The Most Ridiculous Facebook Status Updates From Openbook (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/11/10 03:24 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:45 PM ET

Openbook, a site that highlights Facebook users' most incriminating public status updates, was created in response to Facebook's new, more permissive, and "overly complex" privacy settings.

Openbook's creators insist many users weren't--and aren't--aware just how much they share through Facebook, and how those posts could easily be used against them. "Facebook's bait-and-switch on privacy and their overly complex settings cause many users to post messages intended for their friends to 'everybody,'" Openbook writes. "This privacy-malfunction could have serious consequences if you're looking for a job, applying for college, or trying to get medical insurance."

Openbook allows users to search public Facebook status updates to see what people have shared publicly about such potentially sensitive terms as "herpes" or "cheated." For example, "kill boss" reveals over 50 people who express a similar antipathy to their employers; their bosses could just as easily find that information. Openbook's goal is to encourage Facebook users to take control of their personal data.

We collected some of the most incriminating and outrageous Facebook status updates from Openbook, all of which are open to the public. Of course, some of the posts may be sarcastic, and others pranks.

Some people are just too stupid to live. That is why I believe in Evolution and that some individuals should NOT be permitted to reproduce. The gene pool is polluted enough already.

I just typed in "Mother-in-law" on Openbook and found this! (I hope this woman's mother in law doesn't know about OPENBOOK!!) My mother-in-law is THE cruelest, most vindictive, deceitful and hateful person I know. Thank God I had a real mother! "E" and "A" were sooooooo cheated in the parent/grandparent department respectively. I know this isn't very Christian, but I sincerely hope she gets what she dishes out and that Eternity is really long and hot!!!!!!!

When did everybody decide that broadcasting their lives to the world was an advance in technology? Yeah, the use of the internet to post every last boring detail of our personal lives is an innovation, right up there with penicillin and water purification. And those of us, like myself, who think it's an annoying waste of time that distracts us from all the important things we could be doing with our time, are made to feel like weirdos? Wow.

Not for some people- they truly think their Facebook "friends" (most of whom they barely know) are actually interested in this stuff. I have told family if I EVER go over 200 "friends" they are to forcibly evict me from FB as I don't know that many people any more. I'm a grown up now.

I think whoever wrote this article must be like 70 years old with no sense of humor. These are all jokes/hacked statuses by friends.

Agreed. A number of these status updates are direct quotes from movies. And the one about drowning kittens- come on- would anyone actually post that who meant it?

I think, especially for us Gen-Y'ers, we forget that everyone can see everything, and I mean everything, that we do. We are constantly logged into technology, and are putting our private lives out there for the world to see. While that is all fine and great (sometimes), we do really need to remember to be careful, because what we say can absolutely come back to bite us later, especially in this fragile job market. Gen-Y blog "The Next Great Generation" (http://www.thenextgreatgeneration.com/) speaks to these issues, a kind of for us by us blog. Definitely good to think before hitting post!

Before recently retiring as a high level manager for a relatively large company, I would visit the "Social Networking" sites before going to the trouble of having HR check an applicant's references. Usually I learned WAY more than I wanted to EVER know about the person. It always amazed me how they could not make the connection between the semi- obscene pics of themselves in "compromising positions" and MUCH TOO MUCH other TMI data with NOT getting the job. Talking about cheating on tests, skipping classes regularly, paying people to do term papers, etc. I didn't care a bit about a little wild partying, (who doesn't do it at college?) but when that was ALL they wrote about.plus giving out too much personal info to the world at large, it made you think= WHAT on earth will they do when they get HERE? . .

I think most of these are pranks by people's significant others or friends who somehow gain access to their accounts. That or the end of civilization is near.

Really? The HUFFINGTON POST is getting into the funny facebook status's game? Why don't you guys just leave that to the professionals and report news or something. Most are sarcastic, which is the worst part since it leads me to believe the editors thought it was serious.

I hope several other people have pointed out to Huffington Post that several of these "privacy violations" are clearly created by people attempting to spoof someone else's identity in an attempt to defame their target. In short, they are hoax accounts intended to be public so that they will embarrass someone. HP has simply played into the hoax. Nice work.
