Dogfish Head Unveils Miles Davis-Inspired Beer, Bitches Brew

Dogfish Head Bitches Brew Beer Miles Davis

First Posted: 06/07/10 06:09 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:40 PM ET

Beer visionary Sam Calagione and his colleagues at Dogfish Head Brewery have unveiled Bitches Brew (official site here), to commemmorate the 40th anniversary of Miles Davis' epic jazz record of the same name.

Dogfish's Bitches Brew is described as "a bold, dark beer that's a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root, a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece."

The beer's label features the late Mati Klarwein's famous artwork from the original album.

Sam Calagione talked about the beer in April at Dogfish's annual Off-Centered Film Festival:

"We just did the test batch our pub. It is a threaded beer which means multiple primary fermentations [...] and then you blend them together from multiple threads. It is a blend of Tej, which is the native African beer which is actually honey beer. They use gesho root because hops don't grow in Africa and gesho is the bittering component that counterbalances the sweetness of the honey. That's one thread. Three threads is an imperial stout with Muscovado sugar. Post-fermentation, we'll blend those together to make Bitches' Brew and that will come out in August." (Watch the video of Sam's discussion of Bitches Brew.)

Materials on the release of Bitches Brew (the beer) note that Sam Calagione has long had a strong affinity for the Miles Davis record:

Calagione was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan."

Dogfish's Bitches Brew will be available in 750ml bottles in August 2010. (No word on if it will be served at the upcoming -- and also visionary -- Batali/Dogfish project Eataly.)

Hasn't arrived here in CA yet, so I have to drink the 90 min. IPA for consolation. I have a vinyl version of Davis' Bitches Brew which I will convert for my iPod so I can play it when I get the opportunity to try it!!

There are worse fates than being condemned to drink the 90 Minute IPAs! ;-)

Hasn't made it to CA yet, but I'm eager to try it. I must find my vinyl version of Davis' Bitches Brew so I can have it playing on my iPod when I finally get a chance to try it. We have Dogfish 90 min. IPA here in town, so that's some consolation. (burp).

It will be difficult to beat their IPAs.

You must listen to the album as you drink the beer.

Maybe a bottle of this and North Coast's Brother Thelonious. Might make for a nice evening.

Brother Thelonius is pretty fine stuff, too. Love the label. (Compare to the happy monk on the bottle of St. Bernardus.)

AWESOME.

I just hope this doesn't start a trend that will result in tacky executions.

Lagunitas had a pretty good little ale that commemorated the first albums of the Mothers of Invention. (Actually, it wasn't little. One of those bombers would have you feeling pretty good.) The not so secret word is beer.

The horror... the horror. I'm sure everyone will be thinking about that Muscovado sugar and gesho root when they quaff this "beer".

You obviously haven't tried much Dogfish Head. It comes close to cracking the code of human existence. :)

One of the greatest jazz albums ever and one of the greatest album covers ever. I'd almost be scared to taste the beer for fear of disappointment. Great to see them put the album cover on the bottle too...genius! This guy's love of the music gives me the impression that this seminal tribute is in good hands.
Now if Herbie Hancock's Headhunters album could be turned into a beer...

Miles Davis did make one the top five jazz albums ever, but it was titled "Kind of Blue." And Herbie Hancock made one of the top five jazz albums ever, but it was titled "Maiden Voyage."

In 1974 Hancock was on tour promoting the Headhunters album. I was building my first Blue Note collection (LP) at the time and had no idea that the creator of Dolphin Dance, my favorite tune at the time, had -- shall we say -- changed direction. I got a front row seat at the concert. I was horrified by what transpired on stage. Herbie Hancock didn't even play piano that night. I was angry for a long time; I guess concert tickets seemed expensice back in grad school. I might be more receptive today. I hated the electronic sound Creed Taylor was producing with his CTI label at that time, but about a quarter century later went through a phase in which I bought many of the once-despided CTI albums on CD. With that thought, I will revisit the Headhunters experience this afternoon.

After that I'm too exhausted to think about beer, but look forward to Bitches Brew.

Fanned for knowledge and for calling out my populist submission! Quite frankly, my post originally said Maiden Voyage but I thought I might lose too many readers by being too "purist". Headhunters' massive popularity made me change my post in hopes of finding more familiarity among the masses. I WOULD be ashamed for doing so if the album still wasn't so damned awesome!

Props to you though, Maiden Voyage was and is still Herbies greatest to me!

Story has it that it was actually Miles who convinced Herbie to play an electronic keyboard and Herbie initially hated the thought of it.

I forgot to mention that at the 1974 Herbie Hancock concert, I sat directly in front of Bennie Maupin, who made a lasting impression on me, and made me a fan of jazz bass clarinet.

Amazing how Miles blew the doors off of several styles of music. He cultivated an image, but it sounds like he was a really sweet guy who remains underappreciated for the titanic influence he had on music.

I grew up with electric music and found Miles take on it totally compelling. Amazing too how so many of his sidemen and associates went on to create innovative and sometimes revolutionary music of their own (Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, many others). Agreed with others on this thread that Bennie Maupin is an awesome player. He seems to pour his whole body and his whole being into the horn.

Got a good friend that's into Miles and has a nice stereo. If we can find it, we'll give this beer a taste test while listening to Miles!

It's About (that) Time! I've got Great Expectations for this beer, which I'm certain will put me in a Spanish Key. Afterwards, I'll be up for a Pharaoh's Dance while Miles Runs the Voodoo Down!

(hmm - I'm wondering if I should change my screen name to PostModern Geek?)
