Netanyahu: Activists On Board Ship Were 'Thugs' Who Came Prepared To Fight

ARON HELLER   06/ 6/10 09:49 PM ET   AP

Benjamin Netanyahu

JERUSALEM — Israel's prime minister claimed that the Turkish activists who battled Israeli naval commandos in a deadly clash last week prepared for the fight ahead of time, before boarding the ship in a different city from the rest of the passengers.

Benjamin Netanyahu's charges highlight Israel's frantic efforts to portray the activists as terrorists and counter a wave of harsh international condemnation that has left the Jewish state isolated and at odds with some of its closest allies.

Last Monday's operation, in which nine activists were killed aboard a ship headed to the blockaded Gaza Strip, damaged Israel's ties with Turkey – its main Muslim ally – and brought heavy pressure on Israel to lift the 3-year closure of Hamas-ruled Gaza.

Netanyahu told his Cabinet that "dozens of thugs" from "an extremist, terrorism-supporting" organization had readied themselves for the arrival of the naval commandos.

"This group boarded separately in a different city, organized separately, equipped itself separately and went on deck under different procedures," he said. "The clear intent of this hostile group was to initiate a violent clash with (Israeli) soldiers."

Late Sunday, Netanyahu's office released a statement saying he discussed the international criticism with world leaders, including Vice President Joe Biden, the president of France and the premier of Canada. Netanyahu told them any country would act in self defense if it were targeted by thousands of rockets as Israel has been by Gaza militants.

Videos released by the military have shown a crowd of men attacking several naval commandos as they landed on a ship from a helicopter, beating the soldiers with clubs and other objects and hurling one soldier overboard.

The military has displayed pictures of knives, slingshots and metal rods confiscated from the activists, and used video seized from security cameras – and reporters – on board the ship show a group of young men brandishing clubs and other weapons ahead of the arrival of the soldiers. The use of video confiscated from journalists has drawn sharp criticism from the Foreign Press Association in Israel, which demanded the military stop using the footage.

On Sunday, the Turkish daily Hurriyet showed new pictures taken by unidentified people of wounded Israeli commandos, including some with bloodied faces. Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said the images seemed to corroborate Israel's version of the events.

"It shows that our boarding party in fact did face deadly violence from the hardcore Islamist activists on the boat ... and that our boarding party was forced to respond," he said. "Had they not, they would have been killed."

The fighting took place on the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara, and the dead included eight Turks and a Turkish-American man. The ship was organized by the IHH, a Turkish Islamic charity that Israel has outlawed because of its alleged ties to Hamas. The group is not on the U.S. State Department list of terror organizations, however.

In Turkey, IHH head Bulent Yildirim said all passengers boarded the ship in the Turkish port of Antalya, and rejected suggestions that those who clashed with the soldiers were trained militants.

"Take a look at who was killed. They had pot bellies. They were old. They were young. Who would believe that they received special training?" he said.

Huwaida Arraf, a leader of the Free Gaza Movement, which organized the flotilla, denounced Netanyahu's claims as "another pack of lies."

Arraf said all the passengers were screened for weapons, and that partners in the mission, including IHH, agreed not to bring weapons on board.

Highlighting Israel's sense of isolation, the U.S. rock band Pixies announced Sunday it was canceling a concert in Tel Aviv this week. Organizers said the decision was related to last week's naval raid.

In a sign of Israeli frustration, some hard-liners produced a music video that parodies the events on the raided ship and has received more than a million hits on YouTube. A group of Israeli men and women portray the activists as Arab and Turkish militants with keffiyehs and mimic their accents. At the end, the mock activists wave clubs and knives in the air.

They sing a song with crude lyrics called "We Conned the World" – set to the tune of "We Are The World."

"We'll make the world abandon reason, we'll make them all believe that the Hamas is Mama Theresa," they sing.

The Israeli government press office relayed a link to the video to foreign correspondents on Friday, then recalled the message and apologized.

On Sunday, Netanyahu rejected a proposal by U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon for an international commission to investigate the raid, officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity pending a formal announcement.

They added that Netanyahu was open to a probe but did not agree with the exact format suggested by the U.N. chief.

Ban also spoke on Sunday to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan about an investigation into the raid, the U.N. said in a statement. It said that the Middle East peace Quartet – made up of representatives from the U.S., Russia, the European Union and the United Nations – would meet Monday to discuss how to proceed.

Outrage over the deaths has also prompted calls from many nations, including the U.S., for at least a partial lifting of a blockade Israel imposed, along with Egypt, after the militant Islamic Hamas overran Gaza in June 2007.

Israel and the West consider Hamas a terror group responsible for firing thousands of rockets at Israel and carrying out hundreds of bloody attacks, including suicide bombings. Hamas does not recognize Israel's right to exist, and Egypt fears the influence of Hamas radicals on its own Islamists.

Israel imposed the blockade hoping to weaken Hamas, prevent the entry of weapons and press for the release of an Israeli soldier captured in 2006, but the objectives have not been achieved.

