Motorola Droid 2 vs. Droid VIDEO: How Is The New Droid Different?

First Posted: 06/21/10 10:48 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:50 PM ET

Motorola Droid Vs Droid

Motorola and Verizon are likely to unveil the still-unofficial new Motorola Droid 2 on June 23, but Android and Me seems to have gotten its hands on the new smartphone already and has a five minute video (allegedly) of the Droid 2 to prove it.

The clip compares the previous Droid to the Droid 2, with the two handsets' outside forms "virtually identical" save for changes to the navigation pad and buttons.

"If you saw someone using this phone and didn't know it was the Droid 2, it would be easy to confuse it with the first version. Both phones are the same physical size, shape, and weight. They even use the same exact battery," writes Android and Me. "Performance is the main area of improvement over the original."

The Droid 2--with a 1 GHz processor-- is faster than the original Motorola Droid, equipped with a 550 MHz processor. It also has about twice the memory of the first-generation Droid.

The Motorola Droid X is expected to be announced together with the Droid 2 later this week. See pictures, video, and details of the Droid X here.

Too late, just bought an HTC Incredible. I have to wait until July 11 for it though.

I like that it has a keyboard and that's it. But I don't like the keyboard.

It's not to late. You can call Verizon and ask to change phones. You would just need to send the HTC back when it arrives and pay a restocking fee.

Interesting. The final issue for me is customization of key-assignment on the keyboard, and customization of the operating system. Looks good.

It's startling to watch how technology tends to run in cycles and turns back on itself times after time... So you like the form factor of this new toy?? Like what it can do from the hidden keyboard??

This is REAL old stuff... Nokia had an almost identical platform available 25 years ago called the "Communicator"... Snore...snore...snore.....

My first PC was 233MHz, and 128MB RAM. Technology = magic.

Why you little whipper snapper, my first was an 8088 4.2Mhz with 64KB of ram, green screen and no hard disk let alone a cdrom and, it was brand new and it still cost $1350.00 with a dot matrix printer, ahh the 80s dawn of the PC.

Who are you calling a whipper snapper you little...whipper snapper?
Why, I remember standing in a crowd looking through a glass case at the Sears store. We were looking at the first hand held calculator that could only add, subtract, multiply and divide. It cost a week's wages and you had to ask the clerk to unlock the case to hold it and that's about all you could do because it just seemed so darn complicated!

So what do you all think, should I get a Droid or a Blackberry? Really, I'm shopping to replace my 6 year old cell phone - only because I need email.

All of youse, younger than this morning's dew. I remember when we could only count to 7. That's the total number of rocks we had.

They're coming out with a new one?!! I just got my Droid (1) less than a week ago!! Nevertheless, I love it. It's my first "smartphone", but I totally love it. I can do so much w/ it and I'm still learning new things I can do w/ the device!!

I wouldn't go with Verizon if I was on fire and the Droid 2 came with an extinguisher. They ripped me off so much money I could chew glass.

I hope this goes down in flames.

same here! I despise ATT and my iPhone experience, but Verizon was much, much worse and I didn't even have a "smart" phone with them.

Just sent mine back, and going back to blackberry.. major power drain, basically if you want to run it with anything other than a simple phone service you need a $50 extra battery. What they neglect to tell you is that if you watch video's your battery will last about 2 hours. Not for business use in my opinion.
07:32 PM on 06/21/2010
Not for business use? Are you in the movie business? How many videos are you watching during work hours?

I have no problems with the battery. I'd recommend to everyone with a Droid to use the Power Control Widget. Makes it really easy to turn on/off Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, calls, and adjust the screen brightness. Using those features only when you need them really helps with power maintenance.

Care to explain how you sent it back when it isn't even released until Wednesday? Do you work for RIM?
02:05 PM on 06/21/2010
The main issue with my droid is the crappy keyboard, which they seemed to address. Otherwise it's a pretty good phone. I don't see it worth spending a dime to upgrade to a Droid 2.0, since my life does not revolve around my freakin cell phone.
I guess if you don't like this guy's video you could also choose to know nothing. He probably got his hands on something that might cause a person to get fired, and was in a hurry to appease the world of tech dorks. Next time maybe he should hire Brian Singer to direct.

Form follows function.

Having seen the Droid in use all this past weekend, it's not a device to put on a shelf and look at (iphone), it's actually meant to be used.

For starters -- downloading the Rhapsody app and being able to store DRM'd music on it like an mp3, or to stream live in your car. It's a pocket media machine.

Try the "mixzing" app. It's free and awesome. I prefer it to itunes.

You can also set up your home Linux server with Ampache then use Amdroid to stream directly from your private collection. If you prefer a copy over streaming, just setup sshd on your home Linux server and use AndFTP to download. BTW, DRM'd music is lame.
09:07 PM on 06/21/2010
Interesting. I can stream media I download to my MacPro and stream it in almost any format to my 65" TV using an app called AirVideo on my iPhone 3GS. All I had to do to set it up was enter a pin#. Oh, and plug in the composite cables.
