DePaul Offers Degree In Predicting The Future

A new degree option at DePaul University in Chicago has a distinct focus on the future -- the school says it is the first to offer a master's degree in predictive analysis, a part of data mining that helps businesses forsee and make decisions.

PCWorld has more on the degree:

[DePaul's] program aims to teach students the technical skills to do computer-based data mining, including advanced data analysis and the ability to handle large data sets. The degree will require students to take marketing courses as well, which should help them better match their data analysis to the needs of end users.

"It's not a theoretical statistics degree. It will focus on hands-on use of applications," she said, adding that students will learn about Web analytics, Web data mining, Monte Carlo methods, image processing and database management.

In general, data mining is becoming a more popular topic of study at schools across the country, with Stanford, Central Connecticut University and the University of Central Florida offering degrees and certificates in the field.
