"The NRA will continue to fight for its right to speak out in defense of the Second Amendment. Any efforts to silence the political speech of NRA members will, as has been the case in the past, be met with strong opposition.”

No one, particularly this bill, is proposing to in anyway limit anyone's free speech-- this bill only shows who is contributing the BIG bucks

the little bucks people remain anonymous

what this bill does do is expose the big bucks cowards who SMEAR others and LIE and hide like cowards so they cannot be rebutted or indicted for hypocrisy or lunacy by the saner of us

Yeah, and BP has publicly pledged to overhaul all of it's operation procedures, clean up and fairly compensate gulf coast victims of the oil spill, and make sure that when the cow jumps over the moon, we actually get a picture of it this time.

Campaign donations from lobbyists should be outlawed in toto. Period. No legislator should be allowed to accept money from industries they are supposed to regulate. Or, if they do, they must excuse themselves from voting on such legislation because it's a blatant conflict of interest. Until lawmakers and lobbyists get out of the same bed, this institutionalized corruption will persist and your elected representatives will not be representing you. Furthermore, the NRA must have something to hide if it wants an exception to the proposed disclosure law.

i have a better idea.

We deputize the NRA to be the militia that the 2nd amendment calls for, and make them the government agency that makes sure all gun owners are registered with the militia and that gun safety is taught to EVERYONE.

Then, since they would now be a government agency, they would lose the right to lobby the government OR take sides in elections.

NRA lobby problem solved.
2nd amendment controversy ended

This isn't a second amendment issue ... it's about how corporations and special interests control our government. Thank you Diane Feinstein for bringing this pathetic twisting of our democracy into light ... and damn any Democrat who supports this offensive "payoff" for the bribes and bullying that the NRA forces on us all deserves to get thumped in November and replaced by a representative with a conscious and a spine.

Those who want to purchase ads, fund PAC's, or directly donate to political causes and candidates should be required to disclose how much and to whom they're giving. The SCOTUS recently lifted the ceiling off limits, but their ruling does NOT prohibit disclosure, or exemption from regulations on full documentation of such donations.

Since many "grass-roots" organizations are funded, promoted and organized stealthy by special interest groups, the only means to know what agendas truly mean is by having information on major contributors. Many ads, websites, and literature (press items) are misleading and deceptive.

It has been said and repeated: FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!

Fanned.

Curious that an Eastern European would be among the few to so clearly state the issue. Nostrovia!

Why is the NRA framing this as an attempt to deny it free speech when the intent of the bill was, as I understand it, to compell it to identify itself when it speaks? Why doesn't the NRA want us to know when it's the NRA that's "speaking" with its money?

The NRA weilds Far too much power! More "commentary to give you paws..."; thoughts on the NRA through the eyes of brilliant dog!

This is the core example why its poisenous to have interest groups donate money to political parties. Bribery, h0stage situations, and the citizens will always be the screvvd.

Thanks to a ultra right Supreme Court, we will see more and more of this.

What about the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, ACLU, AARP, etc? It's a double edged sword, let it cut both ways.
03:39 AM on 06/16/2010
We should start a National Not-corporation Association and bribe, I mean lobby congress to work in the interest of the citizens instead of the corporations. It could be the same form as the NRA nonprofit, non-partisan with a low membership fee and if it gets enough members there is some possibility to turn things around. The NRA has only four million members, it is a lot, but hardly more than 1% of the population.

Check your facts, more small arms were exported during the Clinton administration, no surprise there given that he's from Arkansas, than the entire twelve years preceeding him.

Almost everyone in congress is a who-re. That's not partisan poison, just poison. Drink up.
07:48 AM on 06/16/2010
So Michael Moore (a member of the NRA) is also a racist, militia member, poorly endowed, and a bully?

There are issue crossers everywhere and for many reasons.

The NRA has earned most of the criticism from the Liberals.
01:38 PM on 06/16/2010
A racist? Certainly not.
A militia member? Eh, could be.
Poorly endowed? Who cares.
A bully? Certainly.

and once again "the perfect can't be enemy of the good" excuse to keep the corporate money flowing in congress and pass mediocre legislation and dress it as "reasonable compromise".

So now congress needs explicit permission from the NRA for matters unrelated to guns? incredible.
01:36 PM on 06/16/2010
Incredible indeed.

I am a progressive liberal gun owner, I believe in the second amendment but not as a religion.
I think the NRA is anti-democratic institution that routinely lies to it's members and interferes to the detriment in our society and I hope for it's failure when it's members ever wake up to it's lies.

What about MoveOn.org? Or the NEA? Or SEIU?

I will further, I believe the NRA is as close to a terrorist organization, and any we have in the United States. I support the 2nd Amendment, but not the NRA's rhetoric and anti-government stand. Why is The Senators and Congresspeople afraid of the NRA? They should be disbanded. Noone is advocating taking guns away from law bidding citizens. There are many foreign donating to the NRA, that is why they do not want to release the name of their donors.
