I was pleasantly surprised by the beginning of this vid, but he fell back into the trap all the coaches do...sometimes its about more than money.

You are absolutely correct, but what is your point?

Tom Ferry, totally enjoyed your live video event. Your energy is contagious. Great advice.
I loved that you cursed... made you more relatable. Gonna buy your book. I've been living in
the past, too. Everything I do seems to turn to shit, now. I'm another real estate professional...
used to having money. Can't handle being broke, life sucks, blah, blah, blah. I'm going to get
up off my ass and do something. Thanks.

Who needs to be told these things?

Here's my life coaching plan for everyone:

10 Write down a big list of stuff you need to get done
20 Do those things
30 If (not dead) then goto 10

It's really not that hard.

Let's add one more thing to Tom's ideas of our addictions: Using cynicism and false pride to justify not accepting help from others.

True, there are coaches out there that suck and just take your money. I've come across many. Then there are coaches like this guy and thousands others who can read people, truly feel their pain and longing for a better life, and know how to guide them to that life. There are a lot of people living lives of frustration and sadness and they are looking for some support and new ideas. And the people who help them deserve to make a good living.

Soooo glad to know that those of you who have left cynical nasty message here have perfect lives...are 100% fulfilled...and have no need to improve any area of your life. I agree that you have no reason to listen to or respect others' opinions or accept their help. But in case you ever do become open to self improvement, I'd start with learning some kindness and empathy for others.

"Soooo glad to know that those of you who have left cynical nasty message here have perfect lives...are 100% fulfilled...and have no need to improve any area of your life. "

Sooo glad to know you don't succumb to any logical fallacies.

Just because you're not impressed with a life coach doesn't mean that you're not open to self improvement. In my case, it's precisely BECAUSE I value self-improvement that I push back on snake oil salesmen who offer hollow answers to complex questions.

I criticize Amway too. Doesn't mean I'm claiming to be rich. I'm claiming that they won't make you rich.

There's a reason people have to keep going back to life coaches for the same obvious advice. Because it's about emotional manipulation and not education.

The vapidness of these life coaching seminars is apparent by the knee-jerk defensiveness of the adherents. If it's so helpful and great, you guys really should just be able to laugh off any criticism and move on.

Instead, consistently, those who defend life coaches respond to criticism with evasions and personal attacks, including question reversal ("oh yeah? well...what have YOU done that's so great?") motive impugning ("why do you feel the need to criticize? are you venting some other frustration?") ad-hominem attacks ("you're obviously just a hate-filled person who's never done anything positive with your life...yeah, I'm getting that from one HP post") and the like.

In a nutshell, they are (according to the coach):

1) The Addiction to opinions of other people. As a society, we're addicted to what others think about us and how others' views of the world affect us.

2) The Addiction to drama. Some people are drawn to and consumed by any event or situation that occupies their thoughts and fills their mind with negativity, which often brings attention to them in unproductive ways.

3) The Addiction to the past. These people have an unhealthy attachment to events or situations that have occurred in the past. They're stuck in how things used to be.

4) The Addiction to worry. This addiction is comprised of all the negative and self-defeating thoughts that make us anxious, disturbed, upset and stressed, that hold us back in life.

Oh good, I dont have any of those addictions. I do however, think that religion balances people, even tho many naysayers say it is for the weak. I just dont happen to like those who are boastful and full of themselves. No one wants to be around people like that. I think the more good you can do for others, the better your life will be.

On a day to day basis, you make so many choices and you really need to think about others/the big picture, instead of selfishly reveling in your own stuff. The "its all about me" thing is so obnoxious.

It can be as simple as letting someone go ahead of you at the supermarket, or complimenting someone. Done that lately? I do things like that in public, and people are surprised. I wish they werent so surprised. Spreading negativity does nothing good for a person or those around them--its actually detrimental.

Is a "coach" something they call a person who doesn't have a degree in psychology? I don't ask to be insulting - I'm sure some people give sound advice without credentials. In fact, I'm pretty clear-headed and perceptive. What do these "coaches" earn?

Most of 'em don't make diddly. A few make big bux.

Some "coaches" have degrees in psychology, or MSW's, and come from a background of being therapist. But they weren't happy with the money they were making.

So rather than join Amway or Mona Vie or some other godforsaken MLM, they hear the siren song of coaching as a career.

The novelty has worn off, and coaching's 15 minutes are almost up. There's an ever increasing number of coaches changing a dwindling pool of potential customers - doubly so with the recession.

HuffPo is a great place for coaches, because it is a widely read site, and you can write blogs here anytime you want, because HuffPo doesn't pay for content. So a lot of coaches come here, trying to drum up business by "sharing" from their pool of deep wisdom.

In a nutshell, it's a business full of social parasites who want to get rich off of your perception of having problems that you think they can help you solve. It could only become a phenomenon in a society that has lost its way.

Ya i completely agree, that and all the esoteric nonsense they preach (not that I don't understand it, i even agree with alot of it). The thing is someone has to change from within you can't make them, and when someone does decide to change they don't need to hear the esoteric stuff anymore they need realistic plan and things to do to make the change. I mean I don't need someone telling me I can be all I can be, I know that already I just the how to get from A to B. They just want to give you a once size fits all and doesn't really apply to your specific needs since they really weren't listening to you in the first place because they're eyes are glazed over because you just gave them 2000 bucks and they're ecstatic and they're thinking about how they're gonna spend your money... Haha I don't know if thats the truth or not I sure there are some who are for real (like the ones who did this kinda of stuff back before it was seen as a way to get rich), most are snake oil salesman...