Under the blockade, most exports from Gaza are banned, further depressing the territory's economy.

Netanyahu told officials in his Likud Party on Sunday that he has been in touch with "friendly nations" to discuss ways to allow more civilian goods into Gaza without allowing Hamas to bring in arms.

On Saturday, Israel commandeered another aid ship without incident. All 19 activists, including a Nobel Peace laureate, and crew were deported Sunday.

We know enough already.

Israel had two choices. One, declare that the shipments were all humanitarian and let them go through. Two, stop the ships and as they had announced before the confrontation, take control of the ships and sail them to Ashdod. In 2008, Israel allowed some small ships to reach Gaza. Israel should have let those ships go through.

NEITHER OF THESE ACTIONS WOULD HAVE BROKEN THE BLOCKADE. And I see no prospect of the blockade, in the sense of free access to the sea at Gaza, happening within the next few years. Anyone who thinks that Israel, under any circumstances, is going to allow unfettered access to Gaza from the sea is simply living in a fantasy world.

What happened on board the ships was entirely the choice of those on board. They knew that the end result would be the ships sailing to Ashdod. They're responsible for what happened.

Could Israel have done a better job when it boarded the ship? Yes. They needed to board in huge numbers, in riot gear. The problem is how do you do that on a moving ship---- do you have to disable it first?

This event was basically a "Sacrifice the Queen" move. The flotilla created a situation that they knew will provoke a response. When the resultant response unfolds, they then cry about the repercussions. Good chess game, but too bad they sacrificed some of their pawns to do it.
10:05 AM on 06/08/2010
People don't usually get killed for playing chess, and we wouldn't be playing this game if Israel wasn't keeping essential supplies from 1.5 million prisoners in the open air prison they maintain in Gaza.

The US needs to take charge and start flying in supplies round the clock. Take the billions of dollars we have been giving Israel and start buying aid. Israel has been abusing our relationship and it is long past the time to assert ourselves, stop asking Israel to come to the peace table, start demand they show.

Agreed. But unlike Berlin, Gaza has no airport. Bombed by the IDF since 1992. Gaza doesn't have a port of any significance either, but they have recently attempted to make it useful other than for small fishing boats -- which can no longer be used for fishing because the IDF keeps them in a narrow band of seawater that is polluted because the IDF has bombed the sewage plant ...

But Israeli "pulled out" of Gaza.

The ability of the "Jewish state" & their leaders, with a straight face, to deceive, manipulate, & fabricate about near every aspect of their occupation, ethnic cleansing & illegal colonization, killings & abuse of those who resist Israeli demands, or protest in any way, is astonishing in its arrogance & contempt for others. That the US, our leaders & elected reps, support & fund this essential inhumanity by Israel & their military makes us complicit to their crimes & destroys our honor & standing among the worlds nations. The whole world is watching this apartheid state now & the power of this war-monger killer of men, women & children (mostly unarmed) to manipulate world opinion with their deceit, lies, & press manipulation has been vastly diminished (except here in the US) & their ridiculous (or delusional) claims of being "the victim", while themselves doing the vast majority of killing, destroying & abuse of civilians, while overwhelmingly armed, is transparent falsity. This claim by Netanyahu regarding the flotilla massacre & shooting/execution of unarmed people is representative of that arrogance. Unarmed protesters are routinely shot & either killed or maimed/wounded in an intentional policy to silence & intimidate protesters. When Americans (& others) who protest Israeli depravity are repeatedly killed or maimed by IDF thugs & killers, & our leaders do nothing but continue in their role as lackeys & silent lap-dogs to Israeli/IDF barbarism, crimes, intolerance, racism & refusal to end the "conflict" they are as guilty as the depraved perpetrators.

Blah, Blah, Blah Have you seen the news? Perhaps not if you look at Google News you will only find a few dozen news stories as opposed to 10,000 stories when Israel is involved. The two stories are as follows: Iran during the last few days went into Iraq to kill and displace Kurds, the other story is that yesterday, Turkey bombed from the air Kurds in Iraq, again, killed, wounded displaced. Want an inquiry or are you just hyper-focused on the Jews and Israel.

Many people came for good intentions. They were used by the organizers as a shield. As usual.
08:52 PM on 06/07/2010
Thank god the IDF has never been swayed by human shields- they shoot right though them! Heck, they have fired wire-guided missiles into apartment building full of bystanders just so they could kill one guy in the basement. Remember the helicopter gunship firing machine guns at that jeep running though the market?

I do.

The recent incursion into Gaza they shelled a school filled with hundreds of bystanders- their excuse: a couple guys who they said fired on them ran into the shelter. NO problem: shell the school.

Be real: No one is going to use human shields when the IDF is involved. The only concern of the IDF is if Israelis are involved

Ah, so finally a LITTLE truth ekes out... "many people came with good intentions"....

So, they're NOT all a pack of "radical muslim extremist militant terrorist thugs" after all!

Oops... but there's that "perception" spinning coming back in again...

"used by the organizers as shields"........ "as usual". Wha...huh? And you know this, how, exactly?

