Robert Menendez: Oil Spill Will Be A Political Issue In 2010 Elections

Robert Menendez

The senator in charge of getting Democrats elected in the fall predicted on Thursday that the oil spill in the Gulf would become a major issue used to symbolize differences between the parties.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) briefed reporters on Thursday about the state of the electoral landscape roughly five months before the 2010 midterm elections. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chair projected predictable optimism. A major part of the party's changes, he said, was predicated on the turnaround of the nation's economy. But that wouldn't impede other issues from coming into play. And one of the topics that Democrats will capitalize upon, Menendez acknowledged, will be the aggressive response they have had to the oil spill in the Gulf.

"I am leading on the whole question of creating unlimited liability," he said. "And I just can't fathom why my Republicans colleagues can't simply join us. If you say you want to have the fisherman, the commercial fisherman... the seafood process in the coastal communities, the estuaries, the tourism industry all be held harmless there is one way to do that, and that is lifting the liability cap because $75 million ain't going to meet it. Credit Suisse came out with an estimate that it may cost $35-36 billion.

"The administration has come out for unlimited liability," he added. "They stand for continuing to protect big oil. And I think that that contrast, among other things we are doing -- the administration looking at whether criminal prosecution is necessary, us giving the commission subpoena power to get to the heart of the facts, and a whole host of other actions that Democrats are taking -- created a real contrast about who stands on your side, who is looking to make big oil responsible as opposed to who is in the pocket of Big Oil."

In actuality, the issue of oil and energy has already found its way into a few primary elections with various candidates accusing Republicans of doing Big Oil's bidding. There may be some political sensitivity in trying to draw political advantages out of the gravest environmental disaster in U.S. history. And there are serious questions as to whether the Obama administration's handling of the crisis will prove difficult for Democrats to run on.

Certainly, it would be easy to imagine Republicans making the case that this is a moment of calamity, not triumph, for their political adversaries. That said, Democrats on the Hill and in the administration have begun pushing a series of measures that could provide uncomfortable votes for the GOP -- namely on the issue of BP's liability. And Menendez's comments do indicate that the party sees no downside in making the case that this oil spill is an indictment of the energy policies and special interest domination of the GOP.

How many lies and misrepresentations are we expected to swallow?
We all want to see successful decisions coming out of the “Gulf Oil Spill”, but to make political fodder out of the situation borders on criminal. We all understand that BP is responsible for the inadequate system that was in place. However when it comes to making sure that damage, both ecologically and economically is minimalized and controlled we look to our government.
So far the most interest seen out of the current administration is that of political advantage, photo ops, and lies about doing all they can to protect the area ecologically. If that were true we would have international help in terms of cleaning the oil spill already in place from other nations and from our own companies that make use of foreign ships and technology. We are not making use of the technology that exists because the administration does not want to step on the toes of big labor. That is ridiculous and borders on criminality. We are not all stupid Mr. Obama and its time that you start representing the country that you took an oath to protect. If you don’t our votes will put people in office that do care. It’s one thing to want to get an agenda through, but not at the expense of the Americans in that region and across the entire nation.
Step up sir and make the right things happen, you were elected to be a leader.

? Some items of interest on my part: I don't think that the Arkansas Primary has anything to do with not allowing foreign ships and seamen to help contain and pick up the spill. I don't care about poor media management, but I do care that concern about perception rather than substantive action is the priority. What do you mean by ultimate capacity? I can't even understand your fourth point. I'm sure that the people living in the Gulf area would question about oil on the shore.

Unless the Federal Government gets their act together and actually does some work - cleaning up the oil, placing BP in receivership, firing everyone in MMS - there will be big problems for democrats and incumbants in November and in 2012. Our government is lazy and incompetent. BP is a sociopathic corporation. Our government is ineffectual and is not in charge!

While there are close to 4000 oil & gas platforms in US waters in the Gulf, there are over 50,000 wells.

And get this - BP l!ed to the government about having a disaster response plan, but does that mean that all of the other oil companies drilling in the gulf lied, too? Each was required to file a plan.

50,000 oil wells, and no safety plans.

On The Rachel Maddow Show -

Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STDJnM2BXTE

Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHuRT-DF4C8

There is no way that the government (Congress and presidential administrations) didn't know that all of the oil companies falsified disaster plans.

For the government to issue permits, to allow drilling offshore, in ecologically sensitive areas, to let oil companies drill and potentially destroy Americans' food supplies and our source of oxygen (80% of the earth's oxygen comes from the oceans) is an act of treason. It's beyond what Al Qaeda could ever do to this nation.

ALL offshore drilling must stop.
02:37 AM on 06/11/2010
Wow, I didn't know that many well.

This is why they are having a 6 month moratorium.

One think Ken Salazar said at the hearing today is that they are trying to do as much as they can in Parallel (vesus serially, i.e one After another) So that time will be saved.

That said, It means they have to go through all the Permits and inspect the (is it 50 Platforms out there in the Deep water)

Sadly this puts them in a Terrible position against the Employees that are out there
(3600 In the deep water I think) whom they Care about...

But they have to check the wells.

Reducing dependence will have to be INCREMENTAL...Mean time Shallow water drilling continues (Since Sallow can be reached by Human beings)

(They = White House & Democrats who really do care about oil company and all employees
despite what Flush Lintbog tells them every day of the week.

The other day Flush Lintbog pointed out that it takes 5 Weeks for his thing To take hold on listeners. What he meant is that it takes five weeks before his BRAINWASHING LIES begin to work.

The moratorium is only for drilling NEW wells.

It's got nothing to do with ongoing wells and their maintenance.

