Americans Want Democrats, Not Republicans To Control Next Congress: Poll

Congress

ALAN FRAM and TREVOR TOMPSON   06/16/10 02:38 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — There's encouraging news for Democrats battling to retain control of Congress in this fall's elections, with the party holding a slender edge in public trust for shepherding the economy and slightly more people saying their finances are healthy, according to a new poll.

The reeling economy remains people's top concern, according to an Associated Press-GfK Poll conducted earlier this month, making public attitudes about it crucial for both parties' hopes in November. The good news for Democrats: By a margin of 47 percent to 42 percent, people trust them more than Republicans to guide the economy, and 64 percent – slightly more than in April – say their household budgets are in good shape.

In addition, people want Democrats to win control of Congress by a 46 percent to 39 percent margin. That is the second straight month in which Democrats have held a delicate advantage on that question since April, when 44 percent preferred Republicans and 41 percent picked Democrats.

"When Clinton was in office, we were doing exceptionally well. Then Republicans got in office and we are where we are," said Daniel Lowery, 23, a warehouse worker from Fostoria, Ohio, who wants Democrats to continue leading the House and Senate.

Even so, there's plenty in the poll to encourage Republicans, and nothing that contradicts many analysts' views that the GOP has a solid shot of capturing majorities of one or both chambers of Congress.

The public's anti-Washington mood remains robust, with 55 percent saying they want a new member of Congress – bad news for Democrats with more incumbents to defend. While Republicans strongly prefer a fresh face, Democrats are divided about evenly over whether they want to re-elect their current representatives and 6 in 10 independents want someone new – all ominous signs for congressional Democrats.

In addition, a low 24 percent approve of how Congress is doing its job, a hefty 72 percent still say the nation's economy is in poor condition, and 77 percent consider huge federal budget deficits a top concern.

"It's just my conservative views on taxes, on how involved government gets in people's lives," said Jessica Iskander, 25, a homemaker from Hartly, Del., who wants Republicans running Congress.

People also remain upset about the anemic job market and the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. President Barack Obama gets mediocre marks for handling the economy, unemployment, the deficit and the oil spill, numbers that over time could rub off on congressional Democrats.

"They're leading us down the wrong road," Raymond Beard, 60, a minister from Crowville, Ala., said of Democrats. "They're doing a lot of things against what I was raised to believe, such as going to a socialist-type government where the government takes care of people instead of people taking care of themselves."

Other questions in the poll point to Democratic advantages.

Congressional Democrats get a thumbs-up from 38 percent, modestly more than the 32 percent who approve of how Capitol Hill Republicans are doing their jobs. When it comes to performance on major issues, Democrats have taken a solid advantage over Republicans on handling health care and have narrowed the GOP edge on defense and immigration.

"You have to spend all this money," John Gillies, 71, of Houston, a Democrat in the oil and gas business, said of why he favors Democratic efforts to revive the economy. "If you try to balance the budget at this point you'll break it, and you have to tax people like me who have money."

Since the April 20 Gulf oil rig explosion triggered a massive leak that remains unplugged, the oil spill has rocketed to such prominence that 87 percent consider it a major concern, trailing only the economy's 91 percent.

Fifty-two percent disapprove of Obama's handling of the crisis, a weak number that parallels the public's dissatisfaction with President George W. Bush's performance in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath in 2005. The one saving grace for Obama – the public is even less happy with BP, with 83 percent condemning its effort to stop its leaking well.

The AP-GfK Poll involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,044 randomly chosen adults and was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications from June 9-14. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

What is a "Compassionate Conservative" without the modifier ? He/she supports the HAVES AND HAVEMORES (Bush's base) and the New World Order which thrives on CRISIS. Destitute people are turning on those responsible for creating fear and insecurity so they will be amenable to a North American Union and fascist dictatorship in exchange for a slice of bread. I have not dismissed the possibility of sabotage to create an oil crisis to add to open borders, adulterated foods, voting fraud, illegal wars, derivative swindles, etc. It is the ugly head of a vast right-wing conspiracy and the GOP is its eyes and ears.

I don't believe in polls, they are like statistics, the maker can guide the direction to his or hers conclusion. If I asked the right questions, at the right time, I could get people to say they wanted little green men from Mars running the House, Hobbits running the Senate and a Giraffe running the presidency.

It does not really matter. The Republicans and Democrats are just 2 wings of a one party system. Both raise taxes, both increase regulations and take away freedoms, both protect big corporations, both wage wars. Both parties throw the average person a crumb, to lead them to believe government is working for them. Both parties are incompetent. Katrina proved for the Republicans, Deep Water Horizon proves if for the Dems. It is mind boggling to hear the Feds say the state cannot do x to clean up oil or protect the wetland, because they need an environmental impact study. How insane.

Americans want money out of politics and all the incumbents thrown out with new politicians. Both Democrats and Republicans have sold out the United States and Americans.

Republicans love Palin. That says it all. Next, is that buffoon, Beck...who cries at the drop of a hat. And Rush, who is so full of hatred and venom that he hisses when he talks. And, Hannity. The hysterical one...who spreads rumors before he has facts, spitting out lies on FOX daily. What a travesty these people are! The "Tea Party" picked Sarah as their 'leader'...thank God. I hope she runs for president in 2012. What a joy that would be. She would get the vote of the ignorant many, many Republicans in this country..but she could NEVER beat Obama.

I really hope there's a lot of 3rd party voting this year.
Lots of people know the repubs won't help them, so they won't vote for them. But if they aren't sure about the Dem, they might not vote.

Voting 3rd party may be throwing your vote away, but less so if you vote for a Repub or Dem you aren't sure of. A large amount of support for a 3rd party is probably one of the few things to make these people stand up and take notice.

"...leading us down the wrong road..." the man said? Where in the he!! has he been for the past 30 years of trickle down economics of tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations that almost destroyed the middle class. He thinks President Obama is leading us down the wrong road after Bush/Cheney? Are you kidding me...

How can one ask someone from Alabama what they think of Congressional Dems and expect to get a well-thought out answer?

What people need to understand is that in 2012, kids that are 16-17 will be able to vote. It will be 4 years under Obama and they will look at things as have being pretty good. If Dems continue to capture the youth, Republicans will no longer be considered a competitive party in 6-10 years (that's if these tea baggers and extremist don't do something stupid that causes a class/race war).

They will do whatever they think it takes to prevent Obama or any other Democrat from being elected. Their days are numbered and they know it. LIke any other losing group or individual they are panicking and making lots of mistakes.

Based on this man's comments, he has no earthly idea how to define socialism. I've found this to be true of many Americans who use the word more frequently since January 20, 2009, 12 NOON. I can say though, that the rw has waged a successful propaganda campaign to convince a significant number of Americans that something that ISN'T happening IS happening.