Who told you that, because, I didn't see anyone "human shielding" on that ship...

You almost imply that if it were only 'the organizers' onboard, that ship would be at the bottom of the ocean?

Or something... what? What is your point?

BUT, but, but...

They certainly could have killed the Israeli soldiers - why didn't they if that was supposedly their intention?

Only people killed were peace-activists - by soldiers who had supposedly no intention to kill - hmmmm

Time for a regime change in Israel...
04:46 PM on 06/07/2010
Maybe it was because when these soft-hand soldiers were kidnapped, their friends rescued them using lethal force. It is called "Suicide by a soldier" and it is nothing but a well orchestrated sacrifice for PR sake.
05:25 PM on 06/07/2010
Seriously. I don't know if that's the case, but it's at least as likely as a group of Israeli commandos attacking a bunch of unarmed civilians unprovoked (if not more so). I just wish that people would consider both sides before they make their decisions.

"Suicide by a soldier" ,great imagination if not a little barbarous, your forgetting that the bullets hit most of the "suicided" in the back or back of the head ...explain that please .

There's a saying in my neighborhood, You don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

If the aid flotilla came wanting a fight, they'd have brought something more than sticks and stones and kitchen knives.

If the incident happens the way the IDF says it did, it would release every picture recording and video it confiscated from the passengers, as well as all the video and radio transmissions from its own forces.

It's odd... that guy on the ground isn't dressed like a Commando... it looks more like someone on the ship that had been wounded.

And it isn't a very big knife... a steak knife or something...

No-one is disputing that there was a pretty major altercation. It's just not helpful people putting words into mouths and intentions into minds, without having been there or knowing all the facts...

That page was spun specifically to make it look as if things were being manipulated against the Israelis.

Actually, I think about all we've seen for the past few days has been a raging propaganda war... I'd just like the facts, ma'am...

Interesting headline...

He's a pretty brave man. Israel goes out on the wire claiming he's essentially a "terrorist in training with Hamas..." But, no charges? Not held? No proofs?

Yeahhhh..... propaganda.

He proposed a debate. That is one I'd surely like to see. At least people would be talking.

The thugs who came in fighting were the Israeli commandos.

The activists defended themselves from the criminal boarders in international waters in the dead of night.

Netanyahu is insanely biased. And morally dead.

The incredible part is they committed and act of piracy on another nations ship. (Turkey)

Now somehow they spin it that people beat and kicked the pirates when they invaded the ship.

Also noticed the amount of arms and munitions that were captured on the Turkish ship.

These are the same friend's who sank in 1967 the USS liberty and killed 34 American sailors.

Remember the USS Liberty

perhaps if we had responded appropriately to the USS Liberty, Israel would not have become so bold and aggressive. They feel they're never wrong, and justified in any violence. We have created a very dangerous "friend".
11:01 PM on 06/07/2010
AMEN.

But LBJ was bogged down in Vietnam. America should have responded immediately, particularly against the torpedo boats the Israelis sent in to strafe Americans trying to deploy life rafts.

Shooting survivors escaping a sinking ship is a violation of maritime law but then so was attacking the ship in the first place. We know Israel is not a big stickler on international law or in taking prisoners.

The biggest sin was there was NO Congressional investigation into this deliberate attack, and it is the ONLY attack on a US vessel that did not have a Congressional investigation.

The survivors are now in their 60's and 70's. Congress would not dare to have the investigation, AIPAC would not approve.

Our "friend" has had its hands in our pockets ever since.

I am more impressed with the coffins than bloody knives (I have a knife on my keychain that is bigger than one of the knives Israel has "documented" as a weapon), and more important: Israel, a country, was caught doctoring photos and the audio transmission and transcript.

The people aboard the ship had nothing to do with the doctored photos reported in your link (if they were doctored). Israel is a COUNTRY so when it doctors pictures and audio (and this is not the first time they have done this kind of stuff) more people and official government is involved.

The Netanyahu spin.

In his statement last week he claimed "Yet it was Israel, and not Hamas, that was accused by the UN of war crimes."

This was a lie.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1213658/Israel-Palestine-committed-war-crimes-Gaza-war-says-UN.html

A United Nations investigation into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza has found evidence that both sides committed war crimes.
The investigation, led by former South African judge Richard Goldstone, concluded that 'Israel committed actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity,' during its December 27 to January 18 military operations in the Palestinian territories.
The global body said the report released today 'concludes there is also evidence that Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes, as well as possibly crimes against humanity,' by firing rockets into southern Israel.

Israel refused to cooperate with the investigation, saying the UN Human Rights Council that ordered it was biased against the Jewish state.
In a statement, the government said that the UN's mandate was clearly 'one-sided' and 'ignored the thousands of Hamas (Palestinian militants) missile attacks on civilians in southern Israel that made the Gaza operation necessary.'

And Israel lied here too when they said the UN ignored the rockets. Let me show again:

The global body said the report released today 'concludes there is also evidence that Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes, as well as possibly crimes against humanity,' by firing rockets into southern Israel.