Ixtoc in 1979 and Montara last year were both in shallow depths and they gushed for months.

There is no such thing as safe drilling of any offshore oil wells.

Replying to myself: Democrats and the White House care about Oil Company EMPLOYEES and all American Employees.

ANATOMY OF THE DUMMING DOWN OF AMERICA

**What's More important?**

A) How things look on TV? (i.e. CNN is to Journalism what Painting by numbers is to Art).
B) OR How things Are?!!!

And were I running against James Carvile &the Spun Spinner Anderson Cooper (who seems ot have had his education cut by Reagan) My Slogan would be:

"It about Knowledge &Intelligence Stupid!!" Theyre HIGHTLY poorly informed! and being from the World of Spin, they (like Chris Mathews) CONFUSE spin WITH REALITY. which they know NOTHING about!!

Yet! together with the Republicans THEY CONTROL OUR INFORMAITON PIPELINES AND
BLOWING CARBON MONIDE THROUGH THEM.

HOW THINGS ARE:
(1) Since Day #1 Obama has been fully engaged (even Though he's got a country to run) and he THROUGH interior Secretary Ken Salazar HAVE BEEN IN A "DIRECTIVE SUPERVISORY ROLE" WITH BP.Like doctor to a Nurse, Engineer to Technician.

2) WAS OBAMA who directed BP to drill SECOND Relief Well.
3) WAS OBAMA who during the 1st hour Directed them to call around the world for every boom they could get (got 2 million)
4) 20,000 people were hired, needing TRAINING, in hazardous materials .
5) Secretary Chu gathered together 160 of the Best Minds in the world (Oil Cospecialists to
physists,
6) It's they who brought in GAMA RAY PHOTOGRAPHY so they can see THE ACTION OF THE VALVES AS THEY DO THINGS TO IT.
02:06 AM on 06/11/2010
Despite Moron Anderson's (with his phony low voice) distress about the exterior camera what matters much more is the Gama Ray images with which they can see through thick layers of iron and lead.

It was the Bush administration (OF THE GAS & OIL PARTY) that gave BP dispensation in 2007 and $75M liability limit.

IT IS THE REPUBLICAN MAJORITY THAT DID NO OVERSIGHT OVER THE BUSH WHITE HOUSE WHILE THE ***DESTROYED** the Agecies we PAY TO PROTECT OUR Interests!

FEMA Was a highly efficient Agency that helped over 2 million people in the 90s when Hurricaines flattened Florida and Bay Area colapse!
SEC, CFTC: As CHOPPED UP MORTGAGES were Sold up the food chain
Justice Department turnd into a Political weapon.
Consumer Product Safety Commission poison toys.
USDA Poison meet.
Interior Department having sex with Oil company personell.
FCC allowing Media Consolidation so 5 Companies control 90% of what we hear.
Today the Republicans tried to destroy EPA.

Screaming into the Wind!

The biggest Joke was Meet the Press about 2 weeks ago, You could really see how these No Life Coctail Party Bloviators get their "news" from Bloggers.

Bob Woodward, who wouldn't know a Software Engeer from a Mortician (Much less: Mechanical, Firmware, Hardware, Component, or Civil Engineer was outaged that Obama
didn't think of getting Google (A DATA BASE COMPANY OF GARBAGE IN, THEREFORE GARBAGE OUT) To fix the End of a pipe that might as well be running to the center of the earh where No human can go.

Also Moronic is Friedman. WHO TOOK 9 YEARS TO FIGURE OUT THAT WE SHOULD BE CREATING the kind of jobs that do not go off shore..........while being the Darling of the "Free For All Market" by people who FORGOT TO LEAVE ANN Rand behind in Junior High School!
12:46 AM on 06/11/2010
If you don't get out and vote in November for Senators and Congress men and women that support the Clean Energy Bill then you lose the right to ever complain about any environmental issues again.

The bill provides incentives for Clean Energy.

Currently the Republicans are unanimously opposed to the Clean Energy Bill.

What r u thinkin pelican? We should bankrupt our business economy when it's not necessary and ill timed? If you kill business and skyrocket the cost of all of our energy, you are propagating an economic disaster that will make the great depression look like a picnic. Instead of trying to get even with people who create income, why not figure out a way to get intelligence to create new methods of making energy. If you vote in November, vote for people who are not going to bankrupt the country.
Your way makes it so no one can afford the energy. Does that win?
11:19 PM on 06/10/2010
Check beside the issue you think will be the "killer" in the 2010 elections:

_____Corporate and Wall Street bailouts
_____Gulf oil disaster
_____Afghanistan
_____Unemployment
_____Congress "dithering"
_____"Change We Can Believe In???"
_____Washington Disconnects
_____Obama's jeans
_____ALL THE ABOVE!!!!!

I don't see how it can be an issue between the two major parties because although the Republicans are the prime promoters of unlimited deregulation of the oil industry, both parties take money from the industry, and the the "loyal opposition", when they were in the minority and even now when they are in the majority, did not and do not put up any opposition whatsoever. They are both guilty of being in the pocket of the oil companies.
07:43 PM on 06/10/2010
The only thing that makes sense is your last sentence. With that I fully agree.
05:16 PM on 06/10/2010
Unlimited liability, not going to happen, criminal prosecution, not going to happen...show hearings with no real teeth, probably will happen, lame report that comes out in several years, probably will happen. Angry activists will wave signs on the steps of some buildings and nothing will happen. No one will be held accountable. We "main streeters" will pay for this mess with higher taxes and higher gas prices and some politician will be screaming "vote for me if you want real change." We all know the drill baby drill by now.
