It always comes down to calories in/calories out and eating quality, whole food that is not processed coupled with portion control. It is also helpful to slow down and enjoy the food. It's not that complicated but no one wants to hear this.

No it does NOT come down to calories in/calories out. Until people like this doctor and you and everyone else pushing the incorrect information get this through their thick heads we will not be able to have a positive effect on the problem of obesity. The balance required in the body is NOT a mathematical measure of heat (which is all that calories are), but rather a CHEMICAL BALANCE. The evidence is simply overwhelming that the number of calories you consume has very little to do in terms of causing fat to accumulate in the body. Fat accumulates because of the action of hormones. In studies, two identical rats can be fed identical food and have identical exercise and yet one rat will quickly become obese and the other will remain at a constant healthy weight. The rat that becomes obese is the one with extra insulin its blood. Same calories in, same calories out, yet it became obese. Even worse, when you put obese Zucker rats through a starvation diet (which is what a calorie restricted diet IS), a Zucker rat will die from starvation at a point at which it still has more than five times as much fat on its body as a rat without the extra insulin in its body. Likewise, squirrels gain fat in the fall whether or not they have extra food. Put one squirrel on a diet and it will become just as fat as its friend who eats anything they like.

Fanned and Favorited! You speak the truth. Until the old school medical establishment lets go of this and the antiquated BMI (as a health measurement tool), we'll never get the root cause of obesity.I just don't get the Calories in/calories out crowd. The argument always goes like this.
THEM: just eat less. a calorie is a calorie is a calorie.
ME: No, why is then if two people eat the exact same amount of food and have the exact same amount of exercise, why does one lose weight and one gain weight.
THEM: Well... One just has a fast metabolism.
ME: So, you're saying then, a calorie is NOT a calorie is NOT a calorie since two people burn energy differently?
THEM: No, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie, we all burn the same.
ME: But i just showed you how that doesn't make sense, can you explain the situation I described?
THEM: One just has a fast metabolism.
ME: And the fast metabolism burns energy more efficiently and quicker.
THEM: No, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie.
ME: time for stiff drink!

Thank you. We can easily debunk the whole calories in/calories out theory by asking a simple question. Would 2000 calories of twinkies have the same affect on your body as 2000 calories of chicken and veggies? IMO, the experts deliberately oversimplify weight loss because they know how easily intimidated the public is by anything that sounds even slightly complicated. Maybe if people quit eating processed food and just ate the foods humans were designed to eat, they wouldn't need to count calories in the first place. What did human beings do before anyone defined what a calorie is? Oh that's right. They used common sense to decide what to eat, what not to eat, and how much.

I think "Alvarask" and "JSDKoeln" covered this pretty well.I just wanted to add that there's 60 years of clinical research showing that calorie restriction and/or exercise as a way to treat obesity DOES NOT WORK.
Also, I think it's sad that you have to make a living by preying on the ignorance of other people.

I hate going grocery shopping.Almost everything is over precessed and contains little or no nutritive value.As long as it is marketed well, it will sell regardless of its nutritive value.Pop Tarts are not breakfast They are giant cookies.,

I am from outside Chattanooga, which had one of the original Coca-Cola bottling plants. I drank a jillion of those little, ice cold glass bottles in the 50's, 60's and 70's, until they went to cans, which tasted metlic, for some reason, and then worse, to plastic. I noticed that Coke and Dr Pepper lost their summer-refreshment quality about the time you cite. They didn't advertise the ingredient change at all, but my taste-buds certainly noticed. It was all tied to the Cuban embergo, and the price of cane sugar, not to health issues. It seems the main ingredient for these products is "GREED".

It seems the main ingredient for these products is "GREED". That's the truth. HFCS is very cheap to make and is hazardous to ones health. Anyway to make it cheaper & faster works for big business.
