As many expected, Steve Jobs unveiled Apple's new iPhone 4 during his keynote address at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Jobs was full of praise for the iPhone 4--Apple's "new baby"--calling the new iPhone an "extraordinary" product that is "going to change everything, all over again."

Apple hype aside, what does the new iPhone really offer? We've put together a guide to the iPhone 4's features and everything you need to know about Apple's new device.

Thinner Frame

Steve Jobs called the iPhone 4 the "thinnest smartphone on the planet." At 9.3mm thick, the iPhone 4 is 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS.

If I can save just one of you....
Strike one: You can't have an iPhone for cell only. Data plans are MANDATORY adding a minimum of $15/mo in addition to your cell plan. Roaming extra.
Strike two: the obvious albatross of being tethered to AT&T which gets reception seemingly nowhere, but most importantly NOT in my apartment and NOT at work. If you use your cell in the car exclusively, the iPhone's for you.
Strike three: the iPhone requires multiple crApple purchases before being operable. You'll need a $30 case that will need to be replaced approximately 8 times a year; the iPhone is so fragile it can be shattered by loud noises. You'll also need crApple headphones in the event you don't feel like harvesting a cluster of brain tumors from the radiation as you hold your phone/GPS/internet datapull next to your skull while conversing. Not that you'd ever get a signal that long anyways. These will also need to be replaced bi-monthly.
Strike 4: Special "sport" headphones are required should you wish to use your iPhone while exercising, unless you want it to implode as microbeads of moisture seep in to wreak havoc on delicate the inner workings of this technological wonder. These will also need to be replaced several times. (note: sport headphones and phone headphones non-interchangeable)
Strike 5: You will not be able to send and receive photos to non-iphone users.
Strike 6: no non-crApple ringtones

That was great. Not true, but great.

It seems this generation of iPhone brings it back on par with the top-end Android models in terms of basic capabilities (carriers notwithstanding), but I'm sticking with my Nexus for now. The freedom of customization (I love widgets) and inclusive feel of the Android community still puts it on top.

That said, I think the new iPhone is pretty.

I hear you. I originally got hooked into the iPhone because I've had an iPod and love iTunes, so that seemed the natural way to go for me, but it's not the One True Phone or anything. I like being able to read my Kindle books on it. I will be looking to upgrade when I can because I am interested in better screen resolution and other new features.

It's still tied to AT&T, which means I'll be switching to HTC.

I drop 5 out of 10 calls if I talk more than 5 minutes (with full bars) and I STILL lose GSM where my buddies with other GSM service have no trouble

3G coverage is awful.

A contract upgrade means that if I want to swap out a 3GS for the 4, I'll have to start a NEW (limited) data plan,...which means being "Grandfathered" really doesn't matter.

If I can hop GSM carriers and make use of competition, I'll consider buying it since the camera and the battery have improved (though the 'phone' functionality itself is still a decade behind...)

- if not, I'll be dropping Apple for certain.

The slave-labor thing is a big factor too, I should add.

iPhone 4, it is really amazing, but it's battery seems drain faster than other brands such as Nokia.
I used iPhone 3GS and I found that it's battery life is shorter. This might be because of it's small capacity of batter with big widescreen.

ATT wouldn't work on five phones we got on our family plan because we have a stucco home. Five different phone models and none worked because of poor coverage. Yikes!! The sales rep told us to use them outside of the home. I dropped the service.

Don't be presumptuous HP; it's offensive.

I don't need to know anything about the Iphone, and it's pretty annoying that you think I would.

There!

It must be nice being Apple and not having to pay for ads on HP.

Here's a 16th need to know:

The factory in China that makes most of the IPads and IPhones pays the average worker less than $300.00 per month to work in sweatshop conditions....according to CNN there have been 10 suicides of workers at that factory this year....think about that when you pony up $500. for the latest convenience to make our lives easier.....no wonder our unemployment rate is 10%....we are committing economic suicide by continuing to support slave labor....

There is nothing "cool" with this.....

1) Learn about Purchasing Power Parity (hint: $100 in the US goes a lot further in China, India and other countries)

2) Foxconn makes more than just Apple products

3) The suicide rate is lower than in China as whole
06:31 PM on 06/09/2010
So with regards to 3. If Walmart had 15 people jump off the building and commit suicide within a matter of 3 or 4 months and had their employee's sign an agreement saying they will not commit suicide, would that be ok because it is still under the national average of the US or would you think there may be something wrong with Walmart and the way the treat their employee's?

Come on, use your brain quit listening to the talking heads and repeating their talking points.

1) Learn about basic economics and you will understand why the middle class in America is in free fall.

2) Learn about child and prison labor and maybe if you have any sense of fair play you will re-think your position.

3) I don't know where you get your stats on suicide in China, but i question your source.

Here's what I need to know from people who have the new phone - do I need to upgrade from my 3G. Is it worth the expense?

I hate Steve Job partnership with AT&T, and not giving other carriers like t-mobile a chance to have the iphone. But I am sticking with android phones for giving all carriers the availability for there phones.
05:15 PM on 06/13/2010
You mean 'their phones' not 'there phones'. The Internet has made us illiterate.

As nice as this thing looks I'm dropping AT&T and the iPhone and gettin the EVO 4G. Practically the same thing and I won't have to jailbreak it to make it function the way I want it to.
02:03 PM on 06/09/2010
Just remember, if you aren't on 4G (which is very limited) you can't use data and voice at the same time. And don't forget to pony up for the 16GB memory card (it only has 1GB internal memory)

I've been seeing more and more netbooks around...little 10 inchers with Win7.

I have yet to see a person in the wild whip out and use an iPhone or iPad -- say on a train or bus or at Starbucks.

I find that hard to believe. You have never seen an iPhone used in the wild? I take mine everywhere and use it for almost everything. My laptop has since become more of a desktop.

Most of the folks I hang with have iPhones and they help us gather together, and are heavily used while we are out. We constantly have our phones out checking movie times, locating lunch spots, running down the best prices for things. What's really funny is that we have iPhone radar when it comes to spotting the millions of other users while were going about. There's always people on iPhones.

Well I dont hang out in the Wild but I do take Metro Link from Orange County to LA everyday with my Ipad. But as someone who uses the train a lot, I still see way way more people on their blackberry and smart phones then Ipad's. I am surprised that still 2 months after its release, people still ask me what it is

Methinks it's meant more as a preview of things to come. That said, I am getting a bit tired of Jobs saying everything they do will be 'revolutionary' when it clearly isn't.
