Satiristas! Bill Maher, George Carlin, And More Talk Satire And The State Of Comedy (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/20/10 02:04 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:50 PM ET

In the book iSatiristas!, comedian Doug Stanhope tells interviewer (and fellow comedian) Paul Provenza that to him, "funny" is sitting around a table with comics making each other laugh. This book is not necessarily a recreation of that, but instead feels like what would happen if 60 of the best satirists sat around a giant table and talk about being funny.

While the interviews conducted by Provenza are not presented as an oral history (a la Live From New York) it never feels like 60 separate sections. They all contribute to the goal at hand, working together to shed some light on the state of comedy and satire's effect (or lack thereof) on the world's view of itself.

The chapters flow together beautifully, giving you the feeing that you're a fly on the wall at a comedy summit. It's almost as if you're witnessing each comic actually build on each other's thoughts and even respond to one another. When Jay Leno talks about playing it safe because his main duty is to entertain, Janeane Garofalo fires right back, calling him out for not taking risks. But alas, as they're not actually sitting around a table, all the comics get the opportunity to speak their minds and justify their views.

Packaged together with the photographs of Dan Dion, the book is a must have for any comedy fan. Sorry for sounding like the back of a book jacket there, but it really is good. We've collected some of the best quotes from some of the best satirists featured for you - complete with Dion's fantastic photographs.

"I mean, I kind of speak out in certain ways, you know, because everybody that runs for power is always questionable.  Anybody.  Obama is questionable.  I know everybody around me thinks he's fucking great, be he's questionable, because he wanted to be president in the first place.  And anybody who wants to be president, well.. you've gotta question that.  What is that?  And you've gotta fucking needle away at that."

As critical as the satirists are, the danger comes when they start taking themselves too seriously. Sometimes Maher crosses that line. Stewart and Colbert do not.

Humor is a matter of personal preference. I don't get the three stooges. They've never made me laugh in my life. Still, it's clear to me by all the men that love them - they are indeed funny. I don't think most comedians suffer from the pagglicio (sp) syndrome. And those that do, I still don't think that in particular would make them unpleasant. It's hard to pick a favorite, but the one who always makes me laugh and makes me think is Bill Maher. Comedians in general are precious to me. Love Patton Oswalt, Richard Pryor was the best, no, Lenny, no, not Lenny. There is no easy favorite. I give up! I appreciate them all. Wanda Sykes and Louie C.K.!!! They're all so good to us.

What, no Sarah Palin? I thought this was a book on political satire?

She's like Stephen Colbert's Ed McMahon, or she should be.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone got theirs with the Muslim thr*eat. Oh, I love to make fun of others ... but when it comes to us ... well we turn and run and hide and cry.

Bill Hicks and Paul Krassner must be included in any deep look into satire.

Fortunately, if you listen to some of his stuff, it's like he's commenting on what's happening now. The "Puppets" bit, for instance, or "The Presidential Briefing."

Bill's still zingin' em, God bless him. His stuff is still relevant. When he's talking about "President Bush," just forget which one.

My two cents, this book was created to not pick out who is funny and who is not. If that was the case, then they would have never asked Leno anything.

But more so what comedians think of comedy today.
(atleast that is what I got from the article.)

And while I'll admit I find some of these guys funnier than others... The question remains... "What is sex in space like?"
(ps - you'll only get that if you are a Colbert fan)

The editor of this only picked Janeane to represent women in comedy? WTF

Sure, drag out the tattooed hippy to wave our sanitary napkins. That's great. Janeane, God I love her, but she should have been backed up in this little HP slideshow by some of the other Greats. There is more than one woman involved with comedy.

George Carlin and Bill Hicks were my favorite comedians - the only one who makes me laugh consistently these days is Patton.

I miss the old comedians. The guys with timing like a thompson submachine gun. Henny Youngman. My god he had the sweetest persona, but he could verbally flay someone with the skill of a trained butcher carving steaks, and he did without getting blood on his shoes. These guys understood satire and sarcasm like no one I know today. Chris Rock was looking good until he discovered he was black and decided to spend a decade doing comedy around that and that only. Dave Chapelle was rocketing to those heights until he fell apart, and forgot it was just business. Bill maher is so brushing greatness. He will be there. Richard Prior was the King of comedy as far as Im concerned he was the whole package. Eddie Murphy could already be there if he would of rubbed the chip off his shoulder a little sooner. George Carlin is a comic god. Steven Wright is an annoying @ss (just had to throw that in there because of an earlier post).

I saw Henny tell this one: A hooker walks up to me and says, "I'll do anything you want for $50." I said, "OK, paint my house."

Don't forget Jack Benny. He could get a laugh with just a well-timed pause, a gesture, or a look.
