PHOTOS: DC Cupcake Contest

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/10/10 12:47 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:45 PM ET

Washingtonians showed that they are what they bake with entries to Dupont Circle bakery Hello Cupcake's "Design Your D.C." cupcake challenge. The amateur cake decorators crafted D.C.-inspired cupcakes that reflected their love for the city, and the panel of judges chose winners for: most creative use of fondant; most likely to be eaten; best use of theme and best-designed political statement. On June 5, the grand prize winner with the best overall cupcake design went home with a KitchenAid Stand Mixer, while subcategory winners walked away with KitchenAid Hand Mixers. To further sweeten the deal, KitchenAid sponsored a second competition in the democratic tradition from June 7 to June 11, in which seven finalists battled it out to become the fan favorite.

See all the entries below, and read more from one of the winners and from one of the judges.

The DC Metro cupcake was awesome (but the photo was published in mirror-image). Surprised no one else mentioned this.

They are pretty to look at but I don't think I could eat it with all that rolled fondant. YUCK.

The Chinatown 'Noodle Bowl' cupcake as well as the DC Metro cupcake were fantastic, in my opinion.

Most of these are amazing.

Numbers 14 and 17 didn't stack up with the rest, they just looked like regular old cupcakes.

They were all so creative. I especially liked the Metro map.

Chinatown is an interesting choice for a winner considering that DC has almost no Chinatown to speak of.

Come to think of it, what you said is true.

Chinatown one confuses me. That should be called the "Rockville cupcake" instead since year after year there are less and less actual Chinese restaurants in what we call "Chinatown"

Some of those are really awesome. Not too appetizing, but cool to look at.
