Ted Kennedy FBI Files Released

ANDREW MIGA and GLEN JOHNSON   06/14/10 11:36 PM ET   AP

Ted Kennedy Fbi Documents
The FBI announced Monday that it would post some 2,000 pages of previously secret pages about Ted Kennedy on the agency's website.

WASHINGTON — For decades after gunmen shot down his brothers, Sen. Edward Kennedy lived under constant assassination threats of his own, sometimes chillingly specific, as he became a target for extremist rage, previously private FBI documents disclosed Monday.

Five years after President John F. Kennedy was killed and shortly after Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was shot, one letter warned that the third brother was next: "Ted Kennedy number three to be assassinated on Oct. 25, 1968. The Kennedy residence must be well protected on that date."

Nearly two decades later, in 1985, the threats continued, this time including the Republican president as well as the liberal Democratic senator: "Brass tacks, I'm gonna kill Kennedy and (President Ronald) Reagan, and I really mean it."

Releasing 2,352 pages from Kennedy's FBI file, many of them concerning threats over the years, the agency said on its website: "These threats originated from multiple sources, including individuals, anonymous persons and members of radical groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, 'Minutemen' organizations and the National Socialist White People's Party."

Some of the threats prompted investigations, some resulted in warnings to Kennedy or local law enforcement authorities. There is no indication any attempts were carried out.

In 1977, the FBI even looked into allegations that Sirhan Sirhan – the man who assassinated Robert Kennedy – had attempted to hire a fellow prisoner to kill Edward Kennedy. The prisoner, who was housed next to Sirhan for 18 months, told the FBI he was offered $1 million and a car but declined.

President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Robert Kennedy died on June 6, 1968, a day after he was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Their deaths cast a long shadow on the youngest brother's life, and prompted fears he, too, would be targeted by an assassin's bullet. Indeed, Kennedy wrote in his memoir "True Compass" that after his brothers were killed he was easily startled by loud sounds and would hit the deck whenever a car backfired.

He died last year at 77 after fighting brain cancer. Kennedy's widow, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, declined comment on the document release through a spokesman.

Most of the documents released Monday are about death threats and extortion attempts against the Massachusetts Democrat.

The release had been highly anticipated by historians, scholars and others interested in the life and long public career of one of America's most prominent and powerful politicians. The Associated Press and other media organizations requested the documents through Freedom of Information Act requests.

There is relatively little on a major controversy, Kennedy's car accident on Chappaquiddick Island off the coast of Massachusetts that killed Mary Jo Kopechne, a young woman who had been a worker in Robert Kennedy's campaign.

The files do show that the FBI was told almost immediately of the accident and Kennedy's involvement, but authorities kept his identity quiet at the start.

The Boston FBI office relayed word to Washington headquarters at 2:45 p.m. EDT on July 19, 1969, after being notified by Police Chief Dominick Arena in Edgartown, Mass.

The advisory said that Kennedy – the vehicle's driver – was uninjured.

It also said, "Stated fact Senator Kennedy was driver is not being revealed to anyone."

Kopechne drowned after Kennedy drove the car in which she was riding off a bridge into a pond. He swam to safety, leaving Kopechne in the car. Kopechne, 28, was found dead in the submerged car's back seat 10 hours later. Kennedy, then 37, pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and got a suspended sentence and probation.

In his memoir, Kennedy wrote that his actions on Chappaquiddick were inexcusable. He said he was afraid, "made terrible decisions" and had to live with the guilt the rest of his life.

Kopechne's death also caught the attention of the Nixon administration and one of the eventual Watergate conspirators.

One file shows FBI Deputy Director C.D. DeLoach reporting an Oct. 17, 1969, call from John Dean, then assistant to the deputy attorney general.

"He stated that both the deputy attorney general and attorney general are anxious to discreetly find out if Mary Jo Kopechne (deceased) had visited Greece in August 1968," DeLoach writes in his report. John Mitchell was attorney general at the time.

Dean supplied Kopechne's passport number. The subsequent report about the results of the check on any visit to Greece was blacked out.

Meanwhile, the FBI said Monday it has additional documents on threats to Kennedy, possibly thousands more pages, that it plans to make public once the agency finishes reviewing them.

Kennedy family members were given a chance to review and to raise objections to the documents before they were released Monday, the FBI said.

Dennis Argall, assistant section chief of the FBI's record information dissemination section, declined to specify how much time the family was given. He would only say the family was given an "appropriate" time to review the documents.

The family has no legal power to keep information withheld. But the FBI does consider privacy concerns on a case-by-case basis, he said.

