Nancy Pelosi Slams Senate Dithering On Jobs

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) slammed Republicans on Friday for the Senate's failure to pass an urgent jobs bill.

"The House has repeatedly sent jobs-creating bills to the Senate since December -- Build America Bonds, small business hiring incentives, and importantly, summer jobs -- and yet Republicans continue to block approval of jobs legislation," said Pelosi in a statement. "What is it that Republicans in the Senate and House don't understand about the need for jobs in America?"

At the end of May, the House approved a bill to provide tax breaks for individuals and businesses and to reauthorize several domestic aid programs, including extended unemployment benefits and the so-called "Doc Fix," which protects doctors who see Medicare patients from a 21 percent pay cut. The Senate has been unable to pass the bill because of deficit concerns, and extended unemployment benefits and Doc Fix have both expired, affecting hundreds of thousands of people across the country.

On Friday, Senate leaders congratulated each other profusely after agreeing to spending offsets to preserve Doc Fix for six months without adding to the deficit, but it was too late: Moments later, Medicare announced that after holding off for weeks, it would begin processing June claims at the reduced rate.

The American Medical Association, a physicians' lobbying group, says that some doctors are already shunning Medicare patients because of uncertainties about compensation, and the AARP says its members have reported trouble finding doctors specifically because of the current lapse in Doc Fix.

Despite the Senate's action, which would retroactively make doctors whole for Medicare work, there's still no relief in sight: Pelosi said she saw "no reason" for the House to pass the Senate's six month Doc Fix until the chamber got its act together on the rest of the package. (The version the House passed, after much deficit wrangling, included a 19-month Doc Fix.)

"The bill Senate Republicans allowed to pass is not only inadequate with respect to physician fees, but it ignores urgent sections of the House bill to provide jobs," Pelosi said. "I see no reason to pass this inadequate bill until we see jobs legislation coming out of the Senate."

It's not just Republicans, but conservative Democrats in both chambers who are standing in the way of the jobs legislation. After monthly jobs reports have shown modest gains, conservative Democrats have lost their appetites for fighting the jobs crisis if doing so adds to the deficit, and party leaders apparently have no choice but to try to appease them.

In the Senate, Democrats are looking to cut $25 per week from every unemployment check. The House cut just under $8 billion in subsidies for laid-off workers to buy health insurance and $24 billion in aid to state Medicaid programs from the package, a crucial chunk of money that Senate leaders and President Obama have insisted should be reinserted to prevent a wave of public sector layoffs.

"Unfortunately, the Republican leadership in the Senate won't even allow this legislation to come up for a vote," said Obama on Saturday. "And if this obstruction continues, unemployed Americans will see their benefits stop. Teachers and firefighters will lose their jobs. Families will pay more for their first home."

Since June 1, federally-funded extended unemployment benefits for people who've been out of work for longer than six months have been phasing out. So far, 903,000 people have prematurely lost access to the extra weeks of benefits, which were originally provided by the stimulus bill. By Friday, that number will climb to 1.2 million.

I think that from now on, we should refer to her by her full name, Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro Pelosi. It will add to her mystique.

I think it's time that Pelosi runs for Senate and replaces Reid as its Majority Leader. That august body will never know what hit it.

I have tried posting this several times - and someone continues to delete it. I have notified HP - and am reposting it!

Between the jobs bill being blocked, and now Hatch wanting the Unemployed to be 'drug-tested', I am wondering if we don't need one more bill...

Well...let's see....Hatch, McConnell, Barton, DeMint, Paul, Angle, Palin, Bachmann...and so on.

If it isn't in place already, I suggest that there be a law passed for random drug testing for Senators, Congress people, and all candidates for those offices.

Based upon the behavior of many of them lately, it is indeed warranted!

Blah, blah, blah....always the same crap....the cheerleading and the digs. Dems against Repubs and vice versa.

Bottom line, we are all Americans, keep beating each other up....that'll solve all the problems, you dumbasses!! Maybe when we are all living in the republic of MexiChinausedtobeAmerica....you will all feel better.

The sad part, as long as our country is inhabited by small minded losers, nothing will change, the politicians, both left and right, will continue to play you like the stupid puppets you are.

Yup. Same assclowns...different makeup.

We can't heal a deep wound if you first don't stitch it up and stop the bleeding. The Band-aid effect of small legislation here and there every few months just isn't going to cut it and quite frankly its alarming to see the lack of initiative from ALL decision making parties. Both House and Senate. The time for change and new legislation is upon us NOW !! Let's face it, the statistical % being displayed by the DOL are not even close to the actual % of Unemployed Americans. It is more like 2x that and steadily on the rise. Don't force a revolt on the people that elected you to serve THEIR interests.. I know, I know.. I said it, but in reality we are mammals. Just the same as any animal, when we're backed into a corner with no escape route in sight, we come out fighting!
05:25 PM on 06/22/2010
Band aid's dont' work. Our elected officials are to SCARED to committ....they all suck!!!! They are all useless....what we need is a new law that gives the American People the right to stab these moron's in the eye when they fail to do the job they were ELECTED to do. My friggin puppy would be more effective.

Obama has done nothing, nothing.....not on jobs, not on the economy and not on the oil spill.

