Of course, none of that Chinese crap is any more environmentally conscious than the 4x4 used to drive all of it into the wild. The only differences between the outdoor gear sold at Wal Mart and REI are the labels.

"Everything from walking jackets to tents are made from non-sustainable, climate-changing oil-based chemicals. Whilst you may appreciate being kept dry in the midst of a downpour you probably aren't aware that the production of your jacket results in highly polluting toxic waste."

Weell...bullocks!!! I guess it's back too hunting Deers for their pelts again...Not really folks. I still have my moccasins and jungle bots the military gave me. I guess I can dump the tent and make some cool lean-too's like on Man-vs-wild? As long as I can enjoy the great outdoors guilt free again someday? That would really be nice..

Great article. I hope all of those touting stopping our "oil addictions" read it. A little reality check.

All those nylon tents that the campers use, all the nylon rope the climbers use, all the nylon bushings and the grease in those bicycle axles - all from oil. Not to mention how much energy is used in the production of all those aluminum products, from water bottles to bicycle frames.

If you all want to stop using oil and coal then you will need go back to living how people lived in the early 1800's. Of course then you will be back to whaling (for their oil) and hunting buffalo to extinction.

It's not like we have a choice in the matter. Oil is a finite resource that we will soon run out of. We need other energy sources before that happens or we will be in serious trouble
