Manute Bol's Philanthropy As Great An Achievement As Prolific NBA Career

Though several news outlets had reported on Manute Bol's acute kidney disease in the past months, it still came as a shock to much of the world when the 7 foot 6 former NBA player died in Virginia at the age of 47.

Bol's height gave him a domineering presence on the court as well as premier shot-blocking ability (for comparison, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is also listed at 7 foot 6).

However, few who didn't keep up with Bol's activities after his NBA career are aware of his consistent efforts to improve conditions for those in his homeland of Sudan. In fact, Bol spent nearly his entire fortune, and went bankrupt, donating money to organizations that were working in Darfur.

As his former teammates discuss in the video below, Bol had never heard of America or the game of basketball until he was 18. Overwhelmed by an amount of wealth unheard of where he came from, Bol dedicated his life to charitable endeavors in Sudan.

With Alliance for the Lost Boys, Bol worked to bring medical assistance and education to Sudan. Just last year, Bol was busy raising money to build a school when he contracted Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a skin disease that would ultimately take his life.

Bol also became politically active, campaigning for Sudanese politicians that he believed would help promote peace.

An amazing athlete and person. Yet, a significant percent of today's most celebrated "athletes" comprise an eclectic mix of adulterers, murderers, rapists, drug addicts, and assorted felons. And I'm PROUD to be an AMERICAN.....where at least I know I'm free.....

He was an amazing man. A self-less humanitarian who wasn't completely recognized for all of his good work. I read an article about him years ago & came to greatly admire him. In fact, HE was one of the 1st people to approach and meet with President George Bush to discuss the growing threat of Islamic extremism (as he's witnesses it's growth in Africa)... and it was met with dismissiveness. May he rest in Peace...

People throw around words like courage and hero, especially in sports.

Here was a true courageous hero. And a man of compassion in an age of selfishness.

Thank you, Manute.

I was lucky enough to have seen Manute play (Warriors). It almost appeared as if the shorter but bulkier playrs didn't want to run into him, he was so thin he looked like he could snap in two. But the crowd would yell "ma NOOT" over and over (at first I thought they were booing, when in fact it was a loving shout out to this giant of a man). Manute never, ever forgot his roots and did quietly such a service. His death is sad for the world. What a lovely human being.

What a loss. In a world where Lady Gaga can pull in headlines at will, here was a man who actually put his money and his life where his mouth was and worked to improve the lives of others. He'll never get the credit he deserves for the actions of his life, and the world is much, much poorer for his loss.