Standing up to power, standing up to the bigots, standing up to the white racists and corporatists whle standing for the American worker will get you murderous attention in the USA. That is a fact. Mr. Kennedy is a hero and a man who like all men made errors in his life. His place in history is much cleaner and brighter than the likes of Cheney, any Bush, or any Republican will ever be.

It used to sadden me that the mere mention of the Kennedy name unleashed some of the ugly things we see from the right, as evidenced by some of the comments here. One on the left could, if they were consumed by the same irrational hate, say some pretty ugly things about the heros of the right as well. Perhaps some have, but the fact is that hate seems to be the first and most constant instinct of the right. Yes, there are some haters on the left one must concede. We generally disown our haters and they usually nominate and elect theirs. That's a basic difference that reduces the saddness referenced at the beginning of this entry.

Ted make mistakes in his personal life - he was human - but you cannot discount or discredit nearly 50 years of committed - compassionate public service - He fought the battles that the little guy and the middle class couldn't fight for themselves - he believed that America could be a better place - and he put his life on the line everyday to serve - our country was blessed to have this lion - RFK and JFK were exceptional and we lost them too soon. Ted could have walked away and led a much easier life but he choose to fight the good fight until the end.

Sainhood seems excessive. Instead, perhaps we could examine the life of Sen. Kennedy in its totality. He was a was a deeply flawed individual who promoted the rights of the common people and access to health care. There are plenty of valid criticisms of the man and a discussion of what he could have done differently could serve as a useful object lesson.

Sainthood no - he had issues - as we all do - but when I hear talk of the contributions and body of work of Political leaders over the last 50 years he has to be near the top. He's demonized from the left very often but was known to be committed to compromise to move many major issues forward. He was no ones puppet and was proud to be called a liberal.

If you have seen the movie, "Thirteen Days" it reminds us that the Kennedys saved us from nuclear holocaust, and their assassinations, JFK's only a year later, were their ironic reward; how tragic.

Ted was the last of a breed of politician that we may well never see again. He had so many advantages and he was dedicated to making sure that the working people of this country got a fair shake. He believed "he served the public", the public did not serve him. I have watched this man for a good part of my own life, work hard to make sure that others had decent housing, medical care, and access to education. He was criticized heartedly by his foes, but he never let it deter him from pushing forward. He had many of his own demons to overcome and he did that too. So Teddy, we miss you and we will never forget you or your service to all.
12:49 PM on 06/15/2010
The only thing he served was his ego and a few years from now it will be Ted who?

The Kennedy's meant well and paid with it with their lives. Ted watched his step. Sad that in this country, if you are for the people and against the wrong, you will lose your life. I heard that Bill Clinton is the bastard son of Joe Kennedy, while he resided in Arkansas and his mother was a
maid. Farfetched, think not. See how Bill was preferred, got the best school versus his brother!
See the hooded eyes, hair! Who knows. We won't ever know.

True, Joe was a crook. JFK won the election like GWB did. However, he had good ideas
and paid for it with his life, so did his brother, who after the CIA. Came to light then that the prez does not run this country!

Ridiculous angry bigoted men who are damn lucky to have any freedoms at all are so close to really screwing things up for the rest of us. This is so sad to learn. Kennedy was such a great person and politician. Such grace, wit, and breeding.

If anyone is interest, five of his speeches are in the 100 off all time on www.americanrhetoric.com. I highly recommend the one on the separation of church and state, "Faith, Truth and Tolerance in America" given to Liberty University in 1983 on the invitation of Jerry Falwell (who thought the audience would cream Kennedy) instead, he won them over early with his charm and so decisively made his case, they cheered him throughout and at the end. It illustrates his brilliance as being even above John's in my view. He just happened to come last, and who could live up to that. Every American should hear that speech. In particular ones who forget the importance of the church/state issue.

The Kennedy MEN were the last politicians in America whom actually tried to stand for something OTHER than BIG Business, BIG OIL, greed and the status quo. Each, truly tried to make a real difference for the average American. I just finished a book; "Farewell America"- by James Hepburn.
It can be downloaded online for free (pdf.)

04:29 AM on 06/15/2010
Flaws will occur in human beings from time to time. Let not those flaws be the total measure. Many fall to the instinctual versus the enlightened (boy do I have a story to tell you). These men were far from perfect, but in moments where they held power to do great things they leaned towards greatness. At least that is what is said, I did not know the men. I have read and heard their words and opinions over an expanse of time. I deem them worthy men, and many agree.

Besides, if we were perfect, it would look nothing like now. Can you blame the person who falls on the ice for not having better balance?
