Did You Know? Bands That Formed In College (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 06/09/10 05:57 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:45 PM ET

If we had a nickel for every band formed in college ... we'd have a massive pile of nickels. It seems there's nothing like a university setting to inspire young people to make music. We can't include everyone in this show, so weigh in the comments section with ones we missed.

Steely Dan

Steely Dan officially started when Donald Fagen and Walter Becker crossed paths at Bard College in 1967.

My band, Ancient Future, which is the world's first and longest running musical ensemble dedicated exclusively to the mission of the creation of world fusion music, was formed in 1978 by students at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California. Ancient Future can be thought of as an offshoot of an offshoot of an offshoot of the Grateful Dead. Mickey Hart and Jerry Garcia were part of the Diga Rhythm Band, which was a project of Zakir Hussain and his students at the Ali Akbar College of Music. Two future founders of Ancient Future moved into the house where the Diga Rhythm Band rehearsed, which led to the formation of the band Ancient Future. Check out http://www.ancient-future.com/history.html for the full story!

The guys from Phish met at UVM, but their most legendary Halloween (and Springfest), concerts happened at Goddard, where they eventually transferred to. Jon & Trey are Goddard alums.

The Pixies were founded when Frank Black was roommates with Joey Santiago, right? But they weren't very influential or anything... ((***sarcasm***))

So, you've never listened to Steely Dan, then, or Hall and Oates. And it's clear you've never heard Talking Heads do anything. And I can also say with a fair amount of certainty that you've never heard a Queen song.

Put your headphones back on go back to listening to Brittany Spears and Lady Gag.

Actually, with the exception of the Talking Heads, all the bands highlighted in this piece do, in fact, suck.

I think they met in high school, though I may be wrong.

Regardless, they're hands-down the best band in the world.

This is such a silly article simply because college is where a LOT of bands meet... unless they knew each other beforehand or are made up of members who have left bands from college. College towns are the easiest places to start bands and play for a lot of people. Before being called "alternative music," the genre was called "college rock" because the majority of the bands were formed in college.

B-52s, REM, Indigo Girls and Widespread Panic... all from University of Georgia, or Dave Matthews Band and the Hackensaw Boys from UVA, or Ben Folds Five from UNC, Better than Ezra from LSU, Styx - Chicago State, Devo - Kent State, Public Enemy - Adelphi, Blue Oyster Cult - SUNY, Umphrey's McGee - Notre Dame, Seven Mary Three - William and Mary, Chicago - DePaul, REO Speedwagon - University of Illinois
