Oil Spill

washingtonpost.com:

The Deepwater Horizon well has most likely spewed 25,000 to 30,000 barrels of oil a day, more than previously estimated, according to a group of scientists appointed by the federal government to study video of the dark geyser at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

so the govt paid some scientists and they came up with a relatively happy number

heres some real, independent, scientific analysis
link to scientist thorough report on gusher rate

Instead of drill baby drill, it has become kill baby kill.

Looking on the bright side, if we kill off every living thing in the Gulf we can really "Drill Baby Drill" without repercussions. This spill can then migrate to the Atlantic and we can kill off everything there as well. Before the oil moves into colder waters we can harvest every whale, and endangered species before they become extinct, and think of the money to be made there. What a wonderful world we live in!

If Halliburton, Transocean and BP executives don't fit the definition of terrorist, I can't imagine who would. No terrorist, no matter how many years he's been waterboarded in our torture gulag, has ever done a tiny fraction of the damage inflicted by these three companies.
Not even close.
The only other mega-terrorists in their league are the coal companies, especially Massey. And someone explain to me why the investigation into the deaths of those 29 miners at the Massey mine is being held behind closed doors.
What possible rationalization can justify keeping the facts of that disaster a secret from the American public? It's vital for us to know all about that disaster because there are a score more ready to unfold throughout the coal industry. Yet some judge -- presumably not the one closely linked by the press to Massey -- can just decree that the public must never find out about the men who inflict these catastrophes on our country?

Absolutely Fanned and FAVED!

What's happening is beyond criminal... And if Bush was the "decider", Obama is the "compromiser"!

As another poster put it earlier tonight "what's it going to take for Washington to REALLY act in this crisis, oil coming out of their faucets"?!! (paraphrased)

ok, NOW we have spent 50 some off days of trying to calculate just how much oil is being leaked into the gulf, can we get on with figuring out how to CLEAN IT UP?
02:31 AM on 06/11/2010
Of course we all knew this already. It was just a matter of time when they would come out with that themselves. Because if BP now says they're containing 15000 barrels for example, next question would be how can you contain 15000 barrels out of 5000 barrel "leakage". I guess they somehow solved all our energy problems. It would be almost like inventing perpetual motion.

Interesting how the media plays with us. the headline speaks of gallons, the story of barrels. Different units of measurement. Of course 'million' is a much more shocking number than 25,000. I think its terrible what has happened but this kind of playing with emotions helps nobody.
02:26 AM on 06/11/2010
Why, just the other day I heard a guy who sounded more like an oil shill than a scientist and he told us viewers that less than 1% of the oil will reach shore for mis-somethingerother. "Mis-somethingerother" was his word for 'needs to be cleaned up'.

So, let's see. Less than 1% of 1 million... hey! That's just a measly 10,000!!!

I can hear it now..."Just think what it COULD have been!"

*sigh*

It's probably more like a bazillion-teen-gazillion-teen truck-loads per hour, but we'll never know..
It's all in the interest of PROFIT!
And PROFIT IS KING!!!

why is BP in charge of the airspace over the spill, and why wont they allow flights over it, so the people can see the size of the spill from a high altitude on a daily basis? why doesn't the federal government change this fact immediately??

Because the U.S. Federal Government is a 'wholly owned and operated' subsidiary of the 'Global Corporate Power Structure'...

BP IS IN CHARGE!
Get used to it!

It is not only the U.S. Federal Government, hate to bring it to you. It is ALL of us. Corporations are in charge. The bigger, the more grip they have.
02:31 AM on 06/11/2010
It's time the feds just take over the operation, kick BP off the whole thing, and bring in a team of experts from the OTHER oil companies, top scientists, and top federal agency officials led by a knowledgeable federal coordinator (Thad Allen's fine AFAIC) and get this thing done. It's in the oil industry's interest to put an end to the gush.

I truly do not want to sound pessimitic but it is going to be a long hot summer. There will be oil everywhere, on the beaches, in the water, in the marsh, on boats, everywhere!!!

And some folks are saying that this is not a ecological catastrophe. These people are so out of touch with reality that they should be a card carrying memeber of the republican party. Oh sorry, most of these folks are members of the republican party. There are a few "blue-dog democrats" who are saying drill baby drill.

My comment to these folks is let's see if you'll be talking your same stale language around October or November when the oil is located on every beach. I won't be laughing for it is not a laughing matter. But I will be wondering "Who elected these people???"

No surprise here...only that our own government was lying to us for so long about it. I believe it is bigger than this estimate though.

Did Rahm strike a deal with BP on lowballing the estimate to get campaign contributions?

........(continued). That said, could some at BP have been paid by a foreign power to make this disaster happen? Certainly not someone loyal to BP or the USA. Could a person(s) have been paid to make this happen? What better way to wage a war against a country than to destroy its environment, appear helpless and unable to come up with ideas to make it stop or contain it or clean it up. Allow it to continue for an UNKNOWN amount of time, worsening the mess and the disaster. This is starting to look like it was MORE THAN DELIBERATE. This is starting to look like it was an attack on this country, and I fear, IT WILL NOT BE THE LAST.

Sounds crazy doesn't it? Does it? Really?

The British are coming?? really? I disagree, actually. This is not a nation on nation attack. This is just another multinational corporation flouting the will of the people, and the result of corporate greed and payola government corruption-- allowing for regulators to water down enforcement and look the other way, or weaken our own government's regulatory oversight. BP doesn't represent the UK any more than Dow Chemical or Goldman Sachs represents the USA. It's actually up to the community of nations to resist the multinationals, and that means that we start to adapt the same regulations that the UK, and other European nations exert over their drilling platforms, at the very least... while really backing a progressive and viable industrial grade energy policy that doesn't rape the environment. We have enough BP holdings in the US to put them into receivership, and we should... beyond that, we have the cleanup of this disaster, and policy making towards preventing the next one. We can change more from within, rather than pretending that we need to go to war with the UK, or something.

When you think, that this filthy mess could have been contained weeks ago in the form of a giant underwater curtain surrounding it, anchored to the ocean floor, that would have encased the flow into a strong and durable and flexible barrier where at the surface, it could have been immediately sucked up into waiting tankers, one can only wonder why this was not done? It would have afforded the oily greed merchants the opportunity to sell it all, avoid this massive environmental disaster, and save their image. WHY? or better yet, WHY NOT? This is a war, plain and simple. America is under attack. Our lives, livelihoods and ONLY HOME are being destroyed by this, AND NO ONE SEEMS TO REALLY GIVE A DAMN but the people living there whose lives are being destroyed............(continued)

This estimate was done before they were given access to the high-quality images, and before the cap placed on that multiplied the leak by factors. I would wager that you can multiply the high end number by 2 at very least for a closer to accurate number on the leaking oil. As to why it matters CGW, well, the more people realize how bad this is going to get, the more people will hopefully get off their rears and do something. Demand access to reports, work on bio/myco remediation efforts, raise money for wildlife cleaning, protest lax government oversight, tell Obama to stop talking tough and actually do something. At very least he could let reporters and their helicopters to report, you know, like they do in free countries? BP is sweeping this under the rug, by downplaying the spill, and using dispersants to keep it out of sight, out of mind. This has to change to get the balls rolling that need to be. There should be more criminal investigations into the stock dumping in the weeks leading up to the disaster as well.. Some of the "insider" reports leaking out are absolutely terrifying, but our unsubstantiated because somehow, BP has been put in charge of the police and coast guard! What have we become? Peasants, waiting for our crumbs. Change now, or forever be enslaved.
