Marriage is a sacrament to many, a promise and a moral commitment to God and each other. ~ Sally Quinn

Not wishing to sound like Martin Luther, but marriage is not a sacrament, at least for Protestants. It might be for the Catholic Church and its twin the Orthodox Church. Marriage is a very human convention - certainly not divine. It would seem that Al and Tipper have greatly honored this all-too-human institution of marriage. I am also sure that they will never not love each other. But the truth of the matter is that we change and a marriage may have to change.

Yes, but we should be more ceremonious of happy marriages that last a long time. That is, after all, terribly romantic, and it's something that I'd imagine everyone wants.

There is a rumour going around that Al Gore had a 2-year relationship with Larry David's wife. So much for "redefining the sacrament". Nobody divorces after 40 years for no reason. Nobody.

My parents split up after 46 years of marriage. My mother decided she couldn't stand being married to my Dad for another year. On the other hand my father believed marriage was forever and despite her huge unhappiness - and his own - he fought the separation and divorce tooth and nail.

I firmly believe my father killed my mother with the emotional torment, she died before the divorce was final. The stress of it was just more than she could endure at that age, it took a terrible toll.

And I will forever blame my father for her death.

It would have been so much nicer if they had just amiably gone their separate ways like the Gores.

Amicably? Are you sure about that?

So now the Gores are theologians defining the sacrament of marriage?

Democrats have always been the moral compass for the country.

As opposed to bastions of marital fidelity like Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich.

Marriage in only a sacrament for the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Luther rejected it as a sacrament along with other sacraments. If marriage is so scared why isn't its most sacred act performed in public (a question Ann Lee of the Shakers posed)?

>"People change and grow in different directions."

A married couple only grows in different directions as a direct result of not spending enough time together. If you neglect each other, of course you'll grow in opposite directions. On the other hand, if you take the time and effort to develop shared interests, you can still occasionally enjoy separate interests while growing together, not apart.

The fact that their kids are grown means the divorce is not a disaster, but neither is it a cause for celebration. Sometimes divorce is necessary, but "growing apart" is something easily preventable. And for the record, I'm an atheist and liberal.

Rush Limbaugh has done four times as much as the Gores to redefine the sanctity of marriage.

While I have some respect for the public decency that the Gores showed in their separation, I think this might be a bit too much over-sanctifying their actions.

Marriage won't be redefined in this century until it includes all people of loving and responsible intentions (read: LGBT). Then I'll buy the headline, not before.

"The Gores: Redefining The Sacrament Of Marriage For The 21st Century"

That is the most ridiculous headline I've seen in a long time. Really stupid.

Good for both of them. Like Sally said, they have both grown in different directions. I can see it, I can understand it. My best wishes go with them.

Oh, Gore "grew" in a different direction alright... :)

There might be some validity to this article, but we have not heard the whole story yet. John Edwards, so-called champion of the poor, was thought to be some great guy when he quit because his wife had cancer. How did THAT turn out?
05:17 PM on 06/10/2010
Seriously, the Gores' breakup is redefining the sacrament of marriage? Did Sally Quinn just wake up from a 50-year slumber?

Good for the Gore's that they have quit playing the political game and instead are following what Jesus/The Prince of Peace said that he came for:

"That you would have life to the full; abundant life."John 10:10

And that takes deep thought and action.

Um, Jesus was talking about achieving the kingdom of God, aka a kingdom of justice, exactly on earth and no where else. Just mho.

Wow, a celebrity couple splits up and suddenly they're "redefining the sacrament of marriage?" Must be a slow news day.
