Mermaid Parade Hits Coney Island, Gets Political (PHOTOS)

Men in drag and scantily-clad women strolled down Brooklyn's Surf Avenue this past Sunday in Coney Island's annual Mermaid Parade.

Lou Reed and wife Laurie Anderson presided over the beach-front fete as the crowned King and Queen, while members of the Mermaid constituency marched in rage over the oil spill. Their signs bluntly expressed their anger, reading "Fuck You BP, Save The Mermaids," Gothamist reported.

When not protesting BP, the mermaids kept the mood chipper with their bright costumes and body glitter. Check out their outlandish get-ups below!

Michael Immerso: Coney Island Cornerstones on Surf Avenue Face Demolition

By allowing Surf Avenue's historic buildings to be razed, the city risks treating Coney Island as a brand name rather than a place. That's like Texas tearing down the Alamo to build an Alamo theme park.

why is it that in parades the women dress up so glitzy, then the gays come dressed like a bad rendition of a freddy mercury wet dream and make it awkward. why can't they be glitzy too?