I live on the Gulf coast, so this matters Hugely to me....but I also have enough brain power left over to think about other things.

and to make things clear, I am not anti Democrat, nor am I anti Republican.....just Pro America

Sadly, the biggest road-block in Washington right now is the simple fact that elections are right around the corner.
05:01 PM on 06/22/2010
Sadly, alot of folks aren't seeing the bigger picture. I can certainly understand and sympathize for those most directly affected by the Gulf oil debacle, but it will eventually directly affect all consumers nationally/Internationally due to rise in cost that will ultimately fall on the consumer. But media needs to get a grip!! This economic issue scales far deeper than the well spewing oil below the ocean's surface. With so many focused on that it's hard to imagine why sh*t isn't progressing through our congress(Both Sides of the aisle). What America truly needs is a huge Benefits/Further Stimulus bill in which "fast-trac" jobs can be established immediately. A bill that would benefit and immediately impact Main St, not Wall St! Let's face it, some are still scratching their heads on the last bailout to those that mostly contributed to this dilemma, let alone how much our Fed gave out in TOTAL on top of this "TARP" bill in which they'll never divulge unless forced to through legislation. A bill that would also include a tier 5 for those that have been Unemployed the longest. Those 99r's have been waiting since March for a proper piece of legislation that also includes THEM. These people are your neighbors, friends, and relatives. More importantly, they're Americans. If another tier isnt added, this grave nation is going to see the biggest "SNOWBALL" effect of unemployment rate increase than this great nation has ever seen its its entire history.

meanwhile, the 21% medicare cut continues... As more and more physicians go broke and close up shop because of medicare cuts, seniors lose access to health care - what happened to health care reform? That was so important 6 months ago, now its being undermined by Pelosi's stall tactics. It's not the Senate that's dithering, its Pelosi.

And BTW, its hardly a "doc fix" at all. It's just kicking the can down the road, the cuts would come back into effect 6 months from now. The whole Medicare cut rule that was passed over a decade ago needs to be completely thrown out the window.
04:43 PM on 06/22/2010
Costs need to be contained somehow.

That said, Medicare reimbursements to the docs is actually not that low, this is a completely false argument.

Mosts insurance companies have actually comparable negotiated rates, very close to what Medicare pays. I challenge you to compare what United Healthcare negotiated rates with Medicare Negotiated rate, they are comparable. This bru ha ha on Medicate cuts is just a political stunt by lobbyists.

Your concerns of docs going broke is hilarious, have you ever cared to know how much they make, and how they live. One of the most prosperous profession in the US.

From conversations I've had with family and friends lately, it appears that what bothers most people about Nancy Pelosi and company is that they're trying to control all aspects of our lives because they do not think we have the capacity to do it ourselves. I believe that if they would stop meddling in areas where they have no expertise and stick to their legitimate duties, according to the Constitution, we'd all be a lot happier with the laws they're dreaming up lately. Remember, this current majority came into power in 2007. They've had three and a half years to do just about whatever they wanted to do.

Control, big govt, freedom, old values, want my country back ...

Do you have anything concrete to say....or just Tea republicans talking points.

LOL!!!

Moreover, your comments about dems in power in 2007.

Congress does not run govt, etc. Bush and Chaney were still in charge until Feb. 2009.

What is that DEMs or nancy did you hate most:

is it

- Party of NO is blocking over 80% legislations, and are desparate to see Dems FAIL.

or

- Dems have passed some good legislations despite tooth and Nail oppoistion, such as HIR, finanacial reforms, etc..

or

- Country is more stable after sept 2008 disaster, left by Bush/Chaney, otherwise it sure looked like heading into 1930's like depression.

or

- You would like to see failed policies for Bush/Chaney back, favoring tax cut for ultra rich, big business, bit OIL and NOT even a dime increase in min wage.

or

- You would like to see wall street HC cons continue to screw us, by denying, limiting, branding issues pre-existing conditions, rasing costs year after year...

Which one, I am so curious....”

My favorite one is...."we must pass it, so we know what's in it."

It simply speaks volumes of her lack of grey matter.

The problem is that WE Democrats did not do our job in getting rid of these Fake Democrats. When we complain about our Democratic leaders Not Having any Backbone, what we really mean is that We Democrats do not have any Backbone because we are not showing the way. Part of the problem is that we expected Obama to be a strong leader and he turned out to be a Whimp and a compromiser. It is still our fault! We need to organize and put the pedal to the Metal. If I had the Money, I would start a Website and lead the way with organizing efforts and a solid Campaign to rid ourselves of these impediments. God, help me win the Lotto!!
12:54 PM on 06/22/2010
Assume you win the lotto. What, precisely, would you do on this website?

So the Dems thought after the dirty tricks that were used to pass health care that the houses would sit around and sing kumbaya...The funny thing is this outrage from Pelosi isn't about the GOP not getting on board cause they weren't on board for the FIRST JOBS BILL...She's mad that even with 9.7% unemployment there is no backlash towards the GOP for holding up these spending bills...
11:44 AM on 06/22/2010
why do people find comfort in groups? large numbers of my species scare the hell out of me.
if a patently disingenuous, self-dealing fraud happens to identify as a member of your favored political faction is this person yet a disingenuous, self-dealing fraud? a hidebound devotion is what emerson had in mind when he referred to a foolish consistency.
nancy pelosi has more in common with mitch mcconnell than the working poor. decry me as a member of the neocon republicans but i am loathsome enough as a member of the human race. when i referred to nancy as a taxidermied, hairsprayed zombie i was merely noting that she is very life-like if largely inflexible, and, yes, perhaps undead.
science has proffered less plausible explanations than hairdo poisoning. early nineties, madonna, remember? when nancy pelosi and her ilk (politicians) worry about my feelings i'll be more inclined to return the favor. grow up.
