China Farmer Fights Eviction With Homemade Cannon, Rockets (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 06/10/10 09:41 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:45 PM ET

A farmer in central China is defending his right to land ownership by using homemade rockets to ward off government attempts to evict him.

Since February, farmer Yang Youde, 56, who resides on the outskirts of Wuhan in China's Hubei province, has successfully thwarted two attempts to flatten his home by firing the cannon -- which he crafted out of used stove pipes -- and igniting 2,000 yuan (300 dollars) worth of fireworks toward demolition crews, China Daily reported.

"I shot only over the heads to frighten them," Yang said in an interview. "I didn't want to cause any injuries."

Yang is not alone in his dispute. According to the Associated Press, a nationwide boom has lead to a series of violent confrontations between residents and government officials over property seizures, with many businesses eager to cash in by evicting residents and developing their land. In November, a 47-year-old woman living in the Sichuan province died 16 days after setting herself on fire over the planned demolition of her husband's textile business.

In the early 1990s Yang signed a contract that entitles him to the disputed land through 2029, according to reports. However, all neighboring farmland has recently been requisitioned for a government project that includes the construction of several buildings.

Local authorities say that Yang was offered 130,000 yuan ($19,000) for his land. But Yang, citing government legislature on compensation for land use, is demanding nearly five times that amount.

"I'm a farmer," he said. "My whole life depends on farming. If I surrender, I have nowhere to go."

We in the new Amerika aren't that much better. This pitiful excuse for a government we have can now take your property for 'economic development'. That is not what the founding fathers meant in the Constitution, but the Supreme Count said it was legal. The Founders meant a government taking to include for things like roads, canals, schools, forts etc., not shopping malls. So much for your human right to property.

they've ALWAYS been able to do that. Any time the city, county, state or federal government wants a chunk of land they WILL get it one way or the other. Just ask the Cherokee...

Worse, the energy companies can blow the top off the mountain you live by and crush you in rubble and poison your water. Or the natural gas companies and pump carcinogenic frac water under your ground and your house can fill with gas or blow up. Unregulated fracking (we're not even allowed to know what is in their secret recipe brine) is going to cause this country's Bhopal and there's nothing anyone's going to do about it. Just like no one did anything leading up to the mine disaster and the gulf spill.

The Country Formerly Known As Communist spins it's own enlightened nation in the general direction of Europe, the United States, South America, and Africa... targeting the poor.

Trying to protect his home with rockets. I believe that makes him a terrorist.

I believe that makes him a hero. Maybe you should try looking up the definition of a terrorist, because it certainly hasn't been used correctly in years.

Conflict over territory has been part of life since the first ameoba pushed back at another amoeba.

You can see high rise towers in the background of the first photo.

Yang Yourde from southern China is fighting against regional bureacrats and developers who are obviously corrupt, and I hope he succeeds in keeping his land or at least gains fair compensation for it. The man states he doesn't want to hurt anyone. Good luck to him for getting his story out on the internet. Hopefully, this publicity will make senior Chinese lawmakers take a close look at the situation and make things right for Yang and his neighbours.

Nice......
Story makes the guy out to be a hero.
I'm all for it.
However, were that here in the US&A he would be labelled a tea-bagger extremist m!l!t!a movement guy, there would be 5,000 posts on this thread and he would be treated like Waco Seige Pt. 2.
12:56 AM on 06/11/2010
and in china he's 'labeled' differently? it's not about the United States. It's about how governments everywhere are targeting the poor in the name of maximizing profit.
01:21 AM on 06/11/2010
I'd support that American if he was a poor farmer being evicted for no reason other than a government (or some kind of) land grab.
