NEW YORK — The New York Times has named Arthur S. Brisbane as its new public editor.
The newspaper's announcement appeared on its media blog Monday.
In his 34 years in journalism, Brisbane has been the publisher and editor of The Kansas City Star and a senior vice president for the former Knight Ridder Inc. He also worked as a reporter and editor at The Washington Post. He got his start at The Glen Cove Guardian on Long Island.
The newspaper's public editor functions as an independent voice and responds to comments and concerns from the public about the newspaper's coverage and about journalism.
Brisbane replaces Clark Hoyt, who had been the Washington editor at Knight Ridder before taking the public editor job. Hoyt's three-year term ended earlier this month.
