Colbert Proposes 'Freedom Muffins' As Oil Spill Strains U.S.-U.K. Relations (VIDEO)

As fallout from the BP oil spill continues to strain relations between the U.S. and England, Stephen Colbert has proposed re-naming English muffins "freedom muffins" until the nations smooth things over.

On Monday's edition of The Colbert Report, the political satirist went on to use details of Saturday's infamous U.S. versus England World Cup match -- which ended in a 1-1 tie, but was curiously lauded as a U.S. win by the New York Post -- as emblematic of the more adversarial terms by which both nations have been corresponding since the spill.

"Let's just say the oil was a ball, and our coastline was a goal," Colbert joked.

The new muffin moniker was Colbert's poke at the conservative euphemism used for French fries as the result of anti-French sentiment during and after the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Love this idea and love Steven Colbert, as well as Jon Stewart.

Ha ha ha, this is a great one... and I also came up with the same idea for perhaps similar reasons. See http://greenideafactory.blogspot.com/2010/06/freedom-muffins-usa-government-aided-by.html

Hey Stephen...Thanks for stealing my joke about changing the name of English Muffins to Freedom Muffins.
Yes...I know it was just a coincidence and there's nothing new under the sun and we can't blame Milton Berle and trying to claim exclusivity for something written on the internet is like a bureaucrat trying to keep government secrets from leaking by storing them on a laptop but I posted this on several forums ( eons.com, hbo.com/billmaher ) in response to Rep. Boehner's demand that Paul McCartney apologize for expressing his gratitude that America again has a president "who knows what a library is". Congratulations on your taste in humor and continued success.

What Colbert was doing was mocking the Repubs who after the Iraq war started, renamed French Fries, Freedom Fries.
If anyone takes him seriously they've proved his point.
