Romanoff remains in the race.

"From day one of this current flap involving Congressman Joe Sestak and now Andrew Romanoff, the White House efforts to deny, obfuscate, and mislead have only served to raise suspicions even further," Steele said.

Steele wants "an impartial referee" to get to the bottom of what the White House offered, who authorized it, who knew about it and "what was the expected trade-off for accepting the offer?"

He said President Barack Obama's dealmaking falls far short of his promise to run the most open administration in history.

This just steams me! If the DOJ is going to investigate anything, they need to be investigating the Bush/Cheney administration and putting them behind bars for the war crimes and their mismanagement of our country! They pulled off the greatest heist of the American taxpayer dollars, and have systematically redistributed $$$$$$ to the bankers, oils companies and wealthiest 5% of the country!

Glad to hear the Party of Corporate Welfare is finally going to listen to the Democrats and investigate the Bush/Cheney back room energy policy deals. I hope they move quickly. We want our country back, eh boys and girls?

I demand investigations into the Bush Administration for corruption of the Justice Department, lying to get us into a war, and crimes against humanity.

Steele, we'd like to see this same quid pro quo investigation extended to the "selection" of George W. Bush as the President in 2000.

The Rethugs understand one thing very well, and that is if you are pointing your finger at someone, people will look in that direction. And if they're looking in the other direction, they can't see what YOU'RE doing.

You can be sure that they don't want you to see THAT...

This is the HYPOCRITE HOUR. They ...of all people.....wants an investigation into whether or not the White House did something wrong by offering Sestak a prestigious title without pay. YET>...they have not a clue whether or not water-boarding is torture and illegal, or is firing others of different political views is ethical when they are suppose to be in the DOJ and operates as an independent branch of the government, OR if Haliburton designated as the only monopoly in the Iraq oil saga and by the way....has ties with the then VP Cheney, they can not figure out whether or not something went afoul when a war was preempted on knowingly bad intelligence but they want Obama to be investigated NOW...without delay.

AGAIN...LET ME REPEAT MYSELF. We will consent to an investigation AS long as war crimes investigation is initiated first and please don't forget about Karl Rove and Rumsfield in the mix while you are at it. What? YOU say that we should NOT investigate THOSE charges for this one is much too important ..

WOW...it must hurt to have your brains.

Keep on beating that dead horse Steelie, that's the way to get your people elected and for you to keep your job come November.

I hear they're having a huge meeting at a sexual bondage club then a lovely dinner at a five star restaurant before calling it a night at the Four Seasons Hotel. Of course they are all flying in on private jets.

Will they bring escorts from "rent-a-boy" or will they just order from the hotel?
