Joran Van Der Sloot Told Chile Police Thief Killed Stephany Flores

Joran Van Der Sloot

LIMA, Peru — Joran van der Sloot told police in Chile that it was an unidentified robber who beat a young woman to death in his hotel room, a killing for which the Dutchman has been charged with murder in Peru.

Peruvian police say Van der Sloot, long suspected in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, has confessed to killing 21-year-old business student Stephany Flores on May 30 after they met playing poker.

But according to a Chilean police report obtained by The Associated Press through Peruvian authorities late Saturday, Van der Sloot gave a different account of events while in custody in neighboring Chile, where he was captured after the killing and quickly extradited.

In the version offered to Chilean investigators, Van der Sloot said he and Flores were surprised in the early morning by two robbers in an apparent assault.

"A man came out of the bathroom blocking the access door with a knife in his hand. On the bed was another man with a gun," the Spanish-language report quotes him as saying. "The man with the knife said to be quiet, but Stephany began talking in a loud voice and he hit her in the face, making her nose bleed."

It also says Van der Sloot told Chilean agents that the previous day, he and Flores had been extorted by apparent police officers who demanded $4,000 and a wristwatch he brought from Thailand.

Chilean police told their Peruvian colleagues that the 22-year-old Dutchman responded in English to their questioning but refused to sign a declaration after learning he would be expelled to Peru.

On Friday, a Peruvian judge ordered Van der Sloot jailed on first-degree murder and robbery charges.

Police in Peru say he confessed to beating Flores to death after she learned details of the Holloway case from his laptop. He allegedly broke her nose, strangled her, threw her to the floor, then emptied her wallet and drove away in her SUV, said Gen. Cesar Guardia, chief of the criminal police. He then traveled south to Chile by bus.

If convicted on the murder and robbery charges, Van der Sloot could get 15 to 35 years in prison.

Van der Sloot's newly hired Peruvian attorney, Maximo Altez, has asked the judge to declare his client's confession void on the grounds it was made in the presence of a defense lawyer appointed by police.

Van der Sloot remains the lone suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean resort island of Aruba.

Peru's criminal police chief said recently that Van der Sloot told interrogators he knows where Holloway's body is, but Aruba's attorney general said Friday he is skeptical Van der Sloot was telling the truth.

A thief killed Stephany...but somehow, Joran made off with all her money. What kind of thief would that be? Will Ferrell? Woody Allen? It's the armed thief who takes the money. Van der Sloot is a sociopath. Thirty-five years in a Peruvian prison will do him good.

"The prison (currently housing van der Sloot) is one of the toughest prisons, along with Lurigancho," Griffith says. "I've been in prisons in over two dozen countries. In fact, I was the lawyer for Billy Hayes from the movie 'Midnight Express,' and the Turkish prison is a Ritz-Carlton compared to this.

"There's about 10,000 prisoners for 3,000 spaces. This and another prison where he's gonna go afterwards, Lurigancho, has dormitories of about 600 prisoners in each. The showers run once a week for 15 minutes. There's only 12 showers. They're in rooms of about 25-by-15 (feet) with about 35 prisoners. About seven or eight sleep on the floor. There's a hole for a toilet.

Only if US prisons were like this! Maybe people in the US would tow the line a little more??

He probably is a killer, but these little romance-starved girls should wake up. You don't go to a motel room with a boy you don't know. I think the blame is 50-50. he should get 1 year probation.

All together now, liberals: "The reason America went to war nine years ago is because we knew that someday minerals would be discovered in them thar hills. In fact, we staged the 9/11 attacks just so we could go there, eventually discover the mineral riches, and then loot the country, all for the profit of Cheney and Haliburton."
Help me out here-are liberals pathetically predictable or predictably pathetic?

Joran's dad kept saying, "No body, no crime." But Joran has to stop being on the scene of the murder then fleeing to avoid capture. I guess the recent death of Joran's dad left him unprotected. All Joran has now are his little lies. It woun't work He;ll copt to the Holloway murder, too. This time, they have him dead to rights, so to speak. He's toast.

If you have any evidence that the suspect's father "kept saying" that phrase, I would like to see it.

The only reference that I can find is the suspect saying that phrase. Second hand hearsay from a liar.

The dad was not as powerful as you seem to think. He ended up jailed for a while. That is not the sign of a powerful person.

Sorry you were attacked. There are so many posters who attack just to be attacking. I guess it makes them feel powerful ... they can be very mean.

I am not always right but it seems logical that our statement is correct, particularly considering what VDS has been claiming.

Anyway, you said it first and I agree with you!

Maybe before attacking they should look at the definition of a sociopath, which part of the disorder includes pathalogical lying. I would consider this type of character to be more of a psychopath though.

The story line from VDS probably was suggested to him by Pinotaco in the period after the murder and before the capture in Chili. Be nice if Taco gets wrapped into this for conspiracy.

Those security cameras tell no lies. He is as guilty as sin! Hopefully he will reveal where Natalee Holloway's body is buried before the other prisoners extinguish his life in prison.

The best part of telling the truth is that it's much harder to remember lies.

He's told 4 or 5 different stories about the Holloway matter-why would anyone trust him?
12:03 PM on 06/14/2010
Yeah, right. He must be the unluckiest man in the world. Totally innocent, but closely connected to the scene of two murders. I'm sure that he spent his life pointing at one of his brothers and crying over the body of a dead cat and accusing them of the crime. And his mother punished the brothers. Psychopath.
